Weight ManagementA key focus of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is addressing the obe-sity epidemic in this country. Research shows that excess weight increases the risk of heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. Today approximately 72 percent of men and 64 percent of women in America are over-weight or obese.1 If these trends continue, it has been predicted that by 2030, more than 80 percent of American adults will be overweight or obese.2 At Campbell Soup Company, we know there is no “magic bullet” for weight loss. But we also know that a wealth of research supports simple but effective weight management strategies like eating more low-energy-dense, high-volume foods such as soup and vegetables, which can be high in water and fiber content. Feeling fuller on fewer calories is the concept behind the energy density ap-proach. Exercising calorie control and increasing fiber intake by consuming more whole grains are also important for weight management. Our product portfolio features a variety of foods that can easily fit into any weight management plan. This includes more than 200 products that are 100 calories or less per serving; 140 Campbell’s® soups, Prego® sauces and V8® beverages that provide at least one full serving of vegetables (1/2 cup) per serv-ing; and nearly 40 Pepperidge Farm® breads that are a “good” or “excellent” source of fiber or provide at least half a serving of whole grain in one slice. Weight Management: SoupThe 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that there is some evidence that “soup, par ticularly broth or water-based soups, may lead to decreased calorie intake and body weight over time.”1 At Campbell Soup Company, we couldn’t agree more with the important role soup can play in helping with weight management. Research suggests that when people eat a low-energy-dense, high-volume food like soup before a meal, they are more likely to eat less at that meal overall.2 At the same calorie levels, low-energy-dense foods provide a greater volume of food compared to high-energy-dense foods. This translates to feeling full on fewer calories. For those seeking satiety and calorie reduction at the same time, we offer more than 60 soups with 80 calories or less per serving. Our consumer insights indicate that satiety is one of the most challenging hur-dles of weight management, and that 60 percent of people surveyed think soup is an effective weight management tool.3 The research also revealed nearly 90 percent of people would eat soup more often if they thought it could help them manage their weight. To learn more about the science supporting soup as a weight management tool and the overall benefits of incorporating low-energy-dense, high-volume foods into a balanced diet, you can link to the comprehensive summary of peer-reviewed science we updated in December 2010, titled “Soup as a Weight Management Strategy.” Sources: 1. Weight Management: VegetablesVegetable consumption is also helpful for those trying to manage their weight. Yet, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report, approximately 75 – 95 percent of Americans, depending on age and gender, fail to meet their recommended number of servings per day.1

At Campbell Soup Company, we collaborate with some of the nation’s leading academic institutions to conduct scientific research on the role of our products in a healthy diet. In a study from Baylor College of Medicine, overweight individuals with metabolic syndrome who drank one to two servings of V8® Low Sodium 100% vegetable juice as part of a balanced, calorie-controlled Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet lost more weight compared to non-juice drinkers. Over the 12-week study period, the juice drinkers lost an average of four pounds compared to the non-juice drinkers who lost one pound.2

We offer 155 products that deliver at least one full serving of vegetables (1/2 cup) in each serving. In addition, six V8 V-Fusion® Light juices and three V8 V-Fusion® +Tea beverages provide a combined serving of vegetables and fruit in each 8-ounce glass. Weight Management: Calorie ControlGiven the obesity epidemic, it is not surprising that calorie control is being emphasized in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The report encourages Americans to “prepare, serve and consume smaller portions of foods and beverages, especially those high in calories,” because “serving and consuming smaller portions is associated with weight loss and weight management over time.”1 Campbell Soup Company knows that it can be challenging for people to be aware of what and how much they eat. To help people actively manage their weight, we offer more than 200 products that are 100 calories or less per serving. We also provide a variety of portion-controlled products that offer great taste and satisfaction including Campbell’s® Soup at Hand® soups, Pepperidge Farm® 100% Whole Wheat, Deli Flats® Thin Rolls and V8® 100% vegetable juice 5.5-ounce cans. Weight Management: Whole GrainsA wide body of research suggests consumption of whole grains and fiber as part of a healthy diet may help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, as well as help people to manage their weight. And, as stated in the 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, “because fiber has known health benefits, it is advisable to select foods high in dietary fiber, whole grains breads and cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruit whenever possible.” Yet, according to the scientific report of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, only five percent of Americans meet their minimum recommended servings of whole grains per day. Campbell consumer insights have shown that 23 percent of people are actively managing the amount of fiber in their diet. We offer more than 40 Pepperidge Farm breads that meet government standards for “good” or “excellent” sources of fiber or provide 100 percent of the recommended whole grains each day, and nearly one third of the recommended fiber. Plus, nearly two dozen of our Pepperidge Farm breads are certified by the American Heart Association and display the organization’s heart-check mark on the package. For further information on the goodness of grains in Pepperidge Farm products, please click here. Additionally, we offer a variety of soups that provide whole grains.

Increase VegetablesResearch shows eating vegetables as part of a healthy diet may promote good health – including helping to reduce risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. Vegetable consumption is also helpful for those trying to manage their weight. Yet, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report, approximately 75 – 95 percent of Americans (depending on age and gender) fail to meet their recommended number of servings per day.1

At Campbell Soup Company, we understand the barriers that must be overcome to increase vegetable consumption. Consumers most commonly report fear of spoilage (51 percent), price (50 percent), availability (49 percent), convenience (42 percent) and time (33 percent) as the biggest obstacles.2 And, in further investigating those barriers, we found that among 1,000 women polled, 60 percent would likely eat more vegetables daily if they tasted better and nearly 50 percent would consume more vegetables if they tasted more like fruit. To address these barriers, we offer 155 products that deliver at least one full serving of vegetables (1/2 cup) in each serving. In addition, six V8 V-Fusion® Light juices and three V8 V-Fusion® +Tea beverages provide a combined serving of vegetables and fruit in each 8-ounce glass. And, because we know scientific research is also important in addressing these barriers, we’ve collaborated with some of the nation’s leading academic institutions to conduct scientific research on the role of our products in a healthy diet. We have supported research studies that help determine if vegetable juice is a practical way to increase vegetable intake; explored whether eating more vegetable-rich foods like juice and soup can help with weight management; and evaluated the affordability of vegetables. Increase Whole Grains Research suggests consumption of whole grains and fiber may help reduce risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, as well as help people to manage their weight. And, as stated in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report, “because fiber has known health benefits, it is advisable to select foods high in dietary fiber, whole grain breads and cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruit whenever possible.”1 Yet, only five percent of Americans meet their minimum recommended servings of whole grains per day.2

Campbell Soup Company’s consumer insights have shown that whole grains are one of the leading items people want to include or increase in the foods they eat, and 72 percent of those surveyed believe bread grains are a nutritious staple in a healthy and balanced diet. We’ve also found that 23 percent of people surveyed are actively managing the amount of fiber in their diet.3

As part of our mission to nourish people’s lives everywhere, every day, we offer a wide range of choices across our Pepperidge Farm® bread portfolio. This includes nearly 40 Pepperidge Farm breads that meet government standards for “good” or “excellent” sources of fiber or provide at least a half serving of whole grain in one slice. Two slices of Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain breads provide 100 percent of the daily recommendation for whole grains and nearly one third of daily fiber requirements. Plus, 19 Pepperidge Farm breads are certified by the American Heart Association, meeting the criteria necessary to display the organization’s heart-check mark on the package. For further information on the goodness of grains in Pepperidge Farm products, please click here. Additionally, we offer 15 soups that provide whole grains including Campbell’s® condensed Healthy Kids soups and Campbell’s Select Harvest® soups.

Reduce Sodium Consuming excess sodium, especially when accompanied by inadequate potassium intake, can lead to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for stroke, coronary heart disease, and kidney disease. At Campbell Soup Company, we know how important it is to help people eat healthier diets, and have been lowering sodium across our portfolio for decades. As an industry leader, we offer a wide variety of great-tasting, lower-sodium products that suit people’s lifestyle needs and help them meet their dietary goals. This includes 90 varieties of Campbell’s® soups and more than 100 other Campbell products, such as V8® beverages, Prego® Italian sauces, SpaghettiOs® pastas and most Pepperidge Farm® breads In addition, we offer more than 80 products that are certified by the American Heart Association (AHA), meeting the required sodium level, and other key criteria, to display the organization’s heart-check mark on the package.

We recently introduced eight new varieties of Campbell’s Healthy Request® soups, increasing the line from 25 to 33 varieties. Our Healthy Request soups offer heart-healthy versions of some of our most popular Condensed, Select Harvest®, and Chunky® soups. All of our Healthy Request soups contain 410 mg of sodium per serving, meet U.S. government criteria for healthy foods and qualify to display the AHA heart-check mark on the package. In addition, we will continue to provide more than 50 other soups in our Condensed, Chunky, Select Harvest and V8 product lines whose sodium content has been reduced between 10 and 50 percent in the last few years.
