Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard of the Campbell River RCMP has con-firmed that they are assisting the B.C. Coroner’s service in the investi-gation of human remains recovered from the Oyster River just south of Campbell River earlier this month.
A York Road resident, who has requested anonymity, tells the Mirror that on Aug. 4 snorkelers swimming in the river discovered a body.
Search and Rescue and police attended and retrieved the remains from the river.
The coroner’s service did not com-ment on the matter in time for pub-lication.
Watch the Mirror and campbellriv-ermirror.com for more information as it becomes known.

Chances staff vote to strike
The employees at Chances Casino in Campbell River have, “sent a strong message to the employer,” Playtime Gaming, by voting 96 per cent in favour of strike action, according to a press release from The United Steelworkers Local 1-1937, the union representing the workers.
The negotiations between the union and Playtime have broken down in their latest round of contract bargaining.
The union says they’ve received no response to their last counter proposal, and “will not bargain with ourselves,” saying that, “it is their turn to show the movement they said would be there prior to our last adjustment.”
“Hopefully the company will get the message that their employees are determined to get a fair collective
agreement This just confirms what we have been telling the Employer and that is that the membership is adamant on getting an agreement that reflects the revenues and profits that are being taken out of this business by both the company and the government,” said Rick Wangler in the union’s release.
From the employer’s perspective, the union’s last proposal was unrealistic. In a release from Playtime Gaming before the strike vote was held, which they confirmed, “remains unchanged,” they expressed their disappointment that the union “was intent on seeking a strike vote from our employees in order to advance its position at the bargaining table,” rather than, “providing us with a more realistic proposal upon which the bargaining process could continue.”
Both sides are adamant that they are more than willing to continue the bargaining process.
New SPCA facility on track to open next month
Mike DaviesCAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The electricians and contractors are at work, the volunteer base is strong, and the SPCA is in the final push to reopen their doors at their new facility at 891 13th avenue in a space belonging to the Asso-ciation Francophone de Campbell River (AFCR).
The SPCA has not had a home in Campbell River since early in 2013, when the City awarded the animal control con-tract for Campbell River to Coastal Animal Con-trol, a private company based down Island - a contract previously held by the SPCA and with-out which they could not remain financially sus-tainable.
But they’re close to being back, albeit in a more limited capacity.
“The community has been so supportive and so understanding through the process, which is awesome,” said Stepha-nie Arkwright, manager of the Campbell River
branch of the BC SPCA. “As long as everything stays on track, we’re hop-ing to open after Paws for a Cause,” which is the BC SPCA’s major annual fundraiser. This year’s Paws for a Cause event happens Sunday, Sept. 9 in Nunn’s Creek Park.
Jeanne Landry, execu-tive director of the AFCR, said when she read about them looking for space to come back she called them immedi-ately to offer up the area they will eventually call home.
“We got it rezoned, and then there were build-ing permits and every-thing…it took a long time,” Landry said, but added that now that the renovations are under-way, “it’s coming along faster than I thought I would.”
The new facility is expected to house an adoption and education centre, as well as pro-viding specialized emer-gency services such as boarding and temporary care for injured wildlife. It will also, according to
Arkwright, have a retail area for pet food and pet related products, as well as being a meeting place for their community vol-unteers and eventually be able to host educational events for the commu-nity, some of which will run in cooperation with the Francophone Asso-ciation.
Thanks to recent approval from the City, two of the SPCA’s old outbuildings from the property on Merecroft Road, out of which the branch operated for years, will also be relo-cated to the new facility. Arkwright expects that process to be completed by the end of August. Those buildings will add significant interior space to the operation.
The buildings being transferred are, “not your typical garden shed,” Arkwright said. They were built to house animals on the old prop-erty, and she expects they will likely be used for the same purpose in their new location.
In terms of the orga-
nization’s community services during the renovations, Arkwright said they’re happy to have at least been able to provide their spay and neuter programs during the turmoil. Since Oct. 22, 2013, the organiza-tion has spayed or neu-tered approximately 675 cats with help from a $158,000 grant through Pe t smar t C har i t i e s Canada to subsidize the cost to owners. For a $30 donation to the pro-gram (which goes back into the fund for when the grant expires to help them continue the ser-vice), any resident of Campbell River can have any owned, feral or com-munity cat spay or neu-tered. The program runs through October, 2015.
Call Arkwright at 250-830-4192 if you have any questions regarding any of their programs, the new facility, or would like to volunteer to help out, and look for more information about the facility’s opening in an upcoming edition of the Mirror.

Rivercorp has many irons in the fire as it works to contribute to the economic viability of Campbell River, city council was told.
In a presentation to Campbell River City Council Aug. 12, River-corp Board Chair Donna Hains outlined lots of behind the scenes work by the city’s economic development office as it tries to stoke the fires of economic vitality.
“The primary role of an economic development office is to inform poten-tial investors and the pri-vate sector about oppor-tunities in our commu-nity, facilitate meetings and interactions between appropriate parties and work to create an envi-ronment that is favour-able to investment,” Hains told council. “My report outlines numer-ous projects Rivercorp has been working on and demonstrates that we have been working hard for Campbell River and will continue to work hard to contribute to the economic vitality of our city and region.”
The projects reviewed for city council reflect Rivercorp’s strategic priorities: revitalizing the industrial tax base, retaining and growing the commercial tax base, and improving Camp-bell River and region as a tourism destination.
“Rivercorp has been working very closely with Quicksilver Resources
and other players in the LNG sector to position the Elk Falls site as a key player in the new LNG marketplace,” Hains said.
At stake are “hundreds of new, well-paying jobs in Campbell River and a significant positive bump to the city’s industrial tax base,” she added.
Rivercorp has been working to facilitate development of a new industrial park near the airport.
“This park would sat-isfy demand for new industrial land for green energy, clean technology, and aerospace sectors, among others, allowing for substantial invest-ment, the creation of sig-nificant numbers of new jobs and an increased tax base,” the board chair said.
The city’s economic development office is also looking into the viability of developing a seafood logistics hub in the area.
“Campbell River and the surrounding region is home to vibrant fin and shellfish industries as well as the traditional wild fishery,” Hain said. “Rivercorp is look-
ing into the viability of developing a seafood logistics hub.”
That would include a flexible cold storage facil-ity and would provide year-round jobs.
The seafood hub news caught Coun. Mary Sto-ry’s attention.
“I’m very excited about the seafood logistics hub,” Story said.
But Vic Goodman, Riv-ercorp CEO had to tem-per that enthusiasm a bit.
“We’re really at the ini-tial stage,” he said. “We haven’t moved very far along with this.”
Another idea in the works is working actively with the Vancouver Island aerospace sector on major initiatives to bring well-paying aero-space jobs to the region.
In the spring of 2013, Rivercorp was requested by the provincial govern-ment as well as a consor-tium of industry players and economic develop-ment offices on Vancou-ver Island to engage in discussions with Boeing to pursue Island aero-space opportunities. Those discussions are ongoing, Hain said.
Rivercorp is also work-
ing with the federal gov-ernment on fixed wing search and rescue aircraft contract which will have island wide impact.
Rivercorp’s mandate to grow the tax base includes the creation of a small business incubator at the Enterprise Centre.
“The region boasts a vibrant, growing clus-ter of digital animators, game developers and other creative industry professionals,” Hains said. “This incubator will provide valuable services to this new economic sector, as well as an invit-ing, well-equipped place for small business people to work and interact.
“Rivercorp is work-ing with the Campbell River Creative Industries Council and the city on this project,”
The chair also reported that “Rivercorp, through its Tourism Campbell River and Region and Visitor Centre depart-ments, has been work-ing very actively with regional tourism opera-tors.
“Our objective is to increase tourism num-bers and hotel stays and generate longer stays.

MUSIC
It’s t ime for the Museum at Campbell River’s Steam Donkey to roar with fire!
In celebrat ion of Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 1, from 12 noon to 3 p.m., the museum will fire up its steam donkey in honour of the island’s rich logging history.
Historically, on July 23, 1894, the Canadian Gov-ernment enacted legisla-tion making Labour Day the first Monday of Sep-tember of each year into a national holiday.
The annual celebration of a ‘workingman’s holi-day’ is celebrated every year at the museum.
Steam was a significant factor in the history of labour and the devel-opment of Vancouver
Island. It’s an amazing sight to see a Steam Don-key all steamed up.
A working steam don-key model will also be on hand to demonstrate the type of work they achieved.
As part of the festivi-ties, restored logging trucks will be on dis-play, including a 1932 920 Kenworth and the Museum’s own 1930 Hayes-Anderson.
And the Museum’s amazing Lego collection will be outdoors for the kids (and parents) to play with. Free coffee will be available.
Inside the Museum be sure to check out the exhibit Unexpected Treasures in the Chang-ing Gallery, as well as the
recently opened Water-shed exhibit and kiosk.
This is sure to be fun for the whole family.
Head to the Museum this Labour Day.
Bron Studios of Van-couver and Rhombus Media of Toronto are producing a motion picture entitled Into the Forest, based on the Jean Hegland novel of the same name, which will star Ellen Page (Juno, X-Men Days of Future Past) and Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler,
Thirteen), and they’ve settled on Elk Falls Pro-vincial Park as one of the locations for filming.
According to produc-tion company, Into the Forest Productions BC, the location was chosen “for the large old growth trees that are accessible, picturesque [that will] serve production well for
the film’s scenes.”Directed by Patri-
cia Rozema (Mansfield Park), the film centres on two teens growing up in the remote forests of Northern California while the world is on the brink of apocalypse.
BC Parks has permit-ted the production to film in the Day Use Area
in the upper parking lot and related public trails around the old growth trees. Filming dates will be on Aug. 24 and 25, though the general pub-lic will be welcomed throughout the area only during the cleanup and teardown stage of the shoot on the 25th. Dur-ing filming, the support
vehicles and services have been given the option of locating along the upper parking lot access road and park-ing area and will also be using a portion of the new parking area near the BC Hydro Interpre-tive Centre. The public will have vehicle access to the park via the new
BC Hydro / BC Parks parking area and the lower parking lot will remain open. Use of all surrounding walking trails will be allowed with occasional requests for control for short periods during actual filming.
For information about the production or about
filming in British Colum-bia, contact Vancouver Island North Film Com-missioner, Joan Miller at INfilm, the Community Affairs Liason, Gordon Harwick at Creative BC at 604-730-7232 or Into the Forest Location Man-ager, Hans Dayal at 604-628-3150.

It used to be that one didn’t venture alone down a suspiciously dark alley for fear of being mugged. Technology, of course, has long since brought robbers
to our doorsteps, via telephones and computers.
We can’t afford to relax our vigilance at home, with conscienceless scammers ever-ready to exploit age, infirmity, inattention or our own naturally trusting natures.
The young friend or relative-in-distress scenario is still alive and kicking, according to one recent call. The caller is, of course, in some predicament that requires the sending of money, and the
easiest way is by providing financial information that will compromise the victim’s accounts.
It’s a cold-hearted scheme, relying on seniors’ perceptions of the casual haphazardness of the young, and the fact that they may be delighted to hear from a usually uncommunicative relative.
Another reader recently made the mistake of responding to an offer to rid his computer of viruses and malware at a special price. It was a limited-time offer, he was told. Thus baited, he was offered a series of options that tested his willingness to co-operate and compromise computer passwords – with the result that malware was actually installed, shutting down his system. He didn’t lose money, per se – other than having to pay for costly
repair and file retrieval – but he still worries that his computer was mined for sensitive information.
Each of these schemes has a common lynch-pin – catching the recipient off-guard with a time-sensitive request, calling for a snap decision.
It would be a sad commentary on our times if we became so jaded that we mistrust every attempt to communicate with us. But we should never volunteer information on the spur of the moment.
Nothing is lost by a short time-out for careful consideration. A real friend or relative, or legitimate business, will respect a small delay.
If they don’t, it should provide the reddest of red flags.– Black Press
Scams: Exercising caution is always warrantedOur ViewOur View
It’s up to us to keep people from making us sick
We say: Take a time-out for careful consideration
From grocery stores to restaurants, roadside fruit stands to catered banquets, any business with a license to sell food to the public is periodically inspected to ensure they are following appropriate and adequate safety measures. You prob-ably knew that.
But did you know you have access to those reports?
I recently went through them. Yes, I looked at the recent history of the health inspections done on all 223 of the licensed food service establishments in Campbell River.
Food Hazard Ratings are given to every business after an inspection, reflecting the general level of satisfac-tion the inspector has with the opera-tion at the time of inspection. A rating of Low, according to the branch of VIHA
who issues the reports, means, “the food facility was in good compliance with the Food Regulation and the health inspec-tor believes there are no food safety issues that require attention.
A rating of Moderate, “indicates the food facility has some minor food safety issues that can be eliminated with imme-diate attention by the operator.”
A High rating, “indicates there are significant food safety issues and the restaurant may be ordered closed if the operator does not take immediate action to correct them.”
These general ratings are somewhat misleading, however. If you want to look up your favourite restaurant’s health reports (and you should—we’ll get to that later), you need to go into each inspection’s report and analyze a degree
or two further. For example, an establishment with
a moderate hazard rating may have received only non-critical violations such as, “Improper Construction/Main-tenance of Establishment,” which sounds bad at first until you read that they got that violation because the shelf with the cleaning supplies is too high and they need to use a step stool to get to them. An establishment who received a Mod-erate rating had a few such violations, however, and some of them are obvi-ously more troubling than others.
What I’m saying is that you have to read these things with a critical and con-textualized eye.
You should also not just be looking at the most recent report, and instead look for trends or repeated violations, which
may imply a systemic issue or behav-ioural tendencies on the part of the establishment. These are bad.
For example, if an establishment is repeatedly receiving violations that read, “Improper Cleaning, Sanitizing of Equipment and Utensils,” or, “Inad-equate Cooling & Refrigeration of Potentially Hazardous Food(s),” which are Critical Violations, there are issues significantly above and beyond needing to replace their cutting boards or a wait-ress leaving her purse on the counter too close to the handwashing sink.
The long and short of my argument is this: We have access to these reports, and we should use that fact to force food and beverage service facilities to step up their games and avoid hazardous situations
Wondering what’s happening with recreation in Campbell River? Don’t miss Rexpo 2014, a one-day, one-stop shop for leisure activities.
The Recreation, Sports & Cultural Exposition will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Sportsplex.
“Rexpo will offer a chance to talk with representatives from sports organizations, performing arts, cultural groups and community groups – and to see what they have to offer in live demonstrations,” says City of Campbell River recre-ation programmer Karen Chappell. “And, once you’ve got the information you need, you can register on the spot!”
The event is partnership between the City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District to support commu-nity sports and recreation and cultural organizations, and to encourage active living for people of all ages, stages and abilities.
If your group would like to participate, contact Karen Chappell at the Sportsplex (250-923-7911) or email [email protected].

that endanger the health of the community.
We do that by telling them with our spending (or lack of) that we won’t stand for them slacking off and putting us at risk.
Read the reports . Read them fully, in con-text, and consider the infractions that they are
exposing. Is it possible they were just having an off day? Maybe. You can read between the lines, though.
A broken ice machine on the day of the inspec-tion will be a violation, but I personally wouldn’t put it in the same cat-egory as, “Significant c lean l iness i ssues ,”
despite it falling under the same category in the report itself (non-criti-cal).
Still don’t care? Okay, what if I told you that there were 32 establish-ments that received Moderate or High Haz-ard Ratings on their most recent inspection reports?
That’s about 14 per cent of every food service business in town failing their inspection by vari-ous degrees.
I’ll leave you to your reading now.
You can find them at healthspace.ca/viha under the link aptly named, “Food Facility Inspections.”

Even though they are no longer in the prime of life, your parents are refusing to move into a retirement home. Their safety is im portant to you and you’re worried.Fortunately, many companies specialize in home care for seniors. They provide them with support, particularly when it comes to routine daily tasks, such as cleaning and shopping at the grocery store or pharmacy. All your parents have to do is make a list of everything they need to purchase and relay it to the appropriate person at the company. If you’re worried that your parents aren’t eating properly, chefs can even help them prepare their meals for the week.
Other companies offer home medical care. The most common services offered include blood samples and vaccinations, as well as taking blood pressure readings, hygiene care, and diabetes shots. When it comes to safety, your
parents can have a medical alarm system installed. This ensures that assistance will arrive quickly if they ever fall or are unable to reach the telephone to call you.If your parents’ driving is a concern, or if they no longer have a car, encourage the use of public transportation for outings. It is also possible to make use of specialized ride-sharing services offered by a non-profit or ganization, or call for a taxi. Defining your parents’ needs will allow you to care for them and help them to remain independent. Above all, regular visits to your parents’ home are essential, and you can be sure that they’ll always be appreciated.

If Ann Kask had run all of her marathon races in
a row she would be in Calgary by now.
If her training runs were included, she would be well on her way back from New-foundland. Instead she has run throughout the world.
Now, after running 12 42.2 k marathons with Team Diabetes, she is trading in running shoes for hiking boots to hike the Inca Trail with Team Diabetes. She will tackle
the tortuous South American mountain path on August 24.
Team Diabetes is a national fundraising program for the Cana-dian Diabetes Asso-ciation. Since the team’s beginning in 2000, members of Team Dia-betes have raised over 30 million dollars for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Kask has been a Team Diabetes member since 2002 and has raised close to $70,000 during that time.
Over nine million Canadians are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
“I became involved because a close family member has had Type 1 diabetes for 53 years,” said Kask. “I saw Team Diabetes as a way that I could help in the effort to find a cure, and make a difference.”
While the Canadian Diabetes Association searches for a cure, it tries to ensure that all Canadians living with diabetes have access to
the information and resources they need to live healthy lives.
The results are evident locally. The CDA helps a camp for children with Type 1 diabetes at Camp Homewood on Quadra Island every year. Here young people living with Type 1 diabetes can learn how to manage their disease and gain independence through outdoor activities while a team of health profes-sionals provide around the clock diabetes edu-cation and management.
In addition to chil-dren and youth, the CDA provides diabetes management informa-tion and programs to local adults to mitigate the long term complica-tions of living with this chronic disease.

Most children enjoy nothing more than net-ting and studying flying backyard insects.
Dragonfly populations peak in mid-August, and make an ideal study subject with their robust bodies and strong wings. These lovely bugs sport jewel-like faces, while tinted wings with dark veins impart a stained-glass appearance.
On a calm day, the soft crackle of cellophane is the magical melody of dragonfly wings … the sound of opening a plas-tic cereal bag or crum-pling tissue paper.
The insect order Odonata (Greek for “toothed jaws”) contains dragonflies and damsel-
flies. They’re fancifully named: dashers and dancers and darners and skimmers; emeralds and bluets and gliders and cruisers. And, if you’ll recall, they’re the most ancient insect of all.
Some 250 million years ago, Canada Goose-sized dragonflies – Protodonata – ruled the skies, predating dinosaurs by more than 100 million years and birds by 150 million.
A good bug, the dragonfly consumes many times its weight in mosquitoes and other nuisance insects each day.
To safely handle a dragonfly, capture it in a net, then grasp all four wings with your thumb
and forefinger. Slowly remove from net, being careful to prevent inju-ries. These flying drag-ons can nibble, so keep fingers away from their mouths; contrary to popular belief, the drag-onfly’s long abdomen is
not a stinger.Cellophane sounds
and rainbow colours make this ancient and beautiful insect a joy to study. Always release the
creature soon after cap-ture, as they live for only a month or two.

CONGRATULATIONS to this years nominees!
The newly released Island Coastal Economic Trust annual report for 2013-2014 highlights the year’s results as well as the local impacts of the funding which has been disbursed to economic development projects in the region.
In 2006, the Province of BC invested $50 million into an economic devel-opment model governed by local leaders, enabling local decision making for economic investment.
To date, this fund has disbursed $44.3 million to projects on the Island north of the Malahat and on the Sunshine Coast.
These funds have gen-erated more than $268 million in additional investment to the region; this means an additional $4.7 dollars of economic development investment for every original dollar invested by the province. It also means more than 2500 construction jobs and 2,200 long term jobs, benefitting residents, businesses and even gov-ernments with increased taxation revenue.
But the greatest benefit is the long term change which happens in com-munities due to new amenities, improved transportation, business growth and new resident and business attraction.
“The theme of this year’s report is ‘Regional thinking, local results’, and that’s an apt meta-
phor for how ICET has operated since its incep-tion in 2006,” said Board Chair Phil Kent. “When you look at the spin-offs from projects like the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet which is now rated by TripAdvisor as the #1 attraction in all of B.C., it becomes obvious that investments in eco-nomic infrastructure are catalysts for growth and change.”
The annual report, available at www.island-coastaltrust.ca, a lso profiles the Trust’s new-est endeavour: the Eco-nomic Development Readiness Program. With more than $4M remaining to allocate to new projects, applicants are encouraged to visit the new www.island-coastaltrust.ca site to learn more and apply.
Applications for Eco-nomic Infrastructure Funding are due by Sept. 19 for the North Island and Sunshine Coast region.

Fun runThe Miracle Beach 5 & 10 K Run will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year on Oct. 19. The run was started in 1990 by the Campbell River Running Club and is one of the friendli-est and most relaxed events on the Island running calendar, as these four runners can attest. River Runners in conjunc-tion with the Camp-bell River Recreation Department are offer-ing another beginner run clinic for those who would like to train for the 5 or 10K distances at Miracle Beach. The clinic starts on Saturday, Sept. 13. Each week there are group runs for different speeds and distances. Some weeks will have infor-mative talks on run equipment and plan-ning and everyone will receive a five week training program. Cost is $25. To reg-ister for the run clinic call 250-923-7911.
The 2014/15 edition of the Campbell River Storm makes its debut this weekend with a VIJHL pre-season tilt Sunday afternoon in Victoria against the Cou-gars. Local hockey fans will recall that it was the Cougars that ended the Storm’s playoff hopes last spring, winning a tense, spirited semi-final series in five games.
Although it’s only an exhibition affair, Camp-bell River head coach Lee Stone is holding nothing back said he expects the two teams to pick up right where they left off in March.
“The team we are tak-ing to Victoria is very close to the team our fans will see on opening night,” he said. “At the end of the coming sea-son Victoria is probably the team we are going to have to beat [to win the Island]. At the start of the year you want to have a real good game, even though it’s only exhibi-tion – I think it sets the tone for the entire sea-son.”
There also may be a measure of revenge involved according to
associate coach Stefan Jensen.
“You have to take into consideration the last game our returning guys played was against Vic-toria in the playoffs, he said. “They knocked us out and there are still a lot of hard feelings about that.”
Both Stone and Jensen have high expectations for the coming season, especially after witness-ing the exceptional skill level exhibited last week-end at Strathcona Gar-dens during main camp.
“I was really impressed with the effort level from everybody,” said Stone, who is entering his sec-ond season at the helm. “It was a very talented camp, probably the most talented camp on the Island.”
Stone expects to have a veteran roster, with as many as ten returning players, and notes some have already made their presence felt.
“Josiah Friesen had an excellent camp,” he said, noting that he believes assigning him one of the team’s assistant captains at the end of last season boosted his confidence.
Another player picked out by the coaching staff to be one to watch this season is Michael Olson, who they say they have high expectations for after his stand out per-formance in training camp.
Among the surprises at camp were young for-wards Jaden McNulty and Ben Raffler, who led the scrimmages in points and plus-minus respec-tively, and 16-year-old Campbell River product Sage Lim who scored three times in three games.
The Storm roster will feature the largest crop of local products in recent memory, led by team captain Jordan Rauser and his tenacious younger brother Gavin.
Other former Tyees cracking the line-up include forwards James S e ve rs and Gr a dy McInnes along with defensemen Brendan Enns, Joe Gage, and Andy Stevens. Add Comox Valley’s Joe Surgenor to the mix and the Central Island is well represented.
“Any time you have local talent, it’s great,”
Stone said, “But the key word there is talent. You don’t just want locals, you want young men that have the ability to play.
That’s the exciting thing, any team on Vancouver Island would love to have any of these players.”
Campbell River fans
get their first look at the new squad next week-end.
The Storm will host The North Vancouver
Wolfpack in a pair of exhibition games set for Saturday and Sunday nights, Aug. 30 and 31, at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Fishing Corner with Don Daniels
As we head into the last two weeks of August, the buzz around Campbell River is that salmon shing has been the best ever in years.
Anglers getting out are getting their limits and are enjoying the nice weather. Lodge owners are having a great year and guides operating locally should be kept busy until mid October.
Springs are being caught and being added to the mix are coho and sockeye. The pinks are getting dark but offer the angler great fun on light tackle. Flycasters can be seen on the Campbell River and they can put on a show of casting nesse in hopes of getting a salmon on the line using a wide variety of store-bought or hand-tied ies or hand.
Early in the morning at Discovery Pier a handful of
anglers will enjoy shing, having a coffee and
simply spending time doing what they
enjoy best. A t
the Pier, Jack Heemskirk caught three springs in April and he was the rst to hit the scoreboard. Jack said it was slow this time of year but he is putting in his time shing and caught another spring that came in at 26.5 pounds on Aug. 15.
Mel Adams got a 22 pounder on Aug. 14 and Alex Lee got his 15 pounder July 14. Steve Mezzaros got a 9.5 pounder Aug. 14.
Bottom sh can often be caught off the pier and a Ling cod was caught last Monday.
At the Campbell River Tyee club as of Wednesday, Aug. 20, the bell was rung ve times. The latest catch reports include Dale Kashuba with a 38.5 pound Tyee
caught at 7 a.m. on Aug. 16 with his rower Randy
Killoran. On Aug. 17 at 8:45 a.m., Deb Idiens got a 30 pound Tyee with rower Bill Idiens.
Fishing guides are getting their limits of springs, sockeye and coho for their clients. To nd Sockeye, guides are shing north of the lodge.
Fishing guides that work in the area hear many stories about what the most unique question is asked
to guides and the one that surfaced is a couple of Americans asked the shing guide “When do the smoked salmon start running?”

Neil HaversSpecial to the Mirror
I soon learned a cruise aboard the MV Uchuck III is a
voyage of discovery. Upon arrival we dis-
covered the spectacular wilderness beauty of Vancouver Island’s wild west coast on this hot summer day in August. Once en route we wit-nessed the day-to-day workings of a coastal freighter as she deliv-
ers provisions to a fish. And we visited British Columbia’s birthplace, Friendly Cove (Yuquot) the final destination point of this day cruise.
Departing from the Gold River Govern-ment Wharf we were treated to a natural phenomenon; a green algae bloom that tinted the inlet and the open ocean a light robin’s egg blue, similar to what you would see in glacial melt waters such as
Butte inlet. This occurs naturally each year in August and made the scenery that much more spectacular.
The MV Uchuck III departed from Gold River, heading up Muchalat Inlet. On this trip a stop was made at a Grieg Seafoods fish farm to drop off bundles of feed for the penned salmon. This gave us an opportunity to watch the First Mate deftly lift the bundled feed from the
ship’s hold onto the dock using a union purchase winch and crane system. This is old school at its best and very interesting to watch.
The MV Uchuck III continued down the Inlet along the shore of Bligh Island. This island was named after Wil-liam Bligh who was, at the time, Captain Cook’s navigating officer on the ‘Resolution’ in the 1700s. He later gained
infamy as Captain on the ‘Bounty’ mutiny. We made a brief stop at Resolution Cove, this is the site where contact was first made between the Europeans and the Mowachaht natives. Captain Cooked stopped here to make repairs to the ‘Discovery’ and ‘Resolution’. Trade soon commenced, sparking the sea otter fur trade at Friendly Cove, locally known as Yuquot, the
traditional summer home of Chief Maqui-nna and the Mowachaht people.
Crossing Nootka Sound we arrived at our final destination, Friendly Cove. Walking from the dock to this Pacific Peninsula you cross into a different world; a world steeped in history and natural beauty. This is a quiet place, it calms you. Waves from the open
Pacific wash upon miles of pebbled shoreline, the receding water rolls the beach pebbles, creat-ing an almost breathing sound that is very mov-ing, and calming.
There was much to do on our three-hour stop-over; hike the shoreline trail past an old cem-etery buried in the rain forest, spend time on the beach, visit the historic church that is home to traditional house totems and visit the Lighthouse and its keepers.
The trip back offered more spectacular scenery as we cruised around the other side of Bligh Island. We saw porpoises and bald eagles, unfortunately no Grey or Humpback Whales were spotted on this trip.
The MV Uchuck III offers day cruises to Friendly Cove Wednes-days and Saturdays (June to September).

Inglin, Franz (Frank) Karl
May 24, 1924 -August 12, 2014
Frank passed away peacefully in his sleep. Predeceased by his wife Silvana and his brother Joe, he is survived
by his sister Anna, his sons Ocean (Amanda) and Mike (Laurie), and his granddaughters Rachel, Elizabeth, and Katelyn.Frank was born in St. Galen, Switzerland. He was the oldest of three children and was raised by his single mother, Rosina. As a youth, he worked sweeping the market floors after school to contribute to the household income. Like all Swiss men, he served two years in the Swiss army where he was also a marching drummer. He was trained and apprenticed as a machinist. Frank met Silvana in 1947 in Lausanne, Switzerland when she moved there to find work from Florence, Italy after the war. They married in 1948 and in 1949 they made a notable trip on Frank’s motorcycle to Florence to meet her family.Frank and Silvana immigrated to Canada in 1952. Like so many other immigrants from Europe, they entered Canada at Pier 49 in Halifax. Some stayed in the Maritimes, but the rest of the new arrivals embarked across Canada by train. Many got off at Montreal and Toronto, but Frank and Silvana were headed for BC because Frank had done his research and being Swiss and an avid outdoorsman, he wanted to be where the mountains were. After a year, living in New Westminster, doing odd jobs and trying to make a go of it, Frank got a job as a millwright in Ocean Falls. It was in Ocean Falls that they started their family with first son Richard (Ocean) born in 1954 and second son Michael (Mike) born in 1955. It was also in Ocean Falls that they met and befriended many of the people who would become lifelong friends. Frank enjoyed Ocean Falls for the hunting, fishing and the close and supportive community that existed there. In 1962, Frank transferred to Elk Falls mill in Campbell River. Frank loved Campbell River and referred to it as God’s Country. Soon after arriving, they purchased a house with two acres at Shelter Point. Over the next few years, Frank built a new house where the family resided and where the boys grew to adulthood.Frank retired in 1986 and in the late 1980s, they moved to a house on Twillingate Rd. In the early 1990s, they moved to Willow Point Villas. Silvana passed away in September 2000. Shortly after that, Frank made a solo trip to Hong Kong and Australia to visit relatives. He subsequently made another trip to the Philippines. In the last decade of his life, Frank was fortunate to meet Marie Mychan who became his loving friend. They had a wonderful relationship and did many fun things together. Indeed, Marie was welcomed into the family by all.In the last years of his life, Frank was fortunate to be a regular attendee of the Campbell River Adult Daycare Society. The family would wholeheartedly like to thank the women there who enriched his life in a warm and supportive way; as well, the family's gratitude goes out to the home support workers who came into Frank's home to help him manage an independent lifestyle as long as was possible. They were notable for their gentle, compassionate care.Frank will be missed.A memorial for Frank will be held at Sutton’s Campbell River Funeral Home on August 25, 2014 at 1pm. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.
E. JeanPaquette
March 1, 1923 -August 5, 2014
Mom always disliked her first name, so we are not telling now!Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband
Paul, survived by her children Peter Lea and Linda (Philip), and brothers Ross (Serena) and Billy (Judy) and numerous nieces and nephews.Jean was the glue that held an extended family and circle of friends together around the globe. In the age of the internet, her phone and postage bills would prover her happy efforts to stay in touch with friends in England and the U.S. and family from Iqaluit to Ontario, and B.C. to Nova Scotia.Jean let her life by example, showing only her best self to the world and family. Criticism and judgement were not part of her nature. Guidance was offered only when requested; love given always. Through fragile looking in the last years, Jean survived lung cancer, cataracts, and life as an air-force wife. She was far tougher than she looked. Her skills as a bookkeeper helped the family business - Early's Building Supply - grow and prosper over 30 years before selling and retiring with our wonderful Dad. She used those bookkeeping skills again, assisting her condo Strata Council when asked. She will be happy to know that all her accounts are now balanced - though a little miffed at the humour.Thank you to the nursing staff, Dr. Jacobs and all the attending doctors who assisted Mom and us through the last months. At Mom's request, there will be no service. No flowers please; donate to your choice of charities. We gladly welcome friends and family to join us Saturday, August 30, 2014, between 1:00 and 4:00pm, at 303-539 Island Hwy, to pay tribute and commemorate our Mom.

FINNEGAN, Patrick Joseph
November 28, 1943 – August 18, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, brother, uncle and friend at the age of 70 years. Patrick was
born in Inniskeen, County Monaghan, Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1965. He first worked in the paper mill in Ocean Falls, B.C. and moved to Tahsis, B.C. in 1967 to work in the saw mill where he worked until he retired. In 1968, he returned to Ireland for his first visit home where he met the love of his life, Teresa. They were married on August 6, 1970 and lived together in Tahsis where they raised their daughter Jennifer together among family and friends. He will be remembered for his vegetable and flower garden, love of hockey pools and riding his bike around town.
Patrick was predeceased by his father Peter (1958), Aunt Mary “Nana” (1971), mother Katie (1993), sister in-law Mary (2004), brother Peadar (2007), nephew Seamus (2009) and his beloved wife Teresa in 2012. Patrick leaves behind his daughter Jennifer, sister Anna (John), brothers Frank, Seamus (Nora), Brendan and Michael, and extended family. 30 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR | FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2014 www.CampbellRiverMirror.com
How many of today’s NHL stars made those very early morning trips to junior practice in a min-ivan? Of course, we will never know for sure but you can bet the answer is in the 100s, judg-ing by the tens of thousands of kids, enrolled in hockey, soccer and countless other activities, who have been transported for the past 30 years in these peo-ple movers, pioneered Chrysler.
Virtually every auto maker has a version though in recent years, with the explosion of sport util-ity and crossover vehicles there has been a trend away from the vehicle dubbed ‘mom’s taxi’ in the popular media. At first, that was an affectionate moni-ker but of late, it’s come to be a disparaging term for these very efficient family carriers now described as multi-purpose ve-hicles.
No, they’re not leading edge in looks for the most part but surely that’s not why people still buy them in goodly numbers. Minivans are utilitarian but it’s also true to say that today’s it-erations are no longer glorified vans with seats. They come close to driving like sedans and the higher end models are a step away from limo status.
The loaded 2014 Grand Cara-van SXT version I drove recently certainly could lay claims to be much more than mom’s taxi. Premium cloth seats were invit-ing and supportive but the rear seating is perhaps the more in-teresting for those with afore-mentioned early morning drive duties. The stow’n’go seats are ingenious, turning the Caravan quickly with the flick of a wrist from a seven-seater into . . . dare I say . . . a van if desired. Power sliding doors and lift-gate complete the convenience package. An area where the Caravan has made giant leaps is right upfront. The onepiece instrument panel is easy on the eye and easy to operate. An optional “super” centre console builds on the function-ality, providing a lot of storage. Stepping outside there’s an in-teresting
innovation called the Stow ‘n Place roof rack system, which enables the stowing of the roof bows into the side rails when not in use. There is an obvious cosmetic improvement but that would be a frivolous con-sideration. The ability to stow

Safety Tip:With summer plans often including more time on the road, make sure you assess your tires before a road trip. Check them regularly for air pressure, tread
depth, and always replace tires with bulges, cuts, or cracks.

Mom’s taxi now closer to a family limo than a seven-seat vanHow many of today’s NHL stars made those very early morning trips to junior practice in a minivan?Of course, we will never know for sure but you can bet the answer is in the 100s, judging by the tens of thousands of kids, enrolled in hockey, soccer and count-less other activities, who have been transported for the past 30 years in these people movers, pioneered Chrysler.Virtually every auto maker has a version though in recent years, with the ex-plosion of sport utility and crossover vehicles there has been a trend away from the vehicle dubbed ‘mom’s taxi’ in the popular media. At first, that was an affection-ate moniker but of late, it’s come to be a disparaging term for these very efficient family carriers now described as multi-purpose vehicles. No, they’re not leading edge in looks for the most part but surely that’s not why people still buy them in goodly numbers. Minivans are utilitarian but it’s also true to say that today’s iterations are no longer glorified vans with seats. They come close to driving like sedans and the higher end models are a step away
from limo status. The loaded 2014 Grand Caravan SXT version I drove recently certainly could lay claims to be much more than mom’s taxi. Premium cloth seats were inviting and supportive but the rear seating is perhaps the more interesting for those with aforemen-tioned early morning drive duties. The stow’n’go seats are ingenious, turning the Caravan quickly with the flick of a wrist from a seven-seater into . . . . dare I say . . . a van if
desired. Power sliding doors and liftgate complete the convenience package. An area where the Caravan has made giant leaps is right upfront. The one-piece instrument panel is easy on the eye and easy to operate. An optional “super” centre console builds on the functionality, providing a lot of storage.Stepping outside there’s an interesting innovation called the Stow ‘n Place roof rack system, which enables the stowing of the roof bows into the side rails when not in use. There is an obvious cosmetic improvement but that would be a frivolous consideration. The ability
to stow the roof bows a reduction in aerodynamic drag, wind buffeting and thus better overall efficiency.Under the hood is the truly tried and tested Pentastar 3.6-litre V6, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. This power combination pumps out 283 horsepower but still remains frugal when it comes to fuel economy – 12.2/7.9 L/100 kms.Driving in town with such a large vehicle is not so much of challenge as you might expect. The excellent vision provided by large windows helps when parking in those tight supermarket spots. Stop/go traffic on Highway One was not fun and certainly spoiled the fuel
economy promise. That said, once rolling on the freeway, the Caravan hits its stride and return to sipping gas rather than gulping. The basic Caravan is anything but basic in its equipment tally and starts at $27,995. The tester was loaded to the gunwales with every bell and whistle and came in at $43,580. Take out the basic for the test drive then start adding the features you want until you run up against budget wall.‘Mom’s taxi’ is going to be around for a while yet and that’s good news for sports oriented families and maybe even the National Hockey League.

Safety Tip:With summer plans often including more time on the road, make sure you assess your tires before a road trip. Check them regularly for air pressure, tread
depth, and always replace tires with bulges, cuts, or cracks.
Question of the WeekDo you think crossover and sport utility vehicles will ever completely replace the minivan – or mom’s taxi as it is often dubbed?

Duck DipPROCESS
Passage on the Passage
The Discovery Passage Passage went off without a hitch again last Saturday. A flotilla of canoes, kayaks, rowboats and paddleboards (top two photos) made the annual trek to Cape Mudge and back as a reminder of a time past when links between Cape Mudge and Camp-bell River were done by human-powered boats. Upon arriving in Cape Mudge (right), partici-pants paid homage to Cape Mudge’s traditional canoe before heading back on the turning tide. Notable participants were Don McIvor who at 88 was the oldest to cross, having rowed in the event every one of its eight years; Jamie Boulding and the Nordic Ski Team from Strath-cona Park Lodge; and the Bravehearts dragon boat team.
