m. ?MARGARET SOMERVILLE of Carnwath, d. of William Sommerville and Margaret of New Bigging, g-d. of Sir Thomas Sommerville? AFRAIG- d. of either Cailean Mac Dhonnchaidh or Niall, Earl of Carrickd.c.1280

It was first suggested in the 1970's that Gilleasbaig married Afraig the daughter of Cailean Mac Dhonnchaidh or of his son Niall, Earl of Carrick. This means that she was a cousin of the future king Robert the Bruce which explains why the Campbells were so attached to the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence.(3)

In 1263 Gilleasbaig received from the Crown the lands of Menstrie and Sauchie, Stirlingshire (now Clackmannanshire).(1) He was a witness in 1266 to a charter from King Alexander III to the monks of Lindores.(2)

Cailean Mor Caimbeul was knighted about 1280 and appears in a charter about 1281 by Malcolm, Earl of Lennox to the lands of Luse.(1) He was also one of the supporters of his cousin Robert Bruce's claim to the Scottish throne and was one of his advocates to King Edward I in 1291.(2) In 1293 he received from Sir William Lindsay the lands of Symontoun, Ayrshire and agreed to pay the feu-duty yearly to the monks of Newbattle. In the Newbattle Registrum c.1293 he is called the son of "Gylascop Kambel". Cailean witnessed a charter of James Stewart to Paisley Abbey in 1295 and attested to the marriage of James to the sister of Richard de Burgh, Earl of Ulster in 1296 also in the Paisley Registrum. Cailean also witnessed a charter of Maol Choluim, the contemporary Mormaer or Earl of Lennox, and in another Lennox charter in which he is granted lands in Cowal by John Lamont, one of Maol Chaluim's vassals.

By 1296, and perhaps by 1293, Cailean held the position of "Ballie" of Loch Awe and Ardscotnish, a position he was granted either by King John Balliol or Edward I of England. It was this position that made him the enemy for Iain of Lorn, the MacDougall Lord of Lorne. Sometime after September 1296, Cailean was killed by the MacDougalls at the "Red Ford" on the borders of Loch Awe and Lorne at a place known as the String of Lorne where a cairn marks the spot. So many died in this battle that the stream ran red with their blood, hence the name Red Ford. His tombstone may still be seen.(3)

St. Peter the Deacon, Kilchrenan

Cailean's great fame lies in the fact that the later Earls and Dukes of Argyll claimed descent from him, and styled themselves "Mac Cailein Mór", son or descendant of "Colin the Great".

Neil appears in a charter to the abbey of Cambuskenneth on 17 Oct. 1282.(1) Niall was active in the service of the then Robert, Earl of Carrick in the 1290's. In 1293 Niall was sent to Norway to deliver personal items to Robert's sister, Isabella Bruce, Queen of Norway. He swore allegience to King Edward at Berwick 28 Aug. 1296 and on 10 Sept. he is mentioned as one of the Barons of Argyll and the King's bailie for Lochow and Ardskeodnish. He was a witness to a charter confirmed by Edward I on 10 Oct. 1296.(2)

He was one of the Earl of Ulster's knights when he brought over a contingent from Ireland in 1303 to help King Edward(3) who granted him the ward and marriage of the two daughters of Andrew Crawford.(4) He obtained from Edward a grant 13 Feb. 1301/2 of the custody of land in Cumberland belonging to the heir of Sir Hubert de Multon until the heir becomes of age an also letters patent empowering Hubert's widow Margaret to marry him if she will, however by 8 Jan. 1304 the King had taken back his gift and he gives John de Dovedale a charter of Neil's lands and the ward and marriage of his son which was confirmed at Westminster 24 Oct. 1305.(5) This unusual procedure was probably due to the fact that Neil had joined Robert the Bruce as on 20 June 1306 it is stated that the ward and marriage of Hubert de Multon's heir is in the King's gift "by reason of Nigel Cambel to whom the said custody was formerly granted having betaken himself to Scotland against the King".(6) Neil was a staunch adherant of Robert the Bruce and fought with him in almost every battle from the battle of Methven to Bannockburn. He was present at Scone in March 1306 when Robert was crowned King of Scots. After the defeats at the Battle of Methven and the Battle of Dalrigh, Niall was one of the few knights who stuck by King Robert fighting against the English as well as the MacDougalls in the west of Scotland. He was part of the envoy to Richard de Burgo, Earl of Ulster who had been appointed Edward's commissioner to treat with Robert for terms of peace for which he obtained a safe conduct from Edward 21 Aug. 1309.(7) After Bannockburn, Neil was one of the Commissioners sent to York in Sept. 1314 to negotiate a peace with the English.(8) He was one of the great Barons in the Parliament at Ayr 26 Apr. 1315.

CAMPBELL

As a reward for his long loyal service, King Robert gave his sister, Mary, in marriage to Niall and granted the couple the lands confiscated from David Strathbogie. Poor Mary, along with the King's other female relatives, was captured and betrayed to the English by the Earl of Ross. By order of Edward I she was held prisoner in a cage exposed to public view in Roxburgh Castle until 1310. Isabella MacDuff was imprisoned in a similar cage at Berwick Castle. She was eventually released in exchange for an English nobleman captured at the Battle of Bannockburn. According to "The Borders," by Alistair Moffat, an author from Kelso who specialises in history, the ancient fort of Roxburgh Castle was the location of what is now known as Arthur's "Camelot." In his book "Arthur & the Lost Kingdoms", he provides detailed analysis of the Roman occupation of the area, the Celtic Kingdoms and the language behind place names of the Scottish Lowlands, together with the battles fought by Arthur, concluding that Roxburgh Castle was indeed Arthur's base.

He was granted Lochow and Ardscodysthe (Ardskeodnish) from Robert I dated at Arbroath 10 Feb. 1315 for the service of a 40-oared galley for 40 days per year.(1) He went with the King to Ireland in 1316 to assist King Robert in placing his brother Edward Bruce upon the throne of Ireland. He was at the battle where Edward Bruce was killed fighting against the English. For his service Colin was rewarded a grant of land in Argyll. In 1334 he raised 400 men and assisted the Steward of Scotland in the recovery of Dunoon castle in Cowal from the English for which David II granted him the hereditary keepership of the castle an office still held by the Dukes of Argyll.(2)

On 2 May 1343 David II granted him many forfeited lands including those of his brother Dougall Campbell and the barony of Morfrath (Melfort).(1) He had a grant from Mary, Countess of Menteith of Kilmun which was confirmed by David II 11 Oct. 1363.(2) He also obtained a large grant of land from John Menteith, Lord of Knapdal and Arran 29 Nov. 1352. On 15 March 1368/9 he had a charter to Craignish, Melfort, Straquhir and others.(3)

He was an M.P. and in June 1368 he was directed to come to the King to be bound to keep the peace and restrain maruaders on other lands and because of this obligation he was absent from Parliament at Perth 18 Feb. 1369. At the same time it was proposed that the King and Court should pass through his lands in connection with the price of the wool to be purchased for payment of the King's ransom to England. On 26 March 1371 he paid homage to Robert II at Scone.(4) Robert II granted him Loch Gilp, Earndrome, Loch Melfort and Loch Longe with half the dues of ward and relief within that district.

Colin "Iongarrlach" (the Wonderful) received a charter in 1361 from his kinswoman Christina heiress of Dugald of Craignish to lands in Craignish.(1) In 1364 he had a deed of gift from Robert Erskine of Erskine to Menstrie belonging to the son of John Campbell of Menstrie.(2) He obtained a grant from Robert III to land in Nether Cowal 20 June 1404. He also had a charter from Robert, Duke of Albany to the lands of Strachachy in the barony of Cowal Stewart and of all other lands which he held of the Earl of Menteith dated Stirling 5 May 1409.(3) These grants were mostly in reward for his assisting the King in restraining the incursions of the Highlanders who had invaded the western parts of the country.

Duncan "Na-Adh" had a charter to Menstrie 6 Feb. 1392/3.(1) He succeeded his father about 1414 when with the consent of his son Celestin he confirmed a grant which had been made by his father to his kinsman Ronald Malcolmson of Craignish.(2) He is called "Cambel de Ergyle" in the list of hostages for the release of James I in 1423 and his annual income was given as 1500 marks. He was a member of the privy council and justiciar and lord lieutenant of Argyllshire.(3)

In March 1440 Sir Duncan le Cambel, knight, Lord of Lochawe granted a charter to the church of Dunnovyng or Dunoon giving one half mark from his lands in Ardenaslate for wax candles to be lit before the image of the Virgin Mary in the church in behalf of the souls of his grandfather celestin Cambel and Isabella Lamont his wife, his father Colin Cambel, his mother Mariota, daughter of M'Cwill Cambel, his late wife Marcellina Stewart, his present wife Margaret Stewart and the soul of Celestin, lately his son and heir. The writ is dated Dunoon castle 12 March 1439/0 and was witnessed by his wife Margaret and his sons Nigel and Colin.(4)

He also founded the Collegiate church of Kilmun in Cowal 4 Aug. 1442 which was confirmed 12 May 1450. Sir Duncan founded the church for prebendaries to pray for the souls of his first born son and his first wife, Marjoy. The church was badly damaged by the Lamonts in 1646 when they massacred all those taking refuge in the tower (which is still standing).(5)

On 20 Oct. 1432 Colin received a charter to the lands of Glenurchy from his father who had taken them from the MacGregors. He went three times to Rome and was of the knights of Rhodes.(1) Colin had a charter to Auchiwach (Auchreoch) in Glendochart 27 Oct. 1467.(2) Colin supposedly built Caolchurn Castle in Glenurchy.(3) A charter of 1449 refers to the "apud castrum de Glenurquhay" so by that time some sort of castle was on the site. The castle was originally on an island, however, the water level has dropped and it now lies on a small peninsula.

The story goes that while Sir Colin was off fighting in the Holy Land his wife built for him the castle of Kilchurn on its peninsula at the end of Loch Awe. He was so long absent that it was said he was dead, and the lady, like Penelope in the classic tale, was besieged by suitors. After long delays a neighbouring baron, MacCorquodale, it is said, forced her to a marriage. While the marriage feast was going on, a beggar came to the door. He refused to drink the health of the bride unless she herself handed him the cup. This she did, and as the beggar drank and returned it she gave a cry, for in the bottom lay Sir Colin’s signet ring. The beggar was Sir Colin himself, returned just in time to rescue his wife.

Kilchurn was occupied by the Campbells until the 1740's and was greatly enlarged in 1693.

For his serviced in apprehending one of the murderers of James I (Thomas Chalmer of Lawers), James III on 17 Dec. 1473 granted the barony of Lawers to him, his wife Margaret Stirling and his heirs-male by her.(4)

Portraits of Sir Colin, his father Duncan and other lairds of Glenurchy are given in the Black Book of Taymouth and portraits also appear in the Genealogical Tree at Taymouth Castle painted in 1635 by George Jamesone.

Sir Calein Dubh aquired Glenlyon from the Stewarts of Garth by force of arms. By his second marriage to Janet he inherited one-third of the estate of Lorn.

Sir John was knighted by King James VI and because of his marriage to Margaret was called Lord Loudoun upon the resignation of his father-in-law Dec. 1622.

He and Margaret had a charter to Sorn, Ayrshire 8 Mar. 1620, Hudstoun and others in the barony of Loudoun 26 July 1620, and to Kylesmuir 4 Sept. 1630.(1) Margaret was heir along with her sister Elizabeth to Matthew Campbell of Loudoun their great grandfather in the lands of Benderloch, Argyllshire 22 Nov. 1626.(2)

John was made the Earl of Loudoun and Baron Tarrinyean and Mauchline 12 May 1633, but due to his opposition to the measures of the court the patent was stopped at the chancery and the title superseded until 1641.

In 1637 he distinguished himself by his active resistance to the attempt of Charles I to force episcopacy upon Scotland. He was a member of the Glasgow Asembly of 1638 as elder for the burgh of Irvine and was selected as one of the assessors to the moderator. In the next year he took the castles of Strathaven, Douglas and Tantallon and garrisoned them for the Covenanters. He as one of the commissioers from the Scots army at the settlement of Berwick with Charles I in 1639. Soon after this he was, with the Earl of Dunfermline, sent by the Scots Estates to London to give the King the proceedings of Parliament and were

ordered by the King not to approach nearer than two miles of court when they returned to Edinburgh. On 19 Jan. 1640 he was one of the commissioners sent by the committee of Estates toLondon and was arrested by order of the King on a charge of treason on account of a letter signed by him and six other Scots noblemen and addressed to the King of France asking for his assistance. This letter filled the court with great concern and was read to by the King to the members on the opening of Parliament. Sir John was brought before the English privy council but he refused to give any account of the letter except that it was never sent and that he should be questioned about it in Scotland and not in England. He was put in the Tower of London where he was visited by the Marquis of Hamilton through whose influence with the King he was at last released. After being introduced by the Marquis at court and kissing the King's hand he returned to Scotland. In Aug. 1640 he commanded a regiment of the Scots army at the battle of Newburn, and was one of the commissioners for the treaty of Ripon on 22 Nov. 1641.(3) On 15 July 1641 he presided at the opening of the Scottish Parliament and when the King visited Scotland the next month he was given his title of Earl and was appointed Lord High Chancellor of Scotland and first commissioner of the treasury 20 Sept. 1641 with a salary of £1,000 per year. He had a charter under the Great Seal turning his lands into an earldom 8 Jan. 1644 in favour of himself, Margaret and his son James, Lord Machline. He along with the Earls of Lauderdale and Lanark were sent tosee the King when he was a prisoner in Carisbrook castle, Isle of Wight in 1647 and on 15 Feb. 1648 he presented to the committee of Estates the concessions to which the King had acceded. On 2 Mar. 1648 he was elected president of parliament. John at first agreed with "the Engagement" for the King's relief, but withdrew his support from it when he found it opposed by the church and was disgusted with the violence and insincerity of his associates. Afater the defeat of the Scottish army at Preston and the advance of the Earl of Lanark's force to the border the 6,000 Presbyterians under Chancellor Loudoun and the Earls of Eglinton and Cassillis marched towards Edinburgh toprevent any assistance being given to the King. Jhn supported the act of fClasses which excluded all who were in favour of "the Engagement" from public office. He was at the coronation of Charles II at Scone on 1 Jan. 1650 and at the battle of Dunbar. After the defeat of Charles II at Worster in 1651 he returned to the Highlands and in 1653 joined the Earl of Glencairn who then took up arms for the King. John soon left the Earl and retired to Athol. He was excepted from Cromwell's act of grace and pardon in 1654 by which £400 per year was given out of his estate to his countess and her heirs. At this time numerous attacks had been led against his estates.(4) He submitted to General Monck and lived quietly until the Restoration when he was deprived of his office of chancellor and fined £12,000.

"Calein the Grey" was the 6th Laird Campbell of Glenorchy. In 1550 Colin built Balloch Castle which was eventually extended to form Taymouth Castle which is probably the finest and most important Scottish castle still in private ownership. Taymouth remained in the Campbell family until shortly after Word War I when the Breadalbane estate was broken up.

James VI visited Balloch Castle in Aug. 1582 tipping the gardener 40/... only a few days later he was seized at the Ruthven Raid.(1) After being rebuilt as Taymouth Castle by Lord Breadalbane it was visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1842. In her diaries the Queen described her reception. "There were a number of Lord Breadalbane's Highlanders, all in the Campbell tartan, drawn up in front of the house, with Lord Breadalbane himself in a Highland dress at their head, a few of Sir Niall Menzie's men (in the Menzie's red and white tartan), a number of the pipers playing, and a company of the 92 Highlanders also

in kilts. The firing of the guns, the cheering of the great crowd, the picturesqueness of the dresses, the beauty of the surrounding country with its rich background of wooded hills, altogether formed one of the finest scenes imaginable. It seemed as if a great chieftan in old and feudal times was receiving his sovereign."

The Campbells of Breadalbane were one of Scotland's greatest landowning families. At its height their estate extended to 437,696 acres and was over 100 miles long. From Aberfeldy it was possible to reach the west coast of Scotland without leaving the Breadalbane's land and at its core lay Taymouth, a vast baronial castle, built at the height of the family's power.

CAMPBELL

Some entries give Beatrix's parents as Sir Colin Campbell and Catherine Ruthven and others give Sir Colin Campbell and Margaret Stewart. A Sir Colin did marry a Margaret Stewart, but in the 1400's and died 1523. The only Sir Colin of Glenorchy in the mid 1500's was the one who married Catherine Ruthven. The references to Margaret Stewart are thus considered to be in error, even though those are the references which give a more precise date of birth for Beatrix.
