CAMPAIGN REVIEW 2013

WELCOME to our 2013 review issue. The ScrapTrident campaign made some good progress thisyear, with our strong message on the economic cost

of Trident receiving a lot of support. As we face devastatingcuts in our public services, people are realising that the £100billion bill for replacing Trident is not only criminally insane butimmoral as well.

Unfortunately we still have to get thismessage through to the leadership of themain political parties. The LiberalDemocrats supported cutting back on theUK’s nuclear weapons system, rather thangetting rid of it and Labour leaders refusedto discuss the issue at their annualconference. However, CND held packedand supportive fringe meetings at bothparty conferences and grassroots supportfor getting rid of Trident was very strong

and is growing. We also have the total support of the Green Party,Plaid Cymru and the Scottish National Party.

Our long-standing campaign on demanding an alternative to warbore fruit this year, with the parliamentary vote against an attackon Syria. The vote made it clear that lessons have been learned. This decision prevented an invasion and led to increaseddiplomatic progress. Agreements have since been reached todismantle Syria’s chemical weapons and on Iran’s nuclear activity.

We now have less than three years until the vote on whether toreplace Trident. This could be a once in a generation chance to getrid of nuclear weapons from Britain and set a real example to therest of the world. Imagine how it would feel to be part of such ahistorical moment. As we review some of this year’s work andthank all who have done so much so far, we need to bear in mindthe importance of our work next year. We have a lot planned anda growing level of support – I know it won’t be easy but togetherwe can make Trident history.

Campaign for Nuclear DisarmamentCND campaigns non-violentlyto achieve British nucleardisarmament – for scrappingthe Trident nuclear weaponssystem and preventing itsreplacement.

CND works to secure anuclear weapons conventionwhich will ban nuclearweapons globally, aschemical and biologicalweapons have been banned. We also work to end Britain’sparticipation in the USMissile Defence system and– with other campaignsinter nationally – againstmissile defence andweapons in space.

Other current campaignsinclude the prevention andcessation of wars in whichnuclear weapons may beused, opposition to NATOand its nuclear policies, andto nuclear power.

CND is funded entirely bymembers and supporters, and our policies are decidedupon by our annual nationaldelegates’ conference, whereour national leadership is alsoelected.

Details of our nationaloffices, and our network ofregions can be found at theback of this Review.

Scrap Trident – no OURfocus continues

Throughout the year wehave lobbied and protested atall levels of society, highlightingthe danger of nuclear weaponsand highlighting what themoney spent on replacingTrident could pay for instead. The possibilities includescrapping tuition fees andemploying 150,000 teachers andnurses. CAMPAIGN REVIEW 2013

OURanti-nuclearpower campaigninghas had an increased

profile following the disastrousevents at the site of theFukushima power plant inJapan and the UK govern -ment’s willingness to subsidisenew nuclear power in the UK.The government has agreed a‘strike price’ with EDF Energyfor electricity to be producedfrom a new nuclear powerstation at the Hinkley site inSomerset. CND opposes theconstruction of new nuclearpower stations in the UK. Anew reactor at Hinkley wouldbe the first one built heresince 1995.The coalition government

seems intent on promotingnuclear energy, also this yearagreeing to support thefinancing of the developmentof a new nuclear power stationat the Wylfa site on Anglesey,Wales. This is despite thedevastating problems at theFukushima site. The companywhich runs the site was forcedto admit that highlyradioactive water has beenleaking out to sea. Many events took place to

mark the two year anniversaryof the nuclear disaster atFukushima. Mid SomersetCND & Peace Group held a

stall in Wells where Fukushimaresidents spoke about thedevastation. London RegionCND participated in a marchto Parliament from theJapanese Embassy, a candle-litvigil and a public meeting inthe House of Commons with apanel of eminent nuclearscientists, engineers anddisaster survivors. HaringeyCND also held a publicmeeting with a Japanesespeaker.

Merseyside CNDcommemorated Chernobyl Dayby showing the documentary‘Chernobyl Heart’. EastLancashire CND distributedwell-received literature on theday to students outside BurnleyCollege.

Hereford Peace Counciljoined a Stand against Oldburydemonstration. The site there

has

been earmarked by thegovernment as suitable for anew nuclear power station. Thepeace council also contactedthe Bishop of Hereford to statetheir opposition to nuclearpower. He had said in theHouse of Lords that nuclearpower should be developedusing tritium and molten saltreactors.A Merseyside CND

member set up new group –the ‘Close CapenhurstCampaign’. The alliance oforganisations and individuals, which has already receivedsupport from the LiverpoolGreen Party, will campaign toclose down the uraniumenrichment site in Cheshire.

Cumbria and LancashireArea CND spent the early partof the year opposing thegovernment’s plans for aradioactive waste repository inCumbria. After a lot ofcampaigning, members weredelighted when CumbriaCounty Council voted againstthe development. Thecampaign continues however, after the governmentannounced plans to changehow planning permission isgranted. Local town councilsmay now be able to approvethe plans for a nuclear wastesite in the area.

Nuclear power – not theanswer to climate change

Government spin doctors and the nuclearindustry myth makers are working over-timerepackaging nuclear power as a ‘green’ solutionto climate change. While many other countriesare rejecting nuclear power in the wake of theFukushima tragedy, our own government isgoing ahead, backing new nuclear powerstations. But nuclear power is no fix, it’s notquick and it’s not worth the risk.

Nuclear power is not the answer. It isnot carbon-free, the whole nuclear cycle fromuranium mining onwards produces moregreenhouse gases than most renewable energysources, with up to 50% more emissions thanwind power. Doubling nuclear power in the UKwould only reduce greenhouse gas emissions by8% and this would come too late as eachpower station takes at least ten years to be upand running. We must act now on climate change.A combination of renewable energy sources andenergy efficiency measures are available and aresafe, effective, and proven technologies with thecapacity to create thousands of new jobs.

CND CYMRU has beenas active as ever thisyear, with the highlight

for many members being partof the huge Scrap Tridentdemonstration in Glasgow inApril. There was a lot ofdemonstrating this year, asCND Cymru blockaded theFaslane base in the spring andAWE Burghfield in the autumn, taking our red dragon andsinging voices with us!It was an honour for CND

Cymru to represent Wales at theAbolition 2000 Conference inEdinburgh, being able to speak(in Welsh) against nuclearweapons in the ScottishParliament.Back in Wales, we achieved

some success in our campaignfor an Academi Heddwch/ -Wales Peace Institute. TheNational Assembly PetitionsCommittee published a docu -ment supporting the principlefor establishing such an institute. This news could not have comeat a better time as we face manythreats to peace here in Wales, not least the NATO summitdue to be held in Newport nextSeptember. This year has alsoseen a surge in concern aboutmilitary drones. CND Cymruplayed a central role in settingup the Drone CampaignNetwork Cymru/Rhwydwaith

Ymgyrch Dronau Cymru and inorganising an excellentdemonstration at Aberporthdrones testing site in September.Working with our anti-

nuclear power comrades, CNDCymru held events and vigils atHinkley Point (15 miles fromthe south Wales coast) and bythe small Menai Bridge whichwould have to be crossed bythose fleeing from any nuclear

accident or incident at Wylfa, onYnys Môn.Being very much part of the

extraordinary goings on at theweekend long Street ChoirsFestival in Aberystwyth was ahighlight of the year.Bruce Kent’s Scrap Trident

Tour came to Wales this year.We arranged a visit toLlandudno and a public meetingat the Temple of Peace inCardiff. There was also a verysuccessful meeting at theNational Assembly in Cardiff, with Assembly Members ofthree political parties present, including the Conservative party.CND Cymru now looks

forward to 2014, especially thedebate on disarmament whichthe Scottish referendum willinevitably encourage.

SCND hosted varioustalks over the year, includingRob Green speaking aboutdeterrence, Vijay Mehtapresenting how the West fuelswar and poverty and AlanMackinnon and VeronikaTudhope reporting back fromthe NPT and Osloconferences. SCND played a significant

role in the Abolition 2000event in Edinburgh whichbrought together parlia ment -arians and activists from anumber of countries. SCNDsupported various otherinitiatives such as the Handsoff Syria rally and a seminarwith Nuclear-Free LocalAuthorities. We organised anevent for the Iona-Londonpilgrims as they passed throughGlasgow. The Hiroshima and

Nagasaki anniversary wascommemorated by all our local

groups, through peace walks, vigils and various othergatherings. SCND took part insummer festivals like Belladrumand Glasgow West EndFestival and had a presence inthe West End Parade whichhad a great visual impact. As well as working closely

with CND UK to arrange arally at the Lib Dems’ annualconference, SCND held stallsand fringe meetings at theannual gatherings of the SNP,Green Party and Labour. Adelegation of SCND had ameeting with the First Minister,Alex Salmond. He expressedhis support for a constitutional

Parliament and partiesTHE government’s

Trident Alternatives Reviewdominated discussions

on nuclear weapons inParliament in the first half of theyear. The Liberal Democratsinsisted on the review as part ofthe Coalition Agreement in2010. Published in July, thereview concluded that the onlyviable alternative was to cut thenumber of submarines and bringan end to continuous patrolsthat ensure the system is readyto fire at any moment. CNDresponded by publishing ourown Real AlternativesReview, making the case for non-replacement and nuclear disarm -ament, which the review hadfailed even to consider. MPsfrom a number of parties joinedus in launching our reviewoutside the House of Commons, including former CND ChairDame Joan Ruddock MP.CND hosted a side meeting

with a cross-party panel of UKparliamentarians at the Non-Proliferation Treaty meeting inGeneva. CND vice-chair JeremyCorbyn MP, Lib Dem Sir NickHarvey MP and the SNP’s BillKidd MSP were grilled by anaudience of diplomats andinternational activists. At the party conferences,

there were missed opportunitiesfor the political establishment

but signs of real support fornuclear disarmament. The Trident Alternatives Review

formed the basis of the newpolicy adopted at the Lib Demconference, which CNDcondemned as ‘Trident-lite’ anda ‘historic missed opportunity’.Despite a Scrap Trident rallysupported by Scottish CNDand a packed CND fringemeeting, the party’s position isnow to replace Trident but witha reduced number ofsubmarines and an end tocontinuous patrols. Trident did not feature on

the agenda of Labour’s annual

conference but members of theNational Policy Forum havecontinued to build oppositionto Trident and a number ofprospective parliamentarycandidates have declared theiropposition to the UK’s nuclearweapons system. Thanks to Greater

Manchester and DistrictCND for helping at theConservative Party Conference. Our NHS Not Trident messageon the TUC demonstration washighly visible on the day and inthe media coverage. With the 2015 General

Election increasingly dominatingthe thoughts of politicalactivists, we are beginning toplan our election campaign forCND supporters to take totheir candidates as they beginto compete for your supportnext year.

Peace Education

IThas been a busy year forthe Peace Education team.We have set up a school

speakers service and establisheda network of volunteers todeliver talks and workshops inschools. Students have beenkeen to learn about peace andnuclear issues and activelyengaged in debating whethernuclear weapons are needed forsecurity. Since the projectstarted we have delivered 65sessions to 3,865 students. Wecontinued to attend educationalevents across the country andhave recently produced a new

education resource. Our new resource pack,

Truman on Trial, was launchedjust before the summerholidays. Students find outwhat happened in Hiroshimaand Nagasaki using sources, then they do a mock trial to

decide whether or not thebombing was justified. Theresource has been very wellreceived, with a teachingjournal describing it as‘excellent’, praising the resourcefor including a ‘multitude ofparticipatory learning metho -dologies’. Almost 1000 havealready been distributed. Our

resources have also beenpopular on the website of theTimes Education Supplement – over43,000 copies have now beendownloaded. Teacher trainingsessions have also been popularand have received excellentfeedback.

‘I would like to thank you for a fantastic educational dayat St. Andrew’s School. Your peace education workshopand assembly on nuclear warfare was incredibly informa -tive and moving and really helped myself and thestudents understand the reality and impact of nuclearwarfare. We hope to be engaging you again this year’.

CNDhas received greatmedia attention in 2013,with highlights including

live broadcasts from our ScrapTrident protests andinternational coverage of ouranti-war campaigning. On 1st April we held a Stop

Fooling With Nuclear Weaponsprotest at the Atomic WeaponsEstablishment in Aldermastonwhich had national and inter -national media attention, withthe BBC reporting live from thedemonstration. The NHS Not Trident t-

shirts produced for us byacclaimed fashion designerKatharine Hamnett have been aresounding success – withnewspaper features and onlinecoverage providing a greatplatform for getting across thescrap Trident message. The t-shirts have also proved hugelypopular with celebrities (and youguys!) – with acts likePortishead, Fatboy Slim, andEnter Shikari wearing themduring headline sets atGlastonbury Festival, Bestivaland Download Festival.Speaking of Glastonbury: the

lovely people in Portisheadworked with us to make a ScrapTrident video which theybroadcast during theirheadline slot – going out tomillions worldwide over the

CND in the media

BBC’s coverage. A tour of the country by

veteran peace campaigner andCND Vice-President BruceKent garnered great regionaland local coverage. The Scrap

Trident Tour took Bruce toaround 30 destinations includingBristol, Durham, Liverpool,Manchester and many more –with broadcast and printattention along the way.

2013 was also a landmarkyear for CND’s anti-warcampaigning. We co-organisedthe first ever national protestagainst drones at RAFWaddington. Footage of thedemo went out on Sky, BBC,ITV, Channel 4 and inter -national broadcasters – and alsoprompted a huge debate aboutthe issue of drone warfare innewspapers and online media. The world’s gaze was also on

our demonstrations against anattack on Syria: a US war whichwas derailed because of theUK’s refusal to take part. Mediacommentators across thepolitical spectrum acknow -ledged the role played inaverting war by the legacy ofthe Iraq war and the anti-warmovement in the UK. We’ve also been building on

our social media presence whichhas grown significantly in thepast year: but we need your help!Join the conversation on Twitterand like our page on Facebookto get regular campaigningupdates and for simple actionsyou can take in the fight to scrapTrident.
