BAPTISM OF OUR LORD/CAMP SUNDAY January 10, 2021 9:00 Drive In & 10:00 AM Online Lutheran Church of the Cross, Nisswa, Minnesota

Rev. Drew Bakken

GOOD MORNING & WELCOME TO LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE CROSS! Welcome to worship as we come together in praise and thanksgiving to our living Savior!

Holy Spirit, blow through our church with power. Open our hearts to follow your call.

INTRODUCTION Our re-creation in baptism is an image of the Genesis creation, where the Spirit of God moved over the waters. Both Mark’s gospel and the story in Acts make clear that it is the Spirit’s movement that distinguishes Jesus’ baptism from John’s. The Spirit has come upon us as upon Jesus and the Ephe-sians, calling us God’s beloved children and setting us on Jesus’ mission to re-create the world in the image of God’s vision of justice and peace.

PRELUDE “10,000 Reasons” Chorus Bless the Lord, O my soul; Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I’ll worship Your Holy name.

1. The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, it’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. To chorus

2. You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger. You name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing; Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. To chorus

3. And on that day, when my strength is failing, the end draws near, and my time has come; Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years, and then forevermore! To chorus

READING Genesis 1:1-5 Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the formless void, God brings light. This familiar story was good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their history. It remains good news for us. God created and continues to create new life.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Halle, Halle, Halle”

Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah. Halle, Halle, halle-lujah. Halle, Halle, halle-lujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

Caribbean Traditional Public Domain

GOSPEL Mark 1:4-11 Mark’s gospel reports the story of Jesus’ baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spirit descends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit.

The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Do you think they are just strange creatures that show up in the Bible at pivotal moments? Do you realize that all angels don’t have wings? Would you believe the word angel appears 329 times in scripture? What do you think our relationship as humans is with the angels? Psalms 8 even speaks of a dance of humans and angels! Creation Care Green Tip While Minnesota missed the target set in the state's 2007 Next Generation Energy Act to cut greenhouse gas emissions (15% by 2015) as well falling behind on meeting its next target (40% by 2025), the Governor's newly appointed Advisory Council on Climate Change is tasked with redoubling efforts to hit its ultimate target of cutting emissions by 80% by 2050. The 15-member citizen council will advise his new Climate Change Subcabinet headed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Commissioner Laura Bishop, and is comprised of farmers, academics, utility executives, tribal officials and others. Emissions from power plants and energy production in Minnesota have fallen, but emissions from agriculture and transportation, especially passenger vehicles, have not. The MPCA plans to open a new period of public comments and hearings on its Clean Cars measure to require automakers to deliver more fuel-efficient vehicles for sale in Minnesota that will include battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and hydrogen-fueled vehicles. With nearly a dozen other states already adopting such standards, and with the final rule expected to be adopted in 2021, LET ELECTED OFFICIALS know that you support these efforts.
