It is easier than ever to apply for a paid or volunteer position at camp. If you are interested in a paid position, go to www.susumcamps.org, “Resources & Forms” and print an application. Mail your completed application to the Site Director at the camp where you wish to work. (Addresses on site pages)

People we are looking for include:

Camp Penn Lifeguard, Craft Person, Maintenance, Kitchen Staff

Greene HillsLifeguard, Craft Person,

Challenge Course Person, Maintenance

Wesley ForestLifeguard, Nature Resource,

Challenge Course Person, Maintenance

If you want to be a volunteer for a particular camp session, you may send your application to the Dean of that particular week. If you want to be a volunteer, but don’t know which session, contact the Camp & Retreat Ministry Office at 800-874-8474 or [email protected].

Site Directors Each of the camp sites is managed by a site director who is present throughout the entire camping season, managing the care of the site and providing a clean, safe and hospitable environment for all campers.

Deans These adults, including both clergy and lay people, provide leadership and supervision for one camp event. They recruit, train and supervise the counselors for their session of camp and plan and lead the worship experiences.

Counselors Counselors are adults, 18 years of age or older, who are responsible for the direct supervision of the campers. Assistant counselors ages 16 and 17 are allowed to assist with the elementary camps, but do not have supervisory responsibilities.

Summer Staff These young adults work at camp before, during and after the campers attend to ensure a safe and clean physical environment. They serve as lifeguards, supervise the challenge courses, staff the nature resource programs, and perform many other vital duties. They work under the supervision of the site directors.

All staff and volunteers responsible for overnight supervision of campers are 18 years old or older, and at least five years older than the oldest youth under their supervision.

www.susumcamps.orgWhy Register Online? It’s fast, easy and the best way to guarantee your camper gets into the camp session that fits your family and church calendar. Once you register and pay, your camper is in. If you need to change your camper’s session later, a session transfer can usually be made at no extra cost … as long as space is available in the session you want.

To register for camp, visit www.susumcamps.org and click on the camper registration link provided. We have a new online registration provider this year. If you have registered online in previous years, you will need to create a new account.

Paper registrations can be printed from the website and mailed. Paper registrations will be processed in the order they are received, and by then the camp may be full!

Register ONLINE today!

NOTE: Additional registration materials may be requested by contacting the Camping Office at [email protected] or by calling 1-800-874-8474 ext. 3602.

There are two levels of fees for most of our summer camp events, based on when you register: by April 8, 2013, and after April 8, 2013. You will see the fees for these events listed as in the following example: by April 8 after April 8

CP12 Senior High Grades 10-12 July 21-26 $325 $345

This means that, if you register by April 8, you will pay the lower price listed, in this case $325 for the week of Senior High camp; if you register April 9 or later, you would pay the second amount listed of $345. Please note: All mailed applications must be postmarked NO LATER THAN April 8 to receive the lower rate.

Events that are exempt from this pricing are the family camp events and the adult retreats. Those prices are fixed.

Q. May a camper request a bunkmate?A. In most cases, a camper may request one bunkmate for their week, but bunkmate requests are not guaranteed. This decision is left up to the Deans of each camp. Bunkmates must be in the same age-level group and of the same gender. Assignments are generally made two weeks before the campers arrive. Campers involved must request each other on the camper registration form.

Q. May I register for an event in an age level other than the one that I should?A. No. Program content is designed to be appropriate for a specific age group. An attempt is made to stay faithful to the age level so that campers don’t have an unhappy time dealing with activities that are not designed for their developmental level.

Q. What does a camper do at a Susquehanna Conference Summer Camp?A. Each week of camp is unique, but all have similar features. All camps provide a wide variety of activities such as swimming, athletics, Bible Study, worship, hikes, nature study, and more. A paid summer staff works together with weekly volunteers to create an environment of faith and fellowship. Every program will take advantage of the natural surroundings, develop a community, and worship God in a Christian camping setting.

Q. Should a camper bring money to camp?A. Crafts and snacks are included in the price for all of our camps. Camp Penn does offer extra crafts and snacks for a fee. Each site has a camp store where items may be purchased on the opening or closing day.

Q. If I am registered for an event, may I change to another one?A. Yes, as long as there is an opening in the new event. Call the Camping Office to request a change or e-mail [email protected]

Q. What happens if I register for camp and cannot attend?A. You must notify the Camping Office immediately in order to get a refund. Full refunds are given up to two weeks before the start of camp, subject to a $50 processing fee. Cancellations within the two weeks prior to the event are only refunded in cases of documented medical concern or death in the family which prohibits attendance. In order to receive this refund, the Camping Office must be notified immediately of any accident or illness, followed by a written request with an accompanying doctor’s excuse within one week. No refunds will be made for any reason after the start of the camp event.

Q. What about homesickness?A. A very important goal of our camping program is a sense of community throughout the camp session. This leads to new friendships, self-expression, and self-confidence in our campers. On occasion, this doesn’t happen within the first day or so. A big concern for parents is obviously homesickness. According to a groundbreaking study by psychologist and camping proponent Chris Thurber, 83% of the campers studied (ages 8-16) reported homesickness for at least one day of camp. The important thing for parents, campers, and staff to remember is that homesickness is a natural feeling and can be overcome in almost all instances. When a camper overcomes their homesickness and stays for the remainder of the camp session, they feel a sense of accomplishment and confidence that will positively influence their ability to overcome other obstacles in life. For more on how to plan for this possibility, visit www.campparents.org

Q. Why can’t campers receive or make phone calls?A. With several types of camps often operating at the same time, we can have over 100 people on site. With activities planned from the time campers arrive until the time they leave, it would be highly disruptive to all campers to stop the group for a few to make or take phone calls. As well, if we allowed campers to call home or parents to check in throughout the week, we’d be undermining their potential to grow over the course of the camp session. Parents are encouraged to write letters which the campers receive at mail call. Campers are encouraged to write home.

Q. Why leave cell phones at home?A. We insist that campers leave their cell phones at home, or turn them in to camp deans at registration, to be returned at the end of camp. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Camp is a time to focus on their walk with Christ. If campers are taking time to text or IM friends back home, their focus is not on their relationship with God or making friendships with others. If parents need to be in touch for any reason, they can call the particular camp at any time and the Site Directors will relay the message in a timely manner.

Q. As a parent, where can I find more resources to help me prepare for my child’s time at summer camp?A. The American Camp Association has a great on-line resource for parents choosing a summer camp and preparing their kids for this experience. Visit www.campparents.org. If this FAQ page has not answered all of your questions specific to the Susquehanna Conference Summer Camps, please e-mail [email protected], or call us at 1-800-874-8474.
