A reminder that Wednesday 16 August is the annual RoyalNational Show public holiday for the Brisbane area. Enjoyyour day off school. OSHC will be closed on this day.

Our school is focusing on Dr David Rose’s Reading to Learn(R2L) program across all year levels. To ensure consistency ofprofessional practice the school has ensured that all teachershave participated in the full professional development program, and that teachers new to the school also have the opportunityto attend relevant PD. Our commitment to the program isbased on analysis of research, peer review and working withother R2L schools. The program is exciting, engaging andcertainly stretches our expectations for student’s engagementand understanding of literacy. An analysis of school dataindicates significant gains across all year levels. I have to saythat I have been very impressed with our student’s deepunderstanding of literacy – certainly not ‘word barking’, but realunderstanding of text.

While we have only just passed the half way point in the schoolyear we are already commencing our planning for 2018. I askparents of students who may be leaving Camp Hill at the end ofthis school year to advise Mrs Somerfield (Enrolment Officer) sothat we can forward plan with accurate student enrolment data.I am pleased to see that most of our Year 6 cohort are visitingtheir future secondary schools.

Best wishesDeborah Driver

Deputy Principal’s ReportIt was two weeks ago that eighty-six weary but happy Year 6students and seven staff (myself included) landed at BrisbaneAirport after six days in Sydney, Canberra and the snow. Aftera very early flight to Sydney on Sunday morning, we made ourway by coach to Canberra. Our first excursion was a guidedtour of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) on Sundayafternoon. On Monday we visited the Museum of AustralianDemocracy at Old Parliament House, “New” Parliament House,Mt Ainslie and Questacon. Tuesday was spent tobogganingon the slopes at Smiggin Holes in the Snowy Mountains. OnWednesday we visited the National Library, the National PortraitGallery and the Australian War Memorial. Wednesday night wasspent at the AIS participating in the “Sports Experience” beforewatching the Men’s World International Volleyball final betweenAustralia and New Zealand. Australia won 3-0! Thursday wasspent at the Australian Electoral Commission, the RoyalAustralian Mint, the Australian Museum and the National

Arboretum. We packed up early on Friday to travel to Sydneywhere we spent the day visiting Taronga Zoo before our lateflight home to Brisbane.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of allyoung Australians being able to visit the National Capital as partof their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families inmeeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Governmentcontributes funding of $60 per student under the Parliamentand Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. This rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of theexcursion.

It is great to report that guides, officials and general membersof the public regularly commented on the exemplary behaviourand manners of the children. Well done all Year 6 Camp Hillstudents and staff!

Habits of the MindIn preparation for the Leadership Programthe Year 5 students are engaged in HoM 5‘Metacognition – Thinking about YourThinking’. The students are looking at:possibilities; how our actions affect others;consequences; and being mindful and

employing strategic planning. As they apply HowardGardener’s Multiple Intelligences, the students are getting to

know themselves better, how they think and feel and theirstrategies for solving problems.

All students are being mindful of being aspersistent as possible especially whenengaging in challenging or boring tasks. Wegive it our best shot, try not to be quittersand stay focused on our goals.

OSHC News

Monday the 24th of July marked the openingof a long-awaited project…the opening ofour new Loose Parts Village. Closed for lessthan ideal reasons, we decided to take thesilver lining approach and ensure theremediation process left us with something truly remarkable forthe children. In line with our philosophy and pedagogy at CampHill OSHC, we wanted an area that fostered careful, considerate play where children can be constructive andcreative and do so in a natural setting. We wanted an areawhere children were encouraged and stimulated to pushappropriate boundaries, overcome challenges and buildresilience. We believe our end product exceeds expectations.

Massive thanks must go to the school faculty, especially theprincipal Deborah Driver for her unwavering support for us inthis project. Our remediation plan was not the easiest, or themost cost effective. It was simply the best outcome for thechildren and this was made clear to the Department. We aredelighted and thankful to have been included as designers andadvisers in the process and we are very excited to implementand observe some amazing play outcomes.

CHAPPY NEWS

AusIdentities

During the holiday break Chappy Mal was able to attend anexcellent Professional Development course called AusIdentities. It is a system that is based upon the four Temperaments, whichwere originally introduced to the public arena by American

Psychologist David Keirsey. These four Temperaments are thenlinked to various Australian animals, the Eagle, the Dolphin, theKangaroo and the Wombat. The benefits of understanding theviewpoint and different learning styles of our young people isimmense, not least because we can communicate better andoften anticipate their needs ahead of time. Take the test andsee what animal you are!
