Lessons From My Child Authors: Cindy Dowling, Neil Nicoll & Bernadette Thomas

Every expectant parent dreams of having a healthy, “perfect” baby. But for some, those expectations are shattered forever with the arrival of a disabled child. Long-cherished hopes must now be set aside as these parents begin to deal with a new, unwelcome reality and take the first tentative steps on a long and challenging life journey.

“Lessons from my Child” is a collection of stories gathered from parents of special-needs children around the world. In their own words, these parents speak openly and honestly about raising a child with intellectual or physical disabilities – the sleepless nights, the long periods of sadness, the tiny triumphs and the ongoing battle to ensure that their child assumes his or her rightful place in the world. The stories are grouped into chapters that reflect the main stages of many parents' journeys as they move from grief, denial and anger to a point where they can accept their situation, and perhaps see their child's disability as embodying a profound life lesson. Each chapter begins with an expert psychological commentary on what parents may be experiencing at that stage.

These accounts from parents allow rare insights into the challenges of their world and reveal the extraordinary rollercoaster of emotions many face daily. What emerges is a testament to human determination and a powerful reaffirmation of the strength of love.

YMCA JT’s Camp Grom “An Adaptive Adventure for the Whole Family”

The YMCA’s JT’s Camp Grom is a day retreat developed especially for wounded veterans and their families, the families of fallen war heroes and children and adults with differing abilities. It is a special place where everyone in the family can spend time to participate, together. Unlike traditional camps, Camp Grom delivers a unique, integrated and adaptive day of activities surrounded by friends and family. As the only family and group facility of its kind on the East Coast, this amazing, 70-acre, beach-style adventure is designed to welcome everyone.

… that Tricare has a home delivery pharmacy program that delivers your medications right to

your door?!?

Check out https://www.express-scripts.com/TRICARE/benefits/homedelivery.shtml for more

info and to see if your medications qualify.

This is an especially useful tool when the timing of your re-fills does not quite match the timing of a PCS move. If moving duty stations, check in with your cur-rent PCM and get any refills needed for about 3 months before arriving at your next duty station to ensure you

have your medications.

“I have my EFMP paperwork filled out,

but now what?”

Send your updated, or initial if first time enrollment, DD2792 packet to the Family Case

worker at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth or the Program Manager at Camp Elmore in Norfolk.

You can hand deliver, scan/email, or fax it to us. We will look it over, make sure all the I’s are

dotted and T’s are crossed, and confirm with you that all is good to go, and then we will send up to Headquarters Marine Corps EFMP. If you have

PCS orders, let us know and we will expedite the review by HQMC.

Questions? Concerns? Still unsure? Call us!
