what not to pack

Blow-up palm trees, personal

electronic devices and per-

fume. Sound like summer

camp? Not really, but these

are items area camp directors and

staff have seen campers bring to sum-

mer camp.

Tidewater Parent spoke with the

Girl Scouts’ Outdoor Program Man-

ager, Emilie McIntosh, Camp Silver

Beach’s Director of Development,

Rhonda Marsh, and Triple R Ranch’s

Program Director Jeanette Hender-

son about what not to bring to sum-

mer camp and why.

The biggest no-no: personal electron-

ic devices. “We don’t allow them for a

couple of reasons. They are costly and

if they get broken or lost, we cannot be

responsible,” said Marsh.

“Electronics are not part of the camp

experience. The whole idea of camp is

to interact with others, learn respect for

them, develop self-esteem and leader-

ship skills. And to make friends that can

last well into adulthood,” Marsh said.

If a child is alone with their Game-

boy, DSI or portable DVD player, that

cannot happen, McIntosh said.

“It is amazing what kids can learn

and how they feel good about them-

selves when they fully engage in the

camp experience,” Marsh said.

Cell phones are also to be left at home,

say the experts. “While you might think

your child needs one to call home or for

you to call them, you never know who

they have loaned it to. They could loan

it to their tent mate who is calling a lot

of people and eating up your minutes,”

McIntosh said.

Food is also off limits. McIntosh

said nocturnal animals can smell

and chew through anything. “We

once had mice chew through a girl’s

backpack, through the inner pock-

et of the backpack and into a sealed

package. I have seen Rubber Maid con-

tainers chewed through,” she said.

Ants can also find their way to food,

Henderson said.

Camper allergies are also a concern.

One child may have peanuts, another

child may have an allergy so severe that

even being in the same room with the

food can cause an outbreak, McIn-

tosh said.

If a parent is worried their child

will not get enough to eat, especially

in the evening, McIntosh suggested

they speak with camp officials prior

to sending their child off to camp.

Valuables, whether they have mon-

etary value or a personal value, should

be left at home. “If it is irreplaceable, it

should be left home because it could get

lost or ruined in the camp environment.

Everything you come with should be

something that you may never see again

and it will be okay,” McIntosh said.

While packing a knife sounds like a

good idea for a camping trip, the direc-

tors said they are not allowed for their

camps. “It can get you into a lot of trou-

ble,” Henderson said.

When it comes to camp attire, all the

veteran campers said pack old clothes

instead of new clothes, because new

clothes get ruined. “And don’t bring

shoes for every outfit. You need a pair

of tennis shoes and a pair of flip flops,”

Henderson said.

Make-up will come off with sweat.

Scented lotions, bath oil and perfume

are not needed unless attracting insects

is the goal. Hair gels, for example, attract

deer fly, Henderson said.

Decorations for the room are not

needed including posters and other large

items. It is also not a good idea to bring

pictures of relatives who have died.

“That makes you really sad and home-

sick at bedtime,” Henderson said.

Veteran parents know how blessed we are: In Hampton Roads, summer camps are widely available for all ages and all hobbies. In fact, the of-ferings are so good that it’s often dif-ficult to make a decision. Dancing? Acting? Horse riding? Art? Chess? Soccer? Tennis?

Just one or all of them?Only two things hold us back: A lack

of time - and a lack of moola. It’s a di-lemma throughout the country.

“For parents who want to provide an enriching summer activity through attending a camp, cost can sometimes be prohibitive,” says Emily Hadfield, a camp coordinator at Westminster College in Salt Lake City.

“Prohibitive” is all relative, of course. For some, a few-hours-a-day camp for five days and $50 might be a budget-buster. For others, an over-night camp charging nearly $500 for seven days might be.

Your first step to containing your cost is organization. And when it comes to booking camps, that means doing your research early, early, early.

Ideally, you’ve already perused camps online or have made plans to at-tend Tidewater Parents’ Camp and Ed-ucation fair, March 19 at Greenbrier Mall from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The more options you’re aware of, the less damage you’ll see in your bank ac-count. You might be able to book an

art camp with a price equivalent to the pay you earn in a few hours - in-stead of a more expensive option that will gobble up your whole week’s pay-check, all because you had several op-tions at your disposal.

Another easy step is to just ask for a discount, says Hadfield.

“Maybe the camp director and staff haven’t thought of a particular dis-count. With enrollments always on

our minds, we may be more likely to entertain a financial arrangement or discount if it means another camper in our program,” she says.

The first option is a scholarship or

www.MyTidewaterMoms.com | S U M M E R C A M P G U I D E 2 0 11 | 9

grant to cover most of the cost. Alicia Zimbalist, public relations manager for the Foundation for Jewish Camp, notes that her One Happy Camper pro-gram provides cash grants to families all over North America. Children at-tending one of 155 nonprofit Jewish overnight camps for the first time may be eligible for the grants, which are typically $1000. They are avail-able to families in Virginia who are PJ Library members (through the PJ Goes to Camp program, an initiative of One Happy Camper) or who attend specific camps. (Families can apply for grants and get more information at www.OneHappyCamp.org.)

And don’t for a second think it’s not OK to ask about such scholarships, out of fear of looking greedy or needy. Rest assured that many people get them. Zimbalist reports that some 20,000 children have benefited from the Foundation for Jewish Camp’s grant offerings.

Your next question after scholar-

ships should be about early-bird dis-counts. Parents can often save from five to 25 percent just by signing up early - and sometimes paying early. Sometimes you don’t even have to pay the whole amount and only need to give a deposit. Worried about chang-ing your mind? Or more likely, your youngster changing her mind? Don’t worry: Most camps offer full refunds if you cancel early enough.

Hadfield also recommends ask-ing about sibling discounts: Can you get a certain percentage off if you book both of your children? Can that even be offered if they attend differ-ent weeks?

If your child is going to a sleep away camp, you might have also attended it when you were young. Camps love this because it shows how much they are appreciated and they want to keep the summer camp tradition going. Ask if “alumni rates” are offered - or if one can be started.

Also think about what you or your

family might be able to offer the camp. Do you have a special skill you could provide to them? Or sup-plies? Trades are welcome by some camps, and no one will ever have to know that you’re benefiting - except maybe your accountant.

As a last resort, you can offer to make payments to the camp, maybe even past their usual due-date dead-line. Making interest-free payments to them is always better than fork-ing over your money to a credit card company.

1. What are your staffing levels?

The American Camp Association,

which accredits camps nationwide,

recommends overnight camps have

at least a 1:6 staff-to-camper ratio for

ages 7 and 8, 1:8 for ages 9 to 14 and

1:10 for ages 15 to 18. For day camps,

standards are 1:8 for ages 6 to 8, 1:10

for ages 9 to 14 and 1:12 for ages 15 to

18. At least 80 percent of staff should

be 18 years or older and all lead coun-

selors at least 16 (and two years old-

er than children they supervise). Staff

should have passed criminal back-

Summer camp can be a pretty scary idea - for parents. The best way

to ease those fears and get excited is to ask lots of questions, camp

directors say. So as another summer approaches, here are 10 popu-

lar inquiries that camps field:

ground checks and completed an ori-

entation session before children arrive.

“All our staff goes through a week of

intense training,” says Cassie Leichty,

director of the YCMA’s Camp Kekoka

in Kilmarnock. “That ensures they are

ready to keep all campers safe physi-

cally and emotionally.”

2. How do you handle homesick-

ness?

Feeling homesick for the first day or

two of camp is very normal, but most

campers adjust well by the second or

third day, says Cris Higginbotham, as-

sistant director of Camp Friendship in

Palmyra, Va. Counselors work hard to

help kids make friends and find activ-

ities they love. Camps generally don’t

have sad kids call home - that can

worsen homesickness - but will keep

parents updated, especially if a child

may need to leave early (which is very

rare). Don’t panic if a camper’s first let-

ter home isn’t happy. “Remember that

camp would have called if your camp-

er was still suffering from homesick-

ness,” says Jeanette Henderson, sum-

mer camp director at Triple-R Ranch

in Chesapeake. “You’ll probably re-

ceive the ‘happy’ mail after the camp-

er is back at home.”

3. How do I know if my child is

ready for camp?

Some good clues: they’ve done well

spending the night away from home

with a friend or family member; they’re

fairly independent and able to handle

basic daily tasks such as showering and

dressing; and they enjoy meeting new

people and trying new activities.

4. How can I help my child pre-

pare for camp?

If possible, visit the camp grounds

and meet staff members in advance;

if not, learn about the daily routine so

the child faces fewer surprises. Tell

kids you’ll miss them but are hap-

py about their upcoming adventure;

don’t tell them they can come home if

they don’t like camp. “Let your camper

know they can ask their counselor for

help in all situations,” Henderson adds.

As for packing, follow camp lists, send

as few items as possible and try to fit ev-

erything into one bag or container.

5. How can I communicate with

my children?

Most camps don’t allow kids to call

home, although parents are welcome to

call and check in with staff. “Camp is an

immersion in a new world, and focus-

ing on what’s going on back home can

make it harder to just relax and enjoy

it,” says Sarah Baughman, a co-owner

of Camp Carysbrook in Riner, Va. Some

camps allow parents to email camp-

ers, but handwritten letters remain the

norm. Send along some stamped, pre-

addressed envelopes.

6. Can I get financial assis-

tance?

Of the 2,400 ACA-accredited camps

nationwide, 95 percent have some form

of financial aid, often called “camper-

ships.” Most camps also offer flexible

payment options and/or discounts for

early registration and sibling enroll-

ment. Other possibilities include fed-

eral reimbursements and tax credits.

Go to www.campparents.org/affording-

camp for more information.

7. What kind of medical profes-

sionals are on staff?

Overnight camps should have a li-

censed physician or registered nurse

on site at all times, while day camps

should have someone readily on call,

according to ACA standards. All coun-

selors should have first-aid training. If

a child has allergies, needs medication

or has other special needs, make sure a

camp is equipped to handle it.

8. What is a typical daily sched-

ule?

Some camps are more structured

or specialized than others. Direc-

tors can offer more details about

how campers schedule their time.

“Some camps have a very open free

choice philosophy that may give kids

options to do nothing, or to hang out

in the arcade or snack shack instead

of attending activities - which may

not be what the parents feel they are

paying for,” says Diane Tyrrell, pres-

ident of ACA, Virginias.

9. My child is coming to camp

with a friend. Should they be

in the same cabin?

Camps have varying policies, al-

though most will grant requests

for friends to bunk together. Par-

ents should make decisions on a

case-by-case basis, depending on

a particular relationship, camp di-

rectors say. “Sometimes friends do

better if they’re not in the same

cabin but in a cabin next door in-

stead,” Baughman says. “They can

still spend time together during ac-

tivities, but they’ll have a chance to

branch out and form new friend-

ships.”

10. How do you maintain safety

during water activities?

Lifeguards should be on duty for

all swimming or water sports. Kids

also should have to pass a swim test

before going into the deep end of a

pool and wear a well-fitted life jack-

et when they’re at a waterfront area,

on a dock or in a boat.

Calling shy campers! At summer camp, even shy kids can make friends - and keep them for life.

www.MyTidewaterMoms.com | S U M M E R C A M P G U I D E 2 0 11 | 17

Some kids don’t have any trouble making

friends. With enviable confidence, they attract

crowds and entertain them with ease. But the ma-

jority of youngsters worry that they won’t fit in,

that the other kids won’t like them, that they’ll

be lonely at camp.

The good news is that there’s plenty you can do

to help boost your child’s friend-making powers

before he packs for summer camp.

“Parents should encourage their children to

sleep over at a relative’s or friend’s house for the

weekend,” recommends Aimee Jones, assistant di-

rector at Camp Harrison in Boomer, N.C. “Camp-

ers who have experience being away from home

tend to have an easier time adjusting to camp.”

Parents can also prepare children by telling

them what to expect. “Campers tend to be less

anxious if they are familiar with the situation,”

says Jones.

“Set up expectations before arriving at camp

by explaining what will happen when the camper

is dropped off,” suggests Riggins. “Introduce the

camper to responsible staff and let the staff person

take over. Tell the camper that you will write. And

follow through with encouraging notes.”

Adam Boyd, director of camps Merri-Mac and

Timberlake in Black Mountain, N.C., urges par-

ents to “let their campers know that they will not

be pressured to act like someone they are not. It

is when campers feel safe that they are comfort-

able speaking up,” he says.

Staff members are most camps are trained

to spot shy campers and draw them out of their

shells.

“Great camps have a place for all types of

personalities,” says Boyd. “Very shy children,

very outgoing children, very athletic, very loud

— they’re all looking for where they fit in the

group. A great counselor will help a camper find

that place without trying to make them like ev-

ery other camper.”

“Our counselors are trained to engage all camp-

ers in games and activities that will break the ice

and involve all campers,” says Jones. “Especial-

ly shy campers who do not want to participate

will spend some time talking with their counsel-

or and figuring out games or situations that will

help them become more comfortable.”

Often, says Jo Anna Riggins, the program di-

rector at Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center

in Efland, camp staff members recruit help from

experienced campers. The peer interaction helps

The first day of summer camp can be

a scary experience. The combina-

tion of new faces, different scenery

and unfamiliar food is intimidating,

especially to young campers who know they’ll be

sleeping in a strange bed at the end of the day. The

best defense against first-day jitters - for kids of all

ages - is a pal, a buddy, a comrade, or, at the very

least, someone to sit with at dinnertime.

the shy camper feel included and the returning camper

feel helpful. It’s a win-win situation.

Bunny Brown, director Emeritus of Skyland Camp for

Girls in Clyde, N.C., encourages campers to offer friend-

ship in order to receive friendship.

“To have a friend, you must first be a friend,” says

Brown. She offers examples of friendly overtures:

“You can ask a camper to join you in a social endeav-

or. Or complement them in something. Engage them

in friendly conversation. Take their side in an argu-

ment. Make them smile or laugh. Share something

you have and they don’t. Never make another feel in-

ferior. Don’t laugh at or criticize them. Overlook the

weaknesses you may see. Look for the good in each.

Practicing these techniques at camp gives you hab-

its for a good lifetime.”

Brown expects her staff to master these techniques, so

they can attend to shy campers, to campers who aren’t

getting along, and to those who aren’t fitting in well.

It’s not easy for children to leave the comfort and se-

curity of home, friends and family behind when they go

to camp. Armed with a positive attitude, a smile and a

good sense of humor, however, they’ll find friends in

abundance. — CP

don’t tell them they can home home — even though they can“It’s so important that parents avoid making promises to their children that include statements such as ‘just try it for a few days, and if you don’t like it, then you can come home.’ It’s tempting to say this to a nervous child, but saying this really removes their motivation to try to make friends and enjoy their summer experience.” — Missy Cook, marketing director, Broadreach and Academic Treks

“Parents should be supportive and reassuring of their campers, but avoid making promises that they will come and get the campers if they are feeling homesick. The campers need to be reassured that they are going into a safe, fun environment.” — Aimee Jones, assistant director, Camper Harrison

Specialty Summer ABA Camps for children with AUTISM

20 | S U M M E R C A M P G U I D E 2 0 11 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

Among the estimated 12,000

summer camps that will be

offered this year, it’s a safe

bet that you’ll find something for ev-

ery child. That’s because, as the total

number of camps has grown, so has the

number of specialty programs.

According to the American Camping

Association, “Campers can embark on

adventures as varied as learning how

to ride a horse and how to race a car.

If your child has an interest, chances

are, there’s a camp that specializes in

it.” From oceanography programs to

drama workshops, from weight loss

camps to intensive soccer training —

the trend toward specialization in the

summer camp industry has launched

an endless list of opportunities that ap-

peal to kids’ individual interests.

For some parents, this specialization

trend begs the question: How much

specialization is too much?

Not surprisingly, camp directors are

divided on the issue. Those who run tra-

ditional camps caution that specializa-

tion can be stressful and lead to “burn

out.” And those who run specialized

programs argue that their camps of-

fer experiences that kids can’t get any-

where else. By focusing on a single ac-

specialty or traditional?

tivity or adventure, specialty programs

allow campers to immerse themselves

in a particular subject and to surround

themselves with other children who

share their passions.

Clearly, both perspectives have

merit. Bunny Brown, the director

of Skyland Camp for Girls in Clyde,

N.C., says, “Specialty camps have a

definite place in the camping world.

Where would handicapped and dis-

eased kids be without the wonder-

ful camping experiences made possi-

ble for them? On the other end of the

scale, we have computer camps, mu-

sic camps, horse camps, tennis camps,

ball camps of all sorts. They answer a

need for specializing.”

Dean Barley, director of They Vine-

yard Camp & Conference Center in West-

field, N.C., agrees that specialized pro-

grams offer important benefits. “They

allow a camper to hone skills and de-

velop greater abilities rapidly,” he says.

But, he warns, there is a flip-side. “They

limit the camper’s interaction with oth-

er programs, skills and people.”

“The drawback of overspecializing is

burn out,” explains Brown. “Comput-

er drills for technique, piano practice,

horse care, tennis drills and pitching

practice are fun for a while but be-

come a real chore when the excite-

ment wears off.”

So, what’s a parent to do? Ideally,

a compromise can be reached. Says

Brown, “Many lucky campers get to

do both. They specialize for part of the

summer and generalize the rest.”

Adam Boyd, director of Camps Mer-

ri-Mac for Girls and Timberlake for

Boys in Black Mountain, N.C., encour-

ages parents to carefully consider what

they and their child hope to get out of

the camp experience before choosing

a program. .“Most general camps actu-

ally operate 20 or more specialty pro-

grams, so the quality of programs and

instruction is often as outstanding as

a specialty camp,” he says. “The pri-

mary differences are that in a gener-

al camp, a camper will participate for

less time in each activity because she

will be doing other activities as well.

With this in mind, a parent should

choose a specialty camp when their

purpose is for their child to hone skills

in a single activity and a general camp

when they want quality instruction in

a particular activity along with expo-

sure to others.”

Brown offers additional advice: “It

is my thought that these camps — be-

cause of the specialized focus and be-

cause of their costs — perhaps would

be good for shorter sessions and more

often suitable for older (10- to 15-year-

old) prospects.”

In the end, both kinds of camps of-

fer a world of experience and enrich-

ment. Taking into consideration his

interests and attention span, decide

how much specialization is right for

your child and make your summer

plans accordingly.
