CONSTANT SPRING CHRISTIAN SERVICE CAMP

2013

(Online Version)

Welcome Campers! The Directors, Board Members and staff of The Jamaica Christian Mission

welcome you to the Constant Spring Christian Service Camp.

For over 58 years we have been able to carry on these camps for you as a tool to

“get away” and join other young people your age in a fun-filled week.

Here you can participate in Classes, Singspiration, Drama, Sports, Devotions,

Campfires, and much more.

We encourage you to take this time to become a Christian, and we challenge those

who are Christians to become more Christ-like.

We also encourage you to lend a hand of love to those who have travelled from

afar to come to Jamaica and share their lives and testimonies with you. It is our

prayer that lifelong friendships will be made.

May God bless you all through your time at camp, and we hope that you totally

enjoy the Christian fellowship.

Board Members and Staff of Jamaica Christian Mission

Camp Rules (These rules are put in place for your benefit and as guidelines for how we can love our God, our

friends, and ourselves.)

2. Christian conduct and modest behaviour are expected on the camp grounds at all times.

This relates to your dress, actions, speech, and deportment.

The National Anthem

Eternal Father, Bless our land,

Guard us with Your mighty hand

Keep us free from evil powers,

Be our light through countless hours;

To our leaders, Great defender,

Grant true wisdom from above;

Justice, Truth be ours forever,

Jamaica, land we love.

Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love.

Teach us true respect for all,

Stir response to duty’s call;

Strengthen us the weak to cherish,

Give us vision least we perish;

Knowledge send us, Heavenly Father,

Grant true wisdom from above;

Justice, truth, be ours forever,

Jamaica land we love.

Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love.

Pledge to the Bible

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word. I’ll

make it a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path;

It’s words will I hide in my heart that I may not sin against God.

Camp Motto “Study to show yourself approved unto God a workman that need not be ashamed,

rightly dividing the word of truth.”

II Timothy 2:15

Taps

Day is done, gone the sun From the lake, from the hill, from the sky

All is well, safely rest God is nigh

Jesus calls, Jesus calls Calls to you, calls to me, calls to all

Hear His call, hear His plea Follow me

He splashed orange in the sunrise and cast the sky blue.

And if you love to see geese as they gather, chances are you’ll see that, too.

Did he have to make the squirrel’s tail furry? Was he obliged to make the birds sing? And the funny way that chickens scurry or the majesty of thunder when it rings?

What give a flower fragrance? Why give food its taste? Could it be

He loves to see that look upon your face?

STEP UP

Monday: Making Jesus Lord of our Life

Text: 1 Samuel 17: 17-37 When I hear the phrase “step up” it speaks to a desire or a wish to move to the next level whether

it’s in a basketball or a football game, a subject area in the class room or in tackling a challenge

in the arena of life. This desire or wish MUST start from within, because if there is no desire or

need to step up, then the normal course will be continued which eventually keeps us in our

regular routine of comfort and familiarity. You must want it, need it, pursue it.

David a young shepherd boy was delivering food for his brothers: this was just another chore- a

comfortable and familiar task. He was the youngest son of Jesse and by default was given the

simpler chores to attend to because he was deemed unfit for battle by virtue of his small stature

and inexperience in fighting wars as he had no military training.

However when he arrived on the battle field with the goods, he questioned the men and quickly

concluded that the same way that God was able to allow him to step up and defend his sheep in

the wilderness from the lion and the bear, his Lord would be with him in this battle.

Consequently, David shed himself of the king’s amour and challenged Goliath. As a result of

David’s stepping up, David defeated Goliath triumphantly.

When we make Jesus, Lord of our lives and follow His word, there is a renewed approach in

tackling life challenges. Whether you are just a simple common student at school or just a

regular employee at work, making Jesus Lord of our lives can spark a life changing experience.

As we go throughout this week, consider the many opportunities God has provided and will

continue to provide for you to step up and move to the next level and make Him number one.

Sriptural thought: “Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart”

Closing Prayer Song: “I have decided to follow Jesus”.

STEP UP

Tuesday: Step up and be an Example

Text: Daniel 3: 1-18

One of the good things about being in a lost world is there is a lot of opportunities for people like

you to be a good example for others to emulate. An example is defined as a person, action, or thing,

that is worthy of imitation (www.wordreference.com). The other good thing about a lost world is

that there are many people searching for good examples to follow as they try to find themselves and

ascertain their role in society. Since there is so much opportunity in this world for people to become

an example, it is hoped that you would be challenged through the various messages in songs,

lessons, sermons, bible readings, cell meetings and other various activities to step up to be “a

person worthy of imitation.”

In today’s bible story, the Hebrew boys’ defiance to the king’s decree to worship the Golden

image is a good example of how we can step up and do the right thing for God despite the

consequences. Babylon was full of lost people who easily worshiped the golden image as soon as

they heard the music even though it was not right to do so. Due to their defiance and subsequent

victory over the fiery furnace, the king instructed the people to imitate these boys in worshipping

the only true God and then he promoted them so that the people could emulate them (Daniel

3:29-30)

It would have been easy to follow the other people and worship the golden image, but they

would have become lost like the people. However, they chose to be the example. In our lost

world today, you can choose to become lost like the others or to step up like the Hebrew boys

and be that good example. Your stepping up may encourage someone to give their life to the

Lord or even to strengthen his/her walk with Christ just as how Nebuchadnezzar was forced to

declare and decree that God was the only one to be worshipped because of the example these

boys set on that day.

If you are not a Christian accept Christ today even if your friends have said no to Him and be

that good example. For the Christians, keep standing up for God and be a person worthy of

imitation. It is the only sure way of not being lost in a lost world. Step up and be a good example

today! God will promote you.

Memory Verse: Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province

of Babylon. (Daniel 3:30)

STEP UP

Wednesday: Step Up when you are Afraid

Text: Psalm 27:1-5

Everyone experiences fear at some point in his/her life. Some people are afraid of the dark,

ghosts, rats, flying and crawling insects and so on. Of what are you afraid? Do you think God

wants us to live in fear? Definitely Not!

In verse 1 of today’s text, it says that The Lord is my light and my salvation, who shall I fear…”

This verse is reminding us that when we trust God, our Heavenly Father, and allow Him to lead

us we will be able to step up and conquer our fears.

In 1 Samuel 17:45-51, we see David the young shepherd boy as an example of someone who

boldly step up, faced and conquered the greatly feared giant Goliath. Because David trusted in

the Lord, he was able to defeat Goliath (verses 45-47).

Do you want to be able to step up and face your fears? Do you want to overcome your fears? To

do that you must trust in the Lord.

Memory Verse: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of

a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7).

STEP UP

Thursday: Step Away from Temptations

Text: Matt. 4:1-11, Phil 4: 8-9, Gen. 39

Temptation means “Try to persuade or attract” someone into doing something wrong.

Temptation by itself, is not sin, but when you yield or give into it, that is when you have sinned.

In St. Matthew 4 where Jesus was tempted on three counts by the devil but he did not yield. So it

is perfectly possible to step away from temptation.

Here are three ways in which you can step away from temptation:

1. RUN AWAY FROM TEMPTATION: Gen. 39. Joseph, God fearing person, was sold as a slave

into Egypt. He was assigned to work for Potiphar- high government officer. Potiphar’s wife

wanted to go to bed with Joseph although Joseph was not her husband. She tempted him daily,

but he did not yield. One day when she and Joseph were alone and she tried to hold onto him. But

he ran out of the house leaving his coat. Although he was wrongfully imprisoned, the good thing

is that he did not sin. Do not ever try to stand up to sin! Run!

2. STAY FOCUSED ON GODLY VIRTUES: God was always with Joseph because he

stayed focus on Godly virtues. In fact, whatever he did the Lord made it prosper. Joseph knew

that sleeping with Potiphar’s wife was wrong, so he yielded not to sin but stayed focus on his

tasks in the house. (Gen 39:8, 9). We need to be focused on the Godly virtues so that God can be

with us. Attending church, participating in godly youth activities, studying the word, communing

with God, praying and fasting are all important ingredients to help us stay focus and step away

from temptation.

3. COMMIT OUR SELVES TO STAND UP FOR GOD NO MATTER WHAT: Joseph took a

stance for hid God: he said to the woman “How often can I do this great wickedness and sin

against God?” We must take a stance for the God who cares for us, supplies all our needs and

gave us the greatest gift: Jesus. If you have not been handling temptations well, heed to this

devotion and pray the prayer of Jesus: Matt 6:13 “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil.”

Memory verse: “…How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (Gen 39: 9)

STEP UP

Friday: Step to Jesus

Text: Matthew 9:20-22

Stepping to someone can involve a sense of anxiety in an individual even in our culture. In some

aspects of our culture, stepping to someone means you are going to approach that person

menacingly to inflict injury to him/her. But in today’s bible reading, stepping to someone like

Jesus can bring about a much needed change in your circumstances that can improve the quality

of your life.

This woman with the issue of blood was suffering from this disease for 12 years. She perhaps

spent a lot of money at the doctors, and she was undoubtedly also very unhappy and lived very

uncomfortably. But she decided to step to Jesus to seek a change in her life by getting that much

needed breakthrough for her situation. She just wanted to touch the helm of his garments. She

decided to press through the crowd; consequently, she received her healing. If we do not step to

Jesus like this woman, most of our undesirable circumstances and situations will remain with us

without any meaningful change. The story says that Jesus was on his way to the ruler’s house to

heal the man’s dead daughter, but because of this woman’s persistence to step to him, he

detoured to accommodate her.

If we do not decide to step to Jesus in spite of the challenges and even the obstacles in our way

we, unlike this woman, will not receive the change we want in our lives. Do you want to be a

better person? Do you want to overcome that situation that bothers you so much that sometimes

you cannot even sleep? Are you suffering from a situation for 1 day or even 12 years? Do you

just want to be a better person living a life pleasing to God? Then step to Jesus; today is the

perfect day to make that step. Jesus will make time for you. As the baptismal service is

scheduled for today, take this opportunity to press through your problems and circumstances to

step to Jesus. You may just receive that healing for which you are longing.

Memory Verse For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole

(Matthew 9:21)

STEP UP

Saturday- Step Out and Tell Others about Jesus

Text: 1 Samuel 17

Leaving camp you may ask yourselves significant questions like; “This past week, what was I

most focus on, was God's purpose evident in my reflections, devotions and attitude? The things I

learnt, are they enabling factors that will cause me to change my ways to do God's will? The

fellowship I shared, was it beneficial enough for me to develop and maintain good, pure and

meaningful relationships; with God, family, neighbours and friends? Am I now stepping out from

camp with the joy, excitement and awareness like the "Woman of Samaria/ at the well" (Jn. 4),

being able to invite others to camp but more so to Christ? YES! Now that I have to step out of

camp, I will step out in god's power as only in Christ "we live and move and have our being"

(Acts 17: 28). Like David I can now tackle my giants (text).

Step out with confidence. Robbie a little boy is very afraid of the dark and dark places. He was

playing with his ball when it bounced away from him down the stairs and into the basement of

their home. He stood at the top of the stairs looking down the flight of steps and into the darkened

space. His mother aware of what happened said to him, "Robbie, my son, there is nothing down

there to harm you and Jesus will go with you." Robbie braced himself, squared his shoulders went

and retrieve his ball. You can step out in confidence because Jesus goes with you! (1Sam.17: 34).

Step out with courage. It is almost like clockwork that to every great moments of enthusiasm and

praise comes a discouraging factor. Think it not strange that your week of camp may be followed

by such but do not be discourage because God is with you! Think about the times you conquered

your fears, you stood for peace, stood your grounds for that which is right, spoke the truth although

you were punished and refused to be a part of an unruly group. Just like you, David was

discouraged but he kept reflecting on the positive (1Sam. 17: 37).

Step out in purpose. To step out in purpose you must step to Christ for Him to prepare you so

you may step out strong and determined now being able to change home, church, community and

country. Go on! Step out and God go with you!!!
