Jirapats cast o ethnocentric characters still predominantly source rom the great mythological narratives o the
Ramakien, the Thai adaptation o the 2,000 year-old Indian Hindu Epic the Ramanyana. Shrouded in a Warhol
camouage pattern, the literary classics primary antagonist, the demon king Thotsakan, provides one o the
exhibitions most visually dynamic works. Known or his arsenal o weaponry, the ten-aced monster is symbolic to
the nations recent conict, with urther implications to the destabilising inuence o Thailands armed orces upon
the countrys political landscape.
Witty in its play with pictorial depth is Jirapats interpretation o Piet Mondrians 20th century at linear abstractions.
A simple yet efective illusionary conversion rom a two-to-three dimensional composition, the wild and mischievous
monkey god Hanuman stares out caged within Mondrians disciplined order and stability, a metaphor or breaking
ree rom the repressive rigidity o Thailands social hierarchy.
Beyond the Ramakien, other reinterpretations specic to his social allegories include the class conscious Black
and White (ater Kara Walker), in which the American artists black silhouettes to racial and gender identity are
permeated by a dark-skinned gure clad in traditional Thai regalia. The artists visualisation pertains to Thailands
southern ethnic minority, the orest dwelling ngoh, who are largely marginalised and looked down upon by ethnic
Thais. Jirapat appropriates Walkers stereotyped racial caricatures as analogies to the recent street protests being
conveniently blamed upon disparages o class.
Accessible to the average viewer, Jirapats Pop-style paintings resonate with the Thai psyche, where appropriation
and reinvention are readily assimilated. Emanating rom a country that wantonly devours all things Western yet is
vehemently protective o its own traditional heritage, Jirapats art conveys some o the socio-political dilemmasembroiling his contemporary countrymen.
