1 Dear CAMMACers, Welcome back to another season of CAMMAC activities. I hope your summer was enjoyable and included many musical events, maybe even a week at one of the CAMMAC camps. I was lucky to hear Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Purcell’s Fairy Queen in very good live performances: How about that for the anniversary year for both composers! I attended the classical choral week at Lake Mac: Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzer was our main work. It was very enjoyable, with some parts of it challenging. I liked the courses I took (different choirs, vocal training, Latin dance). Some were not just fun but very useful. But let’s concentrate on the Toronto Region. Look at the line-up of Readings and Workshops that your Committee has planned for you on page 2. We hope you agree that they look exciting both because of the pieces and the conductors. I think Robert Cooper is joining us for the first time, as are Charles Demuynck, William Shookhoff, Alan Gasser, Mark Vuorinen, and Errol Gay. Lydia Adams and Howard Dyck are always more than welcome to lead us. Elijah reminds us that it is the anniversary of Mendelssohn this year. I will no longer point out my favourite Readings during the most recent season and the most anticipated ones in the coming season. It is too hard to choose! To help in getting more instrumentalists, we included the instrumentation of all the pieces of the season in this issue of the newsletter. You will find this on page 4. Please sign up early to help with the organization of the readings and keep this newsletter for later reference. The two-part chamber music is back by popular request. We also thought that it was time again for instrumental jazz and for flute workshops. Bruce Redstone and Leonie Wall are favoured leaders for our membership. Please be aware of the new location and time for the instrumental jazz and the sight-singing workshops. As many of you were not present at our AGM, we have included the minutes on page 7 of this newsletter. The list of committee members given on page 6 reflects the committee’s decision on the distribution of roles. You should also know that Nacia Miller answered our call for volunteer webmaster and we even have two back-up volunteers. We also got volunteers for newsletter mailing and proof-reading. Thanks to all who volunteered! Please let us know if you can help at the Readings (music distribution and collection, refreshments, and registering people in). Finally, we are looking for new people to join our committee beginning June 2010. Three committee members agreed to stay on for another year (Ricci, Gerald, Kathy). Next year two more from the committee complete their 6-year terms given as maximum in our by-laws. We hope that some of you will start considering this prospect now. We need your skills, fresh ideas, and energy. Let us know what position you would like to volunteer for and we’ll start teaching you the ropes now. We hope that you will attend many of our Readings and Workshops. See you there! September 2009 News & Information Hotline: 416-421-0779 (24 hours) Web: www.cammac.ca email: [email protected]

Ruth had a long life which included many and varied interests - music being but one She was the consummate volunteer In almost from the beginning of CAMMAC Southern Ontario region (now Toronto) she took over for a year as Administrator from the founder of our first Ontario Music Camp having spent several weekends touring Ontario looking for an appropriate site she served on the local (acting as President Co-President and folder of the Newsletter) and National Boards she supported many CAMMAC special occasions offering accommodation sustenance or whatever was needed

She attended the camp at Lake MacDonald and wherever the Ontario camp was situated she either attended or visited from its beginnings in Lake Rosseau to its present location in Lakefield

Ruth loved to sing and to celebrate her 70th birthday gave a recital at the Heliconian Club in Toronto She was an ardent supporter of the Toronto Chamber Choir Tafelmusik Toronto Consort among others

In her home during her final illness she was cared for round-the-clock by dedicated friends including Nora Mular-Richards a longstanding CAMMAC member until the time came to move into the Grace Hospital where she died peacefully on May 21st

On May 29th a Service of Thankskgiving for her life was held at Bloor Street United Church where she served as an elder and which was attended by CAMMAC members from both Toronto and Ottawa regions
