CAMINO INGLÉS - A PILGRIMAGE FROM FERROL TO SANTIAGO

In the middle ages, the news of the Camino de Santiago spread all over Europe and Pilgrims from

the UK and Ireland would sail down to A Coruña and Ferrol to start their pilgrimage to Santiago.

Today we only use the route from Ferrol as it is over the 100km needed to gain your Compostela.

The Camino Inglés is one of several walks to Santiago, but this is the only one to start off at the coast,

which means the first couple of days walking are rewarded with wild coastal scenery before delving into

the heart of the Galician countryside for the remainder of your pilgrimage to Santiago.

At the start of the walk in Ferrol, it is tradition to pick a set of steps leading up from the various jetties to

start your walk, emulating the way the pilgrims would have arrived in the middle ages. From here you

stroll along quiet, golden beaches and along pristine clifftops, past monasteries and churches. As you

begin to climb you will get some stunning views of the surrounding towns and the beautiful Rias de

Betanzos wetlands.

The path then turns inland, through the rural farmlands of Galicia and gives you the chance to really enjoy

this region of Spain, it’s people and cuisine. After passing the peak at Bruma-Meson do Vento it is

downhill most of the way into Santiago. Just before you enter the city, you pass an abandoned hill fort

where you can add your pebble to the pile, leaving all of the worries that you brought on the trip behind

with it.

We offer the Camino Ingés over 5 walking days and our Camino packages include pre-booked

accommodation in comfortable hotels and guesthouses, a detailed guidebook and maps, a comprehensive

information pack and emergency support from our local representatives. Baggage transfer is also

available as an option if you would prefer not to walk with a heavy bag.

HIGHLIGHTS Is the Camino Inglés For Me?

The Camino Inglés is a fantastic

alternative walk into Santiago. If you

want to gain your Compostela

certificate away from the crowds on

the Camino Frances, then this

beautiful trip through rural Galicia is

the one for you.

Page 2: CAMINO INGLÉS - A PILGRIMAGE FROM FERROL TO …In the middle ages, the news of the Camino de Santiago spread all over Europe and Pilgrims from the UK and Ireland would sail down to

THE CAMINO INGLÉS

At 116km, the Camino Inglés from Ferrol to

Santiago de Compostela is over the stated limit

to gain your Compostela certificate at the

Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago. A mix of coastal

and rural scenery, this is a beautiful alternative

walk into Santiago.

FERROL TO SANTIAGO DECOMPOSTELA

Walking Days: 5Nights: 6Average Daily Distance: 23kmGrade: Moderate

DAY 1

Arrive Ferrol

You can fly into Santiago de Compostela or La

Coruna from several points in Europe. From

either of these points there are several buses a

day to get you up to Ferrol.

Ferrol is full of history, with an abundance of

prehistoric findings, right up to its use as a naval

stronghold in various wars. The architecture

reflects this depth of history and the city centre is

a delight to wander around. Add to this the

excellent seafood and friendly locals and you

have one of Spain’s hidden gems.

DAY 2

Ferrol to Pontedeume

The first stage of this trip is a reasonably flat day,

so don't be put off by the 31km distance. You

exit the city of Ferrol past the 8th Century

Monastery of San Martino de Xubio. You then

take in some clifftop walking and some beautiful

beaches before arriving into Pontedeume.

There is the option of a transfer to eliminate the

first 8km, walking out of Ferrol. This transfer is

free of charge if you are using the baggage

transfer service.

Walk: 31km 250m ascent, 210m descent.

DAY 3

Pontedeume to Betanzos

The route rises up out of Pontedeume, giving you

spectacular view back over Ferrol. You are then

walking along the wild Galician coast which the

route shares with the Camino Real path.

You will eventually come to the wide estuary of

the Rio Lambre which gives you great views over

the Rias de Betanzos and surrounding wetlands.

Your overnight stop in Betanzos has some of the

most interesting architecture in Galicia.

Walk: 21km 300m ascent, 200m descent.

DAY 4

Betanzos to San Paio de Buscás

We start off today’s walk by collecting you and

transferring you to Vilacoba, to shorten what

would otherwise be a tough days walk.

Today you leave the coastal walking behind and

head inland, across agricultural land and walking

uphill for most of the day. Your overnight stop is

beside the abandoned Hermitage of San Paio.

Walk: 26km, 360m ascent

DAY 5

San Paio de Buscás to Marantes

After you reach Bruma-Meson do Vento, the rest

of your trip to Santiago is mainly downhill.

Today’s walk is through some of the greenest

landscapes in Spain, though be warned, the

green does not appear by magic, so if you are

walking outside of the summer months, rain wear

is recommended.

Your walk down into the delightful town of

Marantes brings the penultimate stage of the

Camino Inglés to an end.

Walk: 26km, 200m descent.

DAY 6

Marantes to Santiago deCompostela

Your first port of call on leaving Marantes will be

the town of Siguero. From here you will cross

the river and into the Municipality of Santiago.

You will soon reach Meixonfrio which is an old

pilgrim resting point, before reaching the pre-

Roman hill fort, where it is tradition to leave a

pebble.

This makes for a fitting gesture before you

undertake the walk into the glorious city of

Santiago where your walk comes to an end in the

shadow of the grand Cathedral.

As the days walk is quite short, you can leave

early in order to walk into Santiago to meet the

midday mass in the Cathedral, which welcomes

new pilgrims into the city. Should you feel that

you will miss this, we always recommend an

extra night in order to attend.

Walk: 12km, 220m ascent, 50m descent.
