Semi-annual club dues of $60 are due by the end of March! If you haven’t already done so, please send your check, payable to “Diablo Toastmas-ters,” to our club Treasurer Irving Joe at 722 Hid-den Lakes Drive, Martinez Ca 94553. Thanks!
AREA B-6 SPEECH CONTEST
Next up on the Spring 2017 speech contest list
of events is the Area B-6 Table Topics and In-
ternational Speech Contest. This event will be
held from 7 to 9 P.M. on Thursday, March 9th
at Denny’s, with Diablo 598 being the host for
the event! This will be in lieu of our regular
meeting which would normally be scheduled
that evening, so there’s no reason not to have a
good turnout from our club members! Come on
out and support your fellow members John Pe-
terson and Camille Miller (see story at left)!
DIVISION B SPEECH CONTEST
Winners from the Area B-6 contest will go on to
compete in the Division B event, at a location
and date as yet to be announced. In the event
that one (or two?) of our representatives qualify
for this contest we may cancel our regular
meeting so we can all turn out to root for our
team — so stay tuned!!
This year’s Spring “Table Topics and Internation-
al Speech” contest was not as tight as usual,
due to the unavoidable absence of a key com-
petitor and an unusu-
al dearth of partici-
pants! The two win-
ners, pictured at left,
were long-time mem-
ber John Peterson
and newby Camille
Miller. Camille emerged victorious in the Table
Topics event with a close win over fellow con-
testant Barbara Hughes, while John won the
Speech contest with his old standby ‘Hurly-
Burly.” Regrettably absent due to an out-of-state
work commitment was Ashley Harkness, the tra-
ditional winner of the Speech event. Regrettable
also was the lack of additional contestants!
Come on, members! We need your participation
in future events if Diablo 598 is to remain the
force it usually is in District 57 speech contests!!

Take Club Speech Awards
Welcome to our new members:
Rose Falgout, Chuck Plummer
Please support Rose and Chuck in every
way you can on their Toastmasters journey!
As of the end of last month, Diablo 598 was on
track to achieve the coveted “President’s Distin-
guished Club” status in Toastmasters Interna-
tional’s Distinguished Club Program (DCP). Thus
far, since the beginning of the “Toastmasters Year”
on July 1st, the club has obtained six of the 10
goals defined in the Program. This in turn qualifies
us already as a “Distinguished Club.”
If we can achieve just one more, we’ll be a “Select
Distinguished Club,” and if we make it to 9 out of
the 10 goals we’ll once again be anointed as a
“President’s Distinguished Club!”
The six goals achieved thus far are:
Completed two Competent Communicator man-
uals
Achieved one Advanced Communicator status
Achieved one Competent Leader (CL) status
Achieved a second CL status
Recruited four new members (five, actually)
Submitted one officer list and one dues renewal
report to International headquarters on time
If by June 30th we can either — (1) complete two
more CC manuals, or (2) achieve one more Ad-
vanced Communicator status, or (3) recruit three
more new members, we can reach the seven-goal
requirement for Select Distinguished Club. WE
CAN DO THIS!
Every member needs now to dig in and do your
part, by (1) bringing friends to our club and encour-
aging them to join; (2) attending the Chamber of
Commerce “Yo-Pro’s” events and encouraging
folks you meet there to visit us and see for them-
selves what we can do to accelerate their career
advancement, and (3) going to work on your Com-
munication manuals and get one done!
And, if we can knock off all of those goals still out
there, on June 30th Diablo 598 will get yet another
President’s Distinguished Club ribbon! YEAH!!

CINDY’S COLUMN
By Cindy Johnson
Happy spring! Hopefully the bulk of the rain
is behind us and the nice weather will encour-
age more of our members to come to our
weekly meetings. Members get the most out
of Toastmasters when they attend the meet-
ings on a regular basis.
It’s also time for our semi-annual dues. The
$60 fee needs to be paid by the end of
March. Please coordinate your payment with
our Treasurer Irving Joe. Also, please re-
member we are a supper club and have a
commitment to Denny’s to purchase $100’s
worth of food. Any shortcomings have to be
made up by the club. Our current club dues
of $2.50 per month do not allow us to cover
this deficit. We will need to raise our club
dues next October if we continue to fall short
of our requirements. So, please plan to eat
dinner on Thursdays at Denny’s if you can!
I hope all of you have had an opportunity to
start exploring the Pathways training on the
Toastmaster web site. There is a lot of excel-
lent information available to you there. I have
only started to scratch the surface of the doc-
umentation available, and I am impressed
with what is there.
Another thing for you to start thinking about
is what club leadership roles you are willing
to undertake. In the next month or so we will
want to start looking at who will be filling our
slate of officer this summer. The club is in
need of people to step up into various roles,
so please talk to me or any other officer if
you’re willing to help the club out!
