Dear Parents/ Carers I am delighted to present our latest Newsletter from here at such a busy Greenside Film factory. We are still challenging each other with our ‘Big Questions’ and trying to develop our critical thinking skills across our STAR Days. I hope some of you tried the ‘Thunks’ in the last Newsletter – I have had lots of interesting conversations with students about their ideas. We have begun to curate our Photographic Exhibition and it has been a joy to see our students in all year groups taking photographs with such interesting view points – do check out the updates below for our Crew Leaders. 1. Y6 Information Hour Thank you to the Y6 Parents/ carers who attended our Information Hour last Thursday evening. We were able to share all the updated information about the Tests and Teacher Assessments coming up over the next few months; including an update on the KS2 tests themselves. Robin Yeats has also put the latest Y6 Spelling list on the website (the test spellings will come from this list). May we urge our Y6 Parents/ carers to keep in close contact with us at this point so that together we can support your daughter/ son in the very best way possible? 2. Introducing Claire Davis Many of you have now met Claire Davis, our new KS2 Teacher, who is working with Y6 this term. Hello Greenside! My name is Claire Davis and I am very pleased to have become a part of the wonderful Greenside School community. For the past five years, I have been the classroom teacher at Riddells Creek Primary School, which is a beautiful primary school 45 minutes north of Melbourne, Australia. I have taught years 3,4,5,6 and physical education, so it is fantastic to be able to work again in the Y6 classroom. I am really looking forward to working with Greenside and meeting all the lovely families. If you see me, please pop in and say hello! Claire 3. Y2 Information Hour This week we ran a similar information session for our Y2 families. We hope those who attended found it useful to find out a little more about the process and the standards expected for each of our Y2 students to aspire to and work towards this term. We sent all families an e-mail with sample papers and exemplification writing – you will see the tests are tough! Please check in with Ms. Webber if you have any further questions. 4. Lost Property May I remind our parents/ carers to label all uniform items with your daughter/ son’s name. Of course this is an obvious point to make but we have, literally, boxes of uniform left unclaimed each term with no name. We will be placing all the current items left out in the playground in the next couple of weeks for everyone to claim. 5. PSA – Tea & Cakes and Quiz Night Thank you to the PSA for organizing a splendid extra-special World Book Day Tea & Cakes – it’s always great to have you all involved in our Greenside ventures. To all the parents/ carers out there – don’t forget we have our big ‘Quiz Night’ this evening (Friday) – do come along and join a Team! 6. Elgin Centre Visit Ms. Webber reports: “As part of our Student Vice & Charity initiatives, the students from our Food Team decided it would be lovely to share some cakes with the elderly members of our community over at the Elgin Centre. So last week, with help from our Chef Sofia, a group of our students prepared jam and coconut sponge cakes and headed off to the centre. The residents over at the Elgin Centre were delighted to share a chat and a slice of cake with us. This was a fabulous experience for all of us. A big thank you to Rafe in Nursery for suggesting the idea and well done to all our students who made this such a big success”. We would like to add our thanks to Sofia and Ms. Webber too! 7. Student Voice Action! Last week Aurelia, Ritaj, Sophie and Una – four of our Y1 girls came to talk to me about a Student Voice proposal. They were suggesting that we designed and had made Greenside Back-packs. They wanted these to replace our Book Bags on the grounds that they are easier to look after (“we won’t lose them because they will be on our backs” they told me) they would be healthier to carry and very useful for trips. We put this request to our uniform suppliers who sent a mock up of 2 different sized Back-packs (seen in the photograph here). The next stage is for the girls to get costings from the company with our logo and then to share with students and parents/ carers. Thanks you to these students for such a fab idea! 8. International Women’s Day On Monday 6th March our girls and female members of staff celebrated International Women’s Day and the idea of being ‘Bold to Make Changes’. We were so lucky to have some of our Mothers and other female relatives join us for the event and we shared stories, allowed ourselves time to remember how great it is to be female and we thought about how bold our girls will be as they grow up and create positive change to make the world an even more amazing and wonderful place. 9. People who help us in EYFS Earlier this week, Emma came to speak to the Reception and Nursery classes about her amazing job- a radiographer! We learnt that Emma does a really important job helping people who might be poorly. We learnt that Emma works in a hospital and uses lots of different machines to take different kinds of pictures of the body, like x-rays, MRI's and CT scans. These pictures then help to show exactly what is wrong with a patient, so that doctors can think of what to do next. Emma showed us pictures and answered all our questions and we were all so inspired by her. Thank you so much Emma for coming to talk to us and share your job with us- we knew that you did a special job being Jake and Hannah's mummy, but now we know you do another amazing job too! 10. Link and Learn with EYFS at Greenside EYFS Maths Link and Learn morning: on Tuesday 14th of March next week, EYFS parents/ carers are invited to come and watch their daughter/ son in action as they learn and explore concepts in Maths. This is a great opportunity for parents/ carers to see how we approach the teaching of Maths, and how you can better help them at home. If you are able to come, please email Ms. Buchanan or Ms. Morra to confirm your attendance. 11. World Book Day We enjoyed another celebration on Thursday 2nd March as each of our classes enjoyed the poetry that arose from their film screenplays and their novels that they are studying in class. During the morning they wrote poetry and made some symbolic accessories to represent their texts and we all got together to share the moment! We marveled at the Reception Ducks, Y4 skipped in as Dogs with Clocks and Y6 represented the planets, NASA and went on their very own 2001 A Space Odyssey. There was a golden

moment witnessed by our parents/ carers as Ben Johnson and Robin Yeats had a Dance Competition. We all marveled at their talent and in the end we declared a tie! We hope you enjoy the reports from our students and Teachers a) In honour of World Book Day, Reception explored the story Farmer Duck in which a hardworking duck had the bad luck of living with a lazy farmer. While the duck tended to the farm, the lazy farmer remained in bed eating chocolates and reading the newspaper... until one day the farm animals decided to take action! The students really enjoyed the story and making duck hats to wear to our World Book Day themed extra-ordinary Board Meeting. b) Y1 students had a fantastic day exploring Doctor Dolittle. We wrote acrostic poems about some of the animals found in the story and made fantastic animal and Doctor Dolittle costumes for our World Book Day parade. c) Y2 explored The Lorax on World Book Day. In the morning we wrote poems with similes inspired by the setting for the book. We also wrote three verse poems and acrostic poems using the word Thneedville. After lunch we all made Lorax masks, mustache necklaces and bonnets inspired by the Truffala trees and the singing fish ponds for the parade. We all loved it and we all love the Lorax! By Mary Y2 d) On World Book Day, Y4 delved into the weird and wonderful world of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster. As well as reading extracts, the students created 'cut up' poems using the words from Chapter 3 and designed costumes for everyone to take on the character of Tock, the wise watchdog with a clock in his tummy! We also created 'found poems' using pages from Pride & Prejudice. A found poem is made by taking words and phrases from a book and re-framing those words as poetry. Here is a selection of the poems Y4 'found' in Jane Austen's classic novel.

e) Y5 went techno-crazy during World Book Day. They wrote Found poetry and Artificial Intelligence synthesized, we created poems inspired by Robotics manuals:

f) For world book day this year, Y6 started the day with us all coming together to making our own brilliant costumes that would blow away the audience in the afternoon. We made: planets, astronaut suits, hats, badges and NASA logos. Then we did something really out of this world! We watched the last 23 minutes of our film - 2001: A Space Odyssey, but with the Pink Floyd album 'Echos' played over the top instead of the sound track. It matches perfectly. You'd never know it wasn't the original and is very spacey. We floated around the classroom like astronauts, trying to imagine what was beyond the stars. This inspired us to write poems together in groups while we were wearing our costumes. It was a great day! From Muhiadin -

12. Green-House Crews We are all looking forward to sharing our TED Talks and Photographic Exhibition with you all during the evening of Tuesday 28

th March. Our Crew Leaders have written the following ‘trailers’ to give you a little

taster of what will be on show that day. a) Crew 1 Mr Yeats tells us: “Crew 1 has been changing the world at every opportunity through the power of speech by our Crew Days. We have finished filming all of our TED talks and have been blown away by the pas-sion and insight the students from all age phases have been able to apply to this challenge. Particularly impressive was how confident Crew 1 were at standing on stage, in front of an audience to be filmed de-liver their TED Talk - not easy! Crew one have now turned their attention to photography and........wow! In only a few sessions they have produced some stunning photos that show a real consideration of composition and thought. The students have come up with the exhibition title of: My Community through My Lens. So far we have been out and about around Shepherds Bush taking photos of things that reflect their community and their day-to-day lives. As well as a great eye for the shot, the students have also shown great analytical skills when exploring some of the world's most famous and iconic photographs and looked at the work of English artist and photographer, David Hockney. This is one exhibition you do not want to miss - watch this space!” b) Crew 2 Ms. Webber declares: “We have taken our art theme one step further this term as we discover how are meets science in the form of photography. We have been exploring a range of different photographic techniques including the rule of thirds, filling the frame and false perspective. We are capturing nature for our contribution to the exhibition and so we will be taking and editing a range of different images using the new techniques we have learnt. We are also considering the four strands that we explored through our TED talk - art as something that makes you happy, makes you think, makes you feel better and has a purpose, through the medium of photography. This is a very exciting term for us and we are looking forward to unveiling our images to you soon. c) Crew 3 Ms. Medcalf tells us: “We have finished writing our Ted Talks on happiness and are looking at happiness first hand through photography. We are investigating what is in a smile and capturing those moments. We can't wait to share our happiness with everyone during our exhibi-tion:. d) Crew 4 Mr. Johnson reveals: “ Crew 4 has been exploring ideas of fairness and unfairness through photography. We have had a wonderful time composing photo stories based on our big ideas (refugees, global warm-ing, stop the war) and have been manipulating our photos through Photoshop, collage, paint and mixed media to create some really exciting expressions of our chosen themes. Aurelia and Amir have been particularly bold in their artistic endeavours, well done!”. e) Crew 5 Ms. Vandepas proudly says: “Crew 5 is having a great time looking at what makes our life 'good'. Through the game 'Would You Rather', which we play at the beginning of every crew day, we have come to realize that a good life means different things to different people. We look forward to showing everyone how we make our life 'good' as well as the lives of others around us. Here is a sneak peek of some of the amazing artwork you will see at the exhibition”.

12. Charity & Celebration – Parents/ Carers – can you help? A message from our Y6 Head Girl & Boy Team “Dear Parents/ Carers We want to tell you about our Sponsor day coming up on Friday 24th March. We want all the Greenside students to join us in an afternoon of fun sponsored events. We will be having a sponsored read, a walk, a football game and other fun events. We hope everyone will raise a minimum of £5 for our Charity project. We will be giving more information to each class next week. We would also like to ask if any of you could ask your work places and companies to see if they would be prepared to sponsor Greenside that afternoon: if they could sponsor us for £5 or £10 that would be amazing and incredible. We can send a letter to them if they would like to find out more – please e-mail Ms. Bastick-Styles as we meet her each week for a Head Girl and Boy Meeting. Thank you all lots for your help. Aisha, Anastasia, Clemency, Degsan, Hick, Mohammed, Nimo, Rex, Sawsan and Zak”. 13. Swimming Gala Mr. Fazzone reports: “This year’s swimming gala was another fun and competitive event. Greenside had four swimmers who made it into the finals after the round of close and competitive heats. Rex, Iris, Nancy and Amber represented the Greenside in the finals. Rex took home 2 gold medals, one of which was the 2 length freestyle and left the other swimmers trailing by over 10 seconds! Even though the girls only just missed out on a medal position, their effort was second to none, and this bodes well for next year when they move into Y6. Next year they all can achieve a medal! Well-done Greenside!” 14. 100% Attendance day and Class Photographs A quick reminder to all our families that next Monday (13th March) is our next 100% Attendance Day. On our last identified day we came so close to our target. Please can we ask that everyone supports our target for next week? We will also have the Photographer at Greenside to take Class Photographs that day so a double reason to be here! 15. Community Food Day An invitation from Ms. Webber and our Eco- Food Student Leaders: “The Greenside Food Experience -Community Cooking Day will take place on Wednesday 22nd March. Please join us for a fabulous lunch planned and cooked by our North & East African Community. There will be delicious food and great music to get us all in the mood.
