Camera Shot Research Having decided upon our chose genre and song, we have began to research into music video, looking particularly at different aspects of the videos that we can look to for inspiration for our video. Looking extensively at videos from the Indie/Alternative genre, we have noted characteristics of these videos of the particular genre and will look at these to create a storyboard for our video. However, we have also looked at all genres for inspiration and a variety of shots. Firstly, we looked at close ups, a shot that can be found universal across all genres. Close ups of the face, instruments or other parts of the video  these shots are used in performance based videos as well as narrative and concept based videos. Below are a number of examples taken from videos by the bands Two Door Cinema Club, We Have Band and Foals who all fit into the genre we have chosen to use, as well as an example of an effective shot from  A$AP Fergs single ‘Shabb a’ a 2013 Hip Hop/ Rap single. All of these shots play on the notion of looking, and allow the audience to connect with the artist shown in the video. The focus in these shots is the artist themselves, whether it be whilst they are performing like Yannis in the Foals screenshot, or part of a concept video like the Two Door example. There are also close ups and extreme close ups of instruments commonly throughout these kind of videos. These are used to show lip syncing, which we will most certainly used in important parts of the lyrics or song. Two Door Cinema Club We Have Band

Camera Shot Research

Having decided upon our chose genre and song, we have began to researchinto music video, looking particularly at different aspects of the videos that we

can look to for inspiration for our video. Looking extensively at videos from theIndie/Alternative genre, we have noted characteristics of these videos of theparticular genre and will look at these to create a storyboard for our video. However, we have also looked at all genres for inspiration and a variety of shots.

Firstly, we looked at close ups, a shot that can be found universal across allgenres. Close ups of the face, instruments or other parts of the video – theseshots are used in performance based videos as well as narrative and conceptbased videos. Below are a number of examples taken from videos by thebands Two Door Cinema Club, We Have Band and Foals who all fit into the

genre we have chosen to use, as well as an example of an effective shot from A$AP Fergs single ‘Shabba’ a 2013 Hip Hop/ Rap single. All of these shotsplay on the notion of looking, and allow the audience to connect with the artistshown in the video. The focus in these shots is the artist themselves, whether it be whilst they are performing like Yannis in the Foals screenshot, or part of a concept video like the Two Door example. There are also close ups andextreme close ups of instruments commonly throughout these kind of videos. These are used to show lip syncing, which we will most certainly used inimportant parts of the lyrics or song.

Another shot that is common within videos of the same genre is a mid-shot,that reveals more of the mise-en-scene and the artist that is in focus, as themain focal point of indie/alternative rock videos is the artist themselves. Theexample below commonly shows the artists mid rift and face, and if they playan instrument it too can be shown through this kind of shot. These areeffective shots as it allows the audience a greater insight into the video as a

whole, whether it be performance or concept based as there is more exposureof the artist and their surroundings.

Another example is long shots, used to show the whole band and the majorityof their background. These shots are used commonly to show a performanceelement to a video of the band in their entirety or a specific scene in a conceptor narrative video. As we are planning a mostly performance based video, wewill be looking to include these kinds of camera shots to show our bandperforming, so that it is clear to the audience the use of the instruments andthat the singer is being vocal. Note the capture from Foals’ Inhaler video, theuse of a long shot/ over the shoulder shot is used, and something we feel isparticularly effective as it shows the band from a different perspective that youmay be use too.
