Boom Shot Crane Shot

This is when the camera moves up or down, as if it were on a physical crane. The same considerations for panning and tilting apply for crane shots.

Boom shots allow for a range of height in shots and allows for swooping into a subject for effect in smooth change of camera heights The ending of many films is done with a Boom Shot that pulls away from the action of the film.

Camera Movement

Searching CraneAs a character onscreen searches for something, the camera slowly cranes upward, gradually revealing the magnitude of the search.

In The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, the camera cranes back slightly to reveal the extent of a graveyard that must be searched to find the gold. Labyrinth uses a Searching Crane as Sarah searches through the labyrinth.

Camera Movement Dolly Shot

A dolly is a small wheeled vehicle, piloted by a dolly grip, who moves a camera around in a scene.

A dolly shot is a move in and out of a scene or a subject.

Expand Dolly

With Expand Dolly, the camera follows an actor who is moving away. As

the camera moves forward, the actor walks faster than the camera – distancing himself from

the audience

Expand Dolly adds finality to a scene, is is a

nice setup for a transition or a fade.

Camera Movement

Panning

Panning  is used to follow a moving object or character, or to show more than can fit into a single frame, such as panning across a landscape.  The camera is stationary and rotates in a horizontal plane.

Whip PanThe Whip Pan is the act of panning the camera very rapidly from one subject to another, frequently blurring the images in between the subjects.

Used frequently in the more frenetic class of cartoon, in which it is exclusively referred to as "zip pan."

Camera Movement Tilting

The camera is stationary and rotates in a vertical plane. Tilting is most often used in mystery or suspense type stories.

Camera Movement Tracking

ShotA tracking shot is a movement perpendicular to the camera lens axis.

When the camera physically moves along a track in order to follow an action or reveal a scene.

Track Through SolidTo create this effect, an object is cut open so that the camera can pan, tilt, or move in front of the cutaway portion. When this technique is used, it seems as if the camera has accomplished something impossible, but it is actually a rather straight forward visual trick.

In Blade Runner When Deckard enters the building the camera cranes down “through the roof of the police office.”
