1 The Cambridge Executive MBA is a

unique 20 month degree programmefor senior executives. Delivered over 16

    weekends and four week-long blocks,

the programme is attended by people

from all over the world and enables

participants to continue working whilstearning a Cambridge degree.

     The University of Cambridge has

    created this programme because

we believe that whilst business andmanagement education for junior and

middle managers is generally very good,

    senior executives (including company

    owners, partners and directors) have

not traditionally been well served. TheCambridge Executive MBA has been

carefully designed to develop the hard

and soft skills, and provide the practical,

    relevant knowledge necessary for senior

    executives responsible for leading their

    organisations.

    “[The programme] gave me

    a framework within which

    I could understand the

challenges that were facingthe Foundation, particularly

    around marketing, scaling

    and working capital flow.

     At both Broadcom and

    the Foundation, the EMBA

    gave me more confidence

in negotiations, andhelped me think creatively

    in terms of structuring

    business deals.”

    3Programme objective and course structure

Corporate executives are typically employed, duringthe early stages of their career, on the basis of a havinga particular functional expertise or skill. However, asthey progress through the organisation, this functionalexpertise becomes less important. At higher levels inthe organisation, executives need to have developeda broad, comprehensive understanding of all the

constituent functions in their organisation, not justtheir own. They need to have a strong understandingof the global business environment, in order tomake well-informed strategic decisions for theirorganisation. They need to have well developed ‘softskills’, in order to manage and lead others effectively. And they need to be part of a strong, global peer

network that will provide the connectivity andadvice to help them advance in their careers. Thisis not a typical MBA programme – the CambridgeExecutive MBA has been carefully and deliberatelydesigned to meet the needs of senior executives.

    Core courses

It is critical that those responsible for running an

organisation have a thorough knowledge of its variouscomponent parts. The Cambridge Executive MBAprovides a strong overview of the principal functionalarea of an organisation. We ensure that our participantsunderstand the role of different business departments, are familiar with their key tools and methodologies, appreciate the way in which they operate in the wider

organisational context, and are fully conversant with thelanguage and terminology they use.

PracticalWe are committed to delivering aprogramme which is appropriate to yourwork so you can apply your newly acquiredknowledge and skills as soon as you returnto work after a weekend session. Eachcourse aims to provide ideas, insights and

frameworks that will help you be moreeffective in your organisation. We also offera team consulting project, comprising aweek-long group project, where you workin a small team for a specific client on alive project. Client companies typicallyimplement the recommendations and

    strategies developed during these projects.

“I had to pick just two

    electives when I was

    doing the programme,

    and afterwards there was

    a lot of feedback from

    the other participants

    about the courses they’d

done. I felt I’d really beinterested to do some

    of those courses myself,

    and when I came back

this year I was able to

    do the Fast Strategy,

    Intrapreneurship and

    Business Instinct elective.”
