E At the heart of University music-making, CUMS exists to enhance theexcellence of music performance at Cambridge. Our ensembles bring boldprogrammes to the platform and the 2015-2016 Season promises to be ourmost exciting yet.

This Autumn boasts a terrific wealth of opportunities for our musicians,including CUCO performing at London’s Kings Place and John Wilsonconducting Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.2 with CUMS Symphony Orchestra.In October, selected instrumentalists perform in a programme ofcontemporary music alongside members of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Forour most ambitious event of the season, we are thrilled to welcome RichardFarnes, Music Director of Opera North, to conduct Act I of Verdi’s Otello, inKing’s College Chapel. In the final term, I am particularly looking forward towelcoming Paul Daniel who will conduct CUCO in a performance of Brahms’impassioned 3rd Symphony.

Our Lunchtime Concert Series continues its varied offering through the year,which includes the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, New MusicEnsemble, the Gesualdo Six and the Cambridge University PercussionEnsemble – all free to attend! Our Competitions augment the exceptionalopportunities for the University’s most talented musicians. The 2015 ConcertoCompetition winner, Julia Hwang, will perform with returning conductor CarlosIzcaray. Joel Sandelson, our Conducting Scholar, tackles Mahler’s monumental5th Symphony in October; and the première of a new work by our Composer-in-Residence, Chris Mortlock, promises to be an unmissable addition to the diary.

We say farewell to Stephen Cleobury after a distinguished association withCUMS for over 30 years. For his final concert in June, Stephen has chosenElgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and is joined by three outstanding soloists whoall started their musical careers in Cambridge.

Singing in the Chorus has provided some glorious musicalexperiences, and this year is no exception as our season includeswell-loved choral works and the opportunity to explore a rareoratorio by Louis Spohr. Rachmaninov described his choralmasterpiece The Bells as ‘of all my works the one I love most’ andI am particularly excited to perform it in all its glory in Russian.Ending the year with The Dream of Gerontius will be a movingmoment for the Chorus as, with three outstanding Cambridgealumni as soloists, we mark Stephen Cleobury’s final concert asPrincipal Conductor.

I have played in the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra forthe past year, and have hugely enjoyed being part of such a

dynamic ensemble, playing a range of repertoire from Mozart'sPiano Concerto No.4 with Stephen Kovacevich to Britten's WarRequiem with the Britten Sinfonia. This season, I’m particularly

looking forward to Paul Daniel joining us for Stravinsky, and it is areal treat that Jack Liebeck has found time in his busy schedule to

come to perform the sensational Lindberg Violin Concerto.

This coming year is going to be very exciting as apercussionist in CUMS SO. I am very much looking

forward to being able to perform one of my favouriteworks, Mahler's Fifth Symphony, in Michaelmas term. In

addition, the Cambridge University Percussion Ensemble(comprising percussionists primarily from CUMS SO) will

perform in the Lunchtime series, affording players theopportunity to experience not only standard ensemblerepertoire, but also newly-composed works. This year

promises to be a lot of fun.

This is shaping up to be a hugely enjoyable musical seasonfor members of the Cambridge University Wind Orchestraand I am delighted to be conducting all of their concertsthis year. Highlights include the annual Varsity concert (inwhich we share the stage with the wind orchestra from theUniversity of Oxford), the ever-popular schools concert(which will include some choreographically strikingmoments in our performance of Eric Whitacre’s GodzillaEats Las Vegas) and our joint concert with the CUMSConcert Orchestra.

Our HistoryCUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguisheduniversity music societies in the world. It offers a world-class musical education for members of the Universityand local residents, nurturing the great musicians of thefuture and providing performing opportunities for over500 Cambridge musicians every year. The society hasplayed a pivotal role in British musical life for over 170years. It has educated Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder,Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner, ChristopherHogwood and Robin Ticciati, has premièred works byBrahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Rutter, Saxton andVaughan Williams, and has given generations ofCambridge musicians the experience of performingalongside visiting conductors and soloists includingBritten, Dvorák, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Sincethe 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several ofBritain’s finest musicians, including Sir Charles VilliersStanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and, from1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury. In 2009, StephenCleobury assumed a new role as Principal Conductor ofthe CUMS Chorus, Sir Roger Norrington was appointedas Principal Guest Conductor and a series was launchedto expose CUMS members to a succession of world-classvisiting conductors. In 2010, CUMS entered another newphase when it merged with the Cambridge UniversityChamber Orchestra and Cambridge University MusicClub. In October 2010, the Society launched theCambridge University Lunchtime Concerts – a new seriesof weekly chamber recitals at West Road Concert Hallshowcasing our finest musical talent. In 2011 it welcomedthe Cambridge University Chamber Choir, which isdirected by Martin Ennis and David Lowe. Most recently,

in 2014, the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra andthe Cambridge University New Music Ensemble joinedCUMS as associate ensembles. CUMS continues toprovide opportunities for our finest student soloists andconductors by awarding conducting scholarships andconcerto prizes, and it encourages new music by runninga Composition Competition and premièring at least onenew work each year. Recent highlights have includedWagner’s Parsifal (Act III) conducted by Sir Mark Elder, arecording of Haydn and Mozart symphonies with SirRoger Norrington, a recording of The Epic of Everest’soriginal score for the British Film Institute and Britten’sWar Requiem conducted by Stephen Cleobury in ElyCathedral.

Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided uniqueopportunities for successive generations of Cambridgemusicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural lifeof the University and City, and, having launched many ofthe biggest careers in classical music, it has played a piv-otal role in the musical world beyond. CUMS receives nocore funding from the University, and income from ticketsales does not meet the full cost of delivering a world-class musical education. The CUMS Supporters’ Circlehas been established to address this pressing financialneed. All those who value Cambridge’s vibrant musicalheritage, and want to maintain it for the 21st century, areinvited to join the Circle.
