The Doctrine of Sanctification
THEOLOGY
6 - 10 July
The New Testament calls every Christian to grow in maturity. Our sanctification is expressed in increasing conformity to the likeness of Christ and growth in holiness. It is the work of God’s grace through faith.
But what is the impact of this saving work of Christ for us and on us? Does his work restore us or replace us, and what does this mean for the human mind, will, emotions and imagination? What role does God’s Law play as we are renewed by the power of Christ and the Spirit?
Professor Jerram Barrs of Covenant Theological Seminary in Missouri will examine the doctrine of sanctification, how it is presented in Scripture and how God brings transformation into our lives.
When Jerram last taught this course in 2009, feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One attendee wrote: “Jerram with his gentle and gracious demeanor has unpacked, in a practical way, what it is to be on a journey to sanctification. Sanctification was before a theological concept. It is now something that will impact every level of my life.”
The 2015 Cambridge Summer School of Apologetics has been put together to address the corrosive influence of naturalism.
Andrew Fellows, Director of the English L’Abri Fellowship, will counter the naturalistic perception of what it means to be human and consider the importance of developing a Christian mind.
Dr Peter Williams of Tyndale House, Centre for Biblical Research in Cambridge, will tackle moral objections to the Old Testament and present new evidence on the Bible’s historicity.
John Lennox, Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University, will offer an in-depth exposition on the Biblical account of Daniel and his companions, who maintained both a private devotion to God and a high-profile witness in a pluralistic society that was antagonistic to their faith.
Following this, Professor Lennox will explain why theism sits more comfortably with science than atheism, address the question of suffering and a loving God, discuss his encounters with the New Atheism, and respond to your questions.
A Biblical Approach to Counselling
COUNSELLING
13 - 17 July
‘A Biblical Approach to Counselling’ will study the relationship between theology, psychology and counselling in order to establish a framework for Christian counselling.
Designed for anyone who would like to develop understanding, discernment and practical application in caring and counselling, the course will explore issues of grief and depression, anger and forgiveness, anxiety and fear, perfectionism and addictions.
Professor Richard Winter teaches pastoral counselling at Covenant Theological Seminary in Missouri, where he prepares Masters students to become Licensed Professional Counsellors. Richard is the author of ‘Perfecting Ourselves to Death’ (2005) and ‘When Life Goes Dark’ (2012).
“Richard carries with him a wealth of experience in counselling, both as a practitioner and as a teacher. All this is undergirded by a passion for theology and worldview thinking. I cannot recommend this course too highly.”Andrew Fellows, Director of L’Abri England
