Cambridge: a student city like no other

Cambridge attracts those who desire both the experience of the old and the excitement of the new. Its beautiful gothic architecture, main attractions within walking distance, lush botanic gardens and the tranquil River Cam make it one of the UK’s most visited cities. With its large student population, Cambridge offers far more than scenery.

The city has a fantastic selection of cafés, restaurants, pubs, trendy high street shops and popular music venues such as The Junction and the Corn Exchange, where international and local acts such as Blur, David Gray, Elbow, Feeder, Jamiroquai and The Arctic Monkeys make regular appearances. There is also a thriving cultural scene with venues offering exhibitions, plays and concerts.

Cambridge is well known for its love of sports including cricket, football, rowing, rugby and tennis. Students can join the friendly locals at any of the open green spaces in the city centre such as Jesus Green for a game of football.

Anglia Ruskin’s campus is located in the centre of the city and is well resourced with modern lecture halls, seminar rooms, laboratories and studios. There is also a library, a theatre, a medical centre and great social amenities. An ongoing investment programme has added new facilities including art studios and a state-of-the-art language centre.

As well as being home to some of the world’s greatest intellects, Cambridge is also recognised as a centre of technological innovation, due to the growth of the local high-tech industry.

Chelmsford: 35 minutes from London

Just a 35 minute train ride away from London, Chelmsford is a lively, vibrant town in the historical county of Essex.

The famous V Festival is held in Chelmsford’s Hylands Park, and the 2011 festival featured acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris, Rihanna and Eminem. Chelmsford also has numerous theatres, an eight screen cinema, great nightclubs and cosy pubs, all found in the high street and west end areas of town. Shopping venues include High Chelmer and Meadows shopping centres and a daily indoor market. Chelmsford has golf courses, rugby and hockey clubs, as well as the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre. Essex County Cricket Club plays frequent matches during the season and its grounds are within walking distance of the bus and railway stations.

Anglia Ruskin University’s modern campus is set in the lush green Rivermead area of Chelmsford, a short walk from the town centre. It has a wealth of industry-leading facilities, including the new Health and Social Care building with state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities. It also has a fully equipped gym.

The campus is home to the Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS), the largest business school in the UK’s eastern region. LAIBS is well recognised by students, employers and professional bodies as a vital centre for business education and training.

The Marconi Building, the result of a £15 million investment, houses the Faculties of Science and Technology, Arts, Law and Social Sciences. Facilities include an amphitheatre, a mock law court and a 150 seat lecture theatre.

Choosing the right accommodation

CRIC offers a variety of accommodation options. It’s important that you spend some time thinking about which is the right choice for you.

In Cambridge we offer accommodation in:

• CB1 (Anglia Ruskin University hall of residence)

• Peter Taylor House (Anglia Ruskin University hall of residence)

• host family accommodation through Homestay Consultancy.

In Chelmsford we offer accommodation in Ransomes Way student village.

In this guide we list the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Read each section carefully and take advice from your family and friends. The following questions and answers may also help with your decision.

When should I book my accommodation?

We strongly advise that you book your accommodation as soon as you accept your offer of admission at CRIC. We only have a limited number of rooms available and we work on the basis of first come, first served.

How do I book my preferred accommodation?

Once you have accepted your offer of admission, the CRIC team will send you an application for accommodation form. You will need to complete this and return it as soon as possible to Mr Andrew Richards, Student Services Manager, at [email protected].

When do I have to pay and how much will it cost?

For Peter Taylor House, CB1 and Ransomes Way accommodation you will also need to make a down payment of £1000 and then pay the remaining accommodation fee before you arrive at CRIC. We are unable to give any student access to a room without the full semester fees being paid. For host family accommodation you will need to ensure the full fees are paid in advance of arriving.

What happens if I can’t have my first choice?

If your preference as specified on the application for accommodation form is not available, we will try to provide alternative accommodation that meets your needs as closely as possible.

I’m under 18 years of age. What accommodation options are available to me?

If you are younger than 18, you must stay with one of our host families in homestay accommodation. In a homestay, you live with a typical British family in their house. Please contact us at [email protected] for more information about homestays.

What can I do if I change my mind about the accommodation I’ve requested?

If there are still rooms available in another type of accommodation, we will be able to change your room for you. However, you will need to give us at least 24 hours’ notice before you arrive in the UK so we can make the change.

I’m not confident about living on my own. What type of accommodation is best for me?

If you prefer not to live on your own in student accommodation we can arrange homestay accommodation for you. Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like more information about homestay options.

Will I have to clean where I live?

Yes. All CRIC accommodation, apart from homestay accommodation, is self-catering. This means you and the other students are responsible for keeping your own rooms clean, as well as any communal areas in your accommodation. We conduct random checks of all houses and halls of residence to ensure they are kept clean. If you damage any room or communal area, including furniture and other equipment, the cost will be deducted from your security deposit.

What laundry facilities are available?

In all of the accommodation at Aston House CB1, Peter Taylor House or Ransomes Way, you will have full use of on–site laundrette facilities. If you are in homestay accommodation, you will need to ask your host family about their laundry facilities, as these will vary from house to house.

What kitchen facilities are available?

All of the accommodation in CRIC halls of residence come with fully equipped kitchen facilities. However, you will need to provide your own cooking pots and pans and cutlery as this is not provided by CRIC. Host family accommodation varies depending on the type of board you have chosen.

What is council tax, and will I have to pay it?

Council tax is a charge levied by the local city council to people living in the area. It covers things like local emergency services and refuse removal. Students living in halls of residence are automatically exempt from council tax. If you choose to live in private off-campus housing, however, to be exempt you will need to give the city council a letter from CRIC confirming that you are a student with us. If the council does not accept your application for council tax exemption, you will need to pay council tax in full. Unfortunately, this is beyond CRIC’s control.

Accommodation options in Cambridge

CRIC students can choose from two accommodation options in Cambridge: CB1 (Anglia Ruskin University hall of residence); Peter Taylor House (Anglia Ruskin University hall of residence).

University halls of residence: CB1

Built in 2012, CB1 offers beautifully designed en-suite rooms and studios in a premium Cambridge location. This university accredited accommodation offers an allocation of 46 en-suite rooms and four studio flats for CRIC students.

Located opposite Cambridge train station, CB1 is a 15 minute walk from the CRIC campus and Anglia Ruskin University Library. With a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops right near your doorstep and Cambridge Leisure Park just a short walk away, student life doesn’t get much better!

Within CB1, groups of seven or eight students share a large, fully fitted, self-catering kitchen and spacious communal area. Secure bike storage and coin operated laundrette facilities are also available.

Students in the studio flats have their own kitchens including a fridge, sink, drainage unit and two hob electric cooker, as well as a dining area. These students are also free to use the communal area.

Heating, power and water bills (up to areasonable threshold) are included in theaccommodation fee. We will also provide each student with a free bedding and kitchen pack.

CRIC will also provide cleaning for all communal areas. This will take place twice a week. Students are expected to do their own washing up after cooking.

All rooms are single occupancy, allocated for one semester. Many students find that after their first semester at CRIC, they may wish to move into a share house with friends.

To ensure your safety and security, CB1 also features an electronic entry system and 24 hour CCTV. CRIC Support Services staff are on call 24/7, and on-site management staff and security guards are also available in the event of an emergency.

• The atmosphere is lively and vibrant.

Disadvantages• Rooms are only available for one semester.

• All students share the cleaning.

• The location can be quite noisy at times.

CB1 is the best choice if you:• are sociable

• would prefer to live close to campus

• are happy to share communal spaces with other students

• want to enjoy typical student life in the UK.

University halls of residence: Peter Taylor House

Peter Taylor House is the largest hall of residence at Anglia Ruskin University’s main Cambridge campus. Located next to the CRIC building, it is also close to facilities such as the University Library, computer access area and Students’ Union.

Groups of six students in Peter Taylor House share a large, fully fitted, self-catering kitchen with a dining table. Bike racks and coin operated laundrette facilities are also available.

Heating, power and water bills (up to a reasonable threshold) are included in the accommodation fee.

All rooms are single occupancy, allocated for one semester. Many students find that after their first semester at CRIC, they may wish to move into a share house with friends.

CRIC Support Services staff are on call 24/7. Resident assistants and university security staff are also available in the event of an emergency.

Accommodation options in Chelmsford

University halls of residence: Ransomes Way

The Chelmsford student village, Ransomes Way, is located on campus near Chelmsford town centre and the main line railway station. It is also within walking distance of shops, restaurants, the campus library and gym, the Students’ Union and, most importantly, your classes.

CRIC has an allocation of 10 en-suite rooms at Ransomes Way, with standard rooms and large rooms both available. All rooms are located in flats of three, five or six bedrooms.

Students share a small kitchen in three bedroom flats or a kitchen/dining room in five or six bedroom flats. Each flat’s fully fitted self-catering kitchen facilities include a dining table and chairs.

Heating, power and water bills (up to a reasonable threshold) are included in the accommodation fee. Two on-site laundrettes (coin operated, and contractor managed) and external bike racks are also available.

All rooms are single occupancy, allocated for the duration of one academic year (approximately 40 weeks).

On-site, 24 hour CCTV is in operation at Ransomes Way, and CRIC Support Services staff are on call 24/7. Resident assistants and university security staff are also available in the event of an emergency.

Booking your accommodation with CRICOnce you have chosen your preferred accommodation, you will need to:

1. Complete the CRIC accommodation form and email it to Mr Andrew Richards at [email protected].

2. Make the accommodation payment by bank transfer.

3. You can also now make an online application for accommodation. Please visit cric.navitas.com/ students/accommodation to apply for accommodation online.

After you have submitted the completed accommodation form and paid for your accommodation, we will send you a Confirmation of Accommodation. This document will help you obtain your student visa.
