We wish Steve Edwards every success with his new venture ‘op norf’. After many years of cajoling the Owls and the Thames Valley Conference, he has decided to honour a commitment to move closer to his wife’s family. Only 30 years late. He has promised to return for guest appearances, if selected. Steve took over a dispirited Owls side some 15 years ago and turned it into the true social and winning side you see today (witnessed by the revelry at the Dinner Dance). To ensure that the Owls had similar minded sides to play he was one of the founding fathers of the Thames Valley Conference. In honour of Steve’s commitment to the side he was presented with an engraved tankard following the well spirited match against the U14s. We might need to send a supply of Pride with him to keep the tankard topped up! After many years of nose bleeds when drifting into the opponents D he managed to score the goal of the century with a reverse stick volley into the Slough goal. For this his team mates awarded the Goal of the season and after a revote in the bar was awarded the Player of the Season.

Steve had this to say: Hi Everyone, I'd just like to say thank you for giving me a C&F HC Lifetime Achievement Award. I really am stunned. It's lucky I couldn't make it last night as it would have been embarrassing opening my mouth and no words coming out!. I should have been there, my wife's 'do' was OK... but.... (don't tell her I said that!) When I think about all the work others do, notably yourselves, I feel very humble. Martin, Jax, Pies, Pete, Nig, etc... just brilliant.

I've served on C'tee's for numerous Car Club's, organised BIG car rallies, the TVC, and it's hard work with little acknowledgement from the membership. I hope you know I've always appreciated your work. I've been captaining the Owls for 20 years and took over when they were a shambles. Some say they still are!. But I think the Owls represent the club well and this in turn helps our standing within the hockey community and the bar takings. The Owls now give players longevity, a place to go when your fed up chasing young hockey kids, but shopping is still out of the question. I think they complete the circle at our hockey club. I hope this award gives me the right to tether my goats outside the clubhouse, in which case I'm off to buy some. Doug and Alex will be taking the reins next season whilst my 'remains' will be swept into a corner of the bar after I collapse in a heap! Thanks again. Steve

Camberley and Farnborough Hockey Club celebrated another successful season with their Dinner and Dance held at Camberley Cricket Club. The event was a massive success with record numbers attending the end of season event, which including a three-course meal and individual player and club-wide awards for contribution to the club handed out. “The event proved to be a massive hit with everyone who attended, “said Social Secretary Emily Gomes, who – along with Lucy Gomes – arranged the event. “Everyone enjoyed a three-course meal and the after-awards disco was fab. Massive thanks go to the cricket club for hosting us and to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable night. “Lucy and I would also like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped, including Leo for designing tickets and posters, Pies for publicising the event, Ali for sorting the decorations and the team of helpers who helped to set up on the day. “This year was also a record turnout for the Dinner and Dance, with 104 people attending! So here’s to a bigger and better night next season!”

19th May 2014 The Men’s 1st XI – who have enjoyed three promotions in the last four years – defeated Midlands Regional Division side Bromsgrove 6-2 in their semi-final match to book their place in the final, which was played in Nottingham on May 3rd. Speaking after the win, Men’s 1st XI captain Andrew Smith said: “To have achieved the feat of becoming National Champions is just amazing, especially as a Regional team who were up against National Division sides. It’s testament to the dedicated to the team, our coach and everyone who has supported us along the way. “It’s also a great way to finish off the season and a fantastic boost for everyone involved in C&F HC – it really is a massive achievement. We’d like to thank everyone who helped out and the supporters who travelled to watch us play. Hopefully this will be a boost to every team who play for C&F HC and can give them that extra bit of drive and determination as they prepare for the new season during the summer months.” The club, who play and train at Kings International College, currently have four men’s teams and three ladies’ teams, as well as veterans side The Owls and a blossoming Colts set-up.

Pikey scores the first goal!

Despite the success the team has enjoyed, Smith says that the club is always on the look-out for new players at every level: “We are a very welcoming club and run a Back to Hockey scheme for those who would like to try hockey, or get back in to it after time out. And players are always welcome to come along to our training sessions and have a run out.” Click here for highlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBTZYPGjAnY Match report further down.

Chris Davison has taken on the task of organising the Men's summer hockey this year. The games will not be starting until the end of June, but he wants to gauge the interest for this. There will most likely be home and away games (home on Monday evenings) of clubs not too far a drive away. All are welcome to join in, but please be aware that these will be fun, sociable games. Also, it would be good to have a regular side put together, otherwise you'll be receiving these posts every week for him to organise... Please email him if you are interested saying if you can play regular games or not [email protected]

19th May 2014 “The aim of the Back To Hockey scheme is to give people the chance to have a go at hockey or to help those who have not played for a time get back into the game,” explained Jacqui Boot, who runs the Back To Hockey scheme at the club. Jacqui, who has been involved with the club for 30 seasons and still plays for the Ladies 1st XI, says the scheme has proved really successful for both the players involved and the club. “It’s a great scheme because it gives you the chance to play a team sport, whether you want to work on your health and fitness or just have some fun. “Anyone can take part who wants to improve their core skills, and practice the fundamentals of hockey. It has been very successful in rejuvenating this club – especially the ladies section.” The scheme, which is part of England Hockey’s campaign to help clubs grow, has encouraged many players to get back into the sport, and these no-pressure, fun sessions are the perfect way to kick-start your return to the game. “Personally I have seen players regain their confidence and put into practice the very core skills that make for good club players – one of our ladies who started in the Back To Hockey scheme last year went on to play for the Ladies 1st XI in the Surrey league and was voted The Most Improved Player of the Season. Another has just completed her Level 1 Coaching qualification.” Ladies 1st XI Captain Ali Holme said: “The sessions are designed to be fun and we encourage everyone to come along – we’ve even had some of our regular players pop down to try and polish up their skills! The sessions run from 7.30pm to 9pm every Wednesday night until 26th June, and focus on core skills to provide players with the basics, followed by a small game. If people enjoy playing then they are welcome to become part of the club and keep playing throughout the season.” To get involved or to find out more, please contact Jacqui Boot [email protected] for more information or visit the Club’s website at www.candfhockey.co.uk

The kids are all right. The Owls treated this like any other league game. Just as well as these ‘little tykes’ kept running around causing havoc. Indeed the U14’s defence and midfield were pretty good, but the attack a little light hence the final score. But you have got to give respect to the young ‘uns, they were not daunted by bigger opposition and never gave up. This was amply highlighted for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half when the Owls rear guard came under severe pressure and chances for the U14’s went begging. By this time the ‘home side’ were 3 – 0 up with Doug repeatedly aiming for jug avoidance without even scoring.

Owls defending.

So what was the main difference? Well he’s back! With that smooth Irish brogue Ian announced as well as bringing Patrick he’d also packed his kit just in case 10 minutes was on offer. “Get changed”, was the chorus as our passing talisman headed to the changing rooms. Patrick obviously knew the threat, for as well as tackling the ‘old man’ he was also heard to shout “Get him” to the nearest U14 player when Ian had the ball. At 5-0 up Steve was feeling a little sad for the U14’s as they were playing with great spirit, so he approach their coach to ask if all the U14 subs could come on for the final 10 minutes. As if to show how much attention he’d been paying to the game, he was advised they were all playing anyway!

Owls defending, again!

The Owls should have let the kids score, their efforts did merit it, but that would have been disrespectful to the great keeper the U14’s had lent to them. He deserved his ‘clean sheet’ for some nice saves and kicks.

19th May 2014 Final score: 5-0 to the Owls. Scorers: Moley (2), Lovvie, Ian, Doug. As the boys get bigger the Owls will get their come uppance…. Will it be next year as the U15’s, or the year after as the U16’s The Owls will enjoy their victory while they can. Nig umpired brilliantly from the centre circle and Keith and Phil Rolandi (nice to see Phil back) acted as official photographers for the day. Back in the bar the U14’s got their own back by eating all the food, and Doug presented Steve with a tankard to commemorate his Owls captaincy. A good day had by all. Report by Steve Edwards.

Camberley & Farnborough blew aside league form as they defeated Basingstoke to lift the NOW: Pensions Men’s Vase. The first action of the game came on three minutes when Basingstoke won a Penalty Corner and although the ball ended up in the net, an offence had already been committed by the defender. Camberley & Farnborough responded positively and were awarded their first Penalty Corner on six minutes, with Simon Needham having his shot blocked. Basingstoke edged the majority of the first half and went close through Grant Rouse, David Stones and Graham Lang.

The defence held strong

However, it was Camberley & Farnborough that would go into the break ahead. Todd Hutcheson and Andrew Smith combined to draw a fantastic save from Adam Smith, but from the same attack Hutcheson and Smith combined once more with the latter slotting the ball into an empty net.

Captain for the day, Andy Smith, leads from the front

Camberley & Farnborough had the chance to double this lead in the first minute of the second half but Smith was on hand to pull off another fine save. This proved to be vital as Basingstoke went straight down the other end to equalise through Daniel Bowden who lifted the ball over the advancing keeper after Grant Rouse played the ball into the D. Basingstoke had an unconverted Penalty Corner just before Camberley retook the lead with Simon Needham striking an unstoppable shot from a Corner past the keeper.

Simon Needham with his ‘unstoppable shot’!

It didn’t take Basingstoke long to get back on terms, with Ben Shaughnessy keeping his calm to convert a Penalty Stroke after a defending foot prevented the ball from going in. The next 15 minutes was a tight affair with neither team creating many chances as the defences stood firm. It was however a defensive error that lead to the winning goal when Todd Hutcheson intercepted a back line pass to run through and slot the ball under the keeper. Basingstoke pushed for an equaliser and had two Penalty Corners in the final five minutes but were unable to score as Camberley & Farnborough held on for victory.
