Ofcrucialimportance,inmyopinion,ishowwedefine'responsibleforbringing

thechildrenup'.Atitssimplest,itcouldmeangivingthefinancialsupport

necessarytoprovideahome,foodandclothesandmakingsurethechildissafe

andreceivesanadequateeducation.Thiswouldbethebasicdefinition.

Thereis,however,anotherpossiblewayofdefiningthatpartofthequotation.

Thatwouldsayitisnotjustthefathersresponsibilitytoprovidethebasicsforhis

children,whilehiswifeinvolvesherselfintheeverydayactivityofbringingthem

up.Rather,heshouldsharethosedailyduties,spendasmuchtimeashisjob

allowswithhischildren,playwiththem,readtothem,helpdirectlywiththeir

education,participateveryfullyintheirlivesandencouragethemtosharehis.

Itisthissecond,fuller,conceptof'fatherhood'thatIaminfavourof,althoughI

alsorealisehowdifficultitistoachievesometimes.Theeconomicand

employmentsituationinmanycountriesmeansthatjobsaregettingmore,not

less,stressful,requiringlonghoursandperhapslongjourneystoworkaswell.

Thereforeitmayremainformanyadesirableidealratherthananachievable

reality.
