CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH AUGUST 2018
From the Pastor’s Desk …..
Simon Peter answered him; “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of
eternal life.” John 6:68
In John 8:31-32 Jesus said “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Disciples are believers who “hold” to Jesus’ teaching. Trying to unpack what it
means “to hold” to Jesus’ teaching however can be hard. So I suggest the
following signs or “habits” help us to be informed and effective followers of Jesus.
Years ago I read a book entitled “The 7 Habits of Discipleship” and enjoyed the
thoroughly biblical way in which the author treated the habits or “marks” of being
a follower of Jesus. To review, they are:
Worship weekly
Pray daily
Read and study the Bible regularly
Seek to live your faith in daily life
Seek the supporting relationship of other Christians
Grow in giving toward the goal of tithing
Learn to share faith with others
The third “habit” is Bible study. For this I must include a personal testimony. I am
a pastor because of a Bible Study I became a part of years ago. As a “new”
missionary in Tanzania, along with Marcella, I became involved for the first time
in my life in a weekly Bible Study. We had a core group of about 15 folks who
met each Tuesday night in one of our homes.
Our sessions were usually centered on a book of the Bible, though occasionally we
did studies of persons of the Bible or subjects such as forgiveness, justice for the
poor, etc. The point is that I was, for the first time in my life, captured by the
Word of God. The insights our study leaders shared were fascinating to me, and
the concern to grow to be more like Jesus through our study of his Word awakened
my faith in a whole new way.
Page 2 - Calvary Crossroads
From the Pastor’s Desk (continued)
In short, I truly believe I owe my present vocation of being a parish pastor to those years of studies with a group of Christians in
Tanzania. It lit the fire for me. It created in me a desire to understand God’s word, apply it to my own life, teach it to others, and to find
ways to share what I believed with others. Seminary was the route to my new vocation, but those studies in Africa were the fuel that
started me on this journey. I believe God desires that of all his people…to have this knowledge, and excitement about living that comes
from the treasures God’s word contains for everyone.
We have several small groups that regularly dwell in the Word, and I’d encourage you to reach out to our small group ministry
coordinators Sue Vollmar or Mary Ellen Thiede to become part of an existing group or work with them to form a new one.
On Sunday mornings we have two adult studies that meet during the school year, with different approaches – one generally topical
and the other generally book of the Bible driven. I am grateful to Wayne Johnson and Jim Harrison for leading these studies for so
many years.
Once again this fall there will be a high school Bible study.
Grace Gunnlaugsson leads a Women’s Bible study regularly during the school year. She also makes available to everyone in our
congregation another form of dwelling in the word – the devotion books “Jesus Calling” and “Jesus Always”, which are available on
the table in the Narthex.
Our congregation also supplies the daily devotion books “Christ in the Home” and “Portals of Prayer.” The magazine of the NALC
– “Connections”, published six times a year is available in the entryway of our church or by home subscription, and these
publications include studies as well as other faith-related reading of first rate quality.
For those ambitious enough to read through the entire Bible, the NALC has produced a resource to guide you through in one year,
but even if you can’t keep that pace, it will keep you on track. The first time I tried this I got bogged down, but the second and third
times were successful and yielded for me immense satisfaction as well as insight into the grand sweep of God’s holy word. That
reading guide and a daily devotional can be found on the NALC website www.thenalc.org or you can ask me for a copy.
Followers of Jesus - please follow the words of a follower of Jesus – Peter – and regularly avail yourselves to “the Words of eternal
life”. Be in the Word, and the Word will awaken in you. Take up and read …
Because of a cross,
Pastor Ken Nelson

“For Your Eyes Only” Sponsored by S.A.L.T. (Senior Adults Living Triumphantly)
If you’re 60 or older – or even if you’re not, but this sounds interesting to you – we hope you can join us on
Thursday, September 20 at 11:00 a.m. for a program devoted to eyes … all of our aging eyes.
We’ll begin in the sanctuary with a short DVD introducing our topic for the day, age-related macular
degeneration (AMD). This is a health issue that affects nearly all of us seniors at some point, whether it’s
watching for early indicators or dealing with the actual disease. Our own Audrey McGarvie will share her
experience with us after the DVD.
At 11:45 a.m. we’ll enjoy a light lunch in Fellowship Hall (free will offering), and at 12:15 p.m. we’ll be joined by Dr. Mackenzie Sward
from Milwaukee Eye Care for an explanation of AMD and an update on current treatments. During medical school Dr. Sward served as
president of the Student Sight Savers Association and organized many free community eye screenings. During this time, she also participated
in research on macular degeneration at the Mayo Clinic.
There will be time for questions of Dr. Sward after her presentation. There will also be a table of resource materials you can take home.
Because this is such an important topic, we encourage you to invite your friends and neighbors to join us! Watch for the sign-up sheet
on the narthex doors beginning August1. If you have questions, contact Grace Gunnlaugsson ([email protected]) or Audrey McGarvie
Women’s Bib le Study
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests
be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6
We have all heard or read these words many times, and we’ve probably understood them to mean we are never to be anxious or worry. This
fall, in a 5-session DVD-based Bible study we’ll learn that, while anxiety is part of life, it doesn’t have to dominate life.
At Calvary, we women have generally turned to women to lead us via DVD studies; but this fall, we’re going to learn from renowned pastor
and writer Max Lucado. He’ll introduce us to God’s prescription for worry written in Philippians:
Celebrate His goodness
Ask for help
Leave your concerns with Him
Meditate on good things
Looking at the first letters of each of those lines, we see the world CALM. We can stop letting anxiety rule our days. We can find true calm
and contentment in Christ.
We invite you to consider being part of this study. Each session lasts 60-90 minutes. There is a study guide with an optional personal study
section at the end of each unit. There is also a hard-cover book by Pastor Lucado that delves more deeply into the teaching he does on the
DVD. All of these materials are offered without cost through a gift from an anonymous friend of Calvary. And if you have time only to come
and watch the video, you will be blessed by it.
We want to offer the study at times that will meet the needs and schedules of as many women as possible. Please take a few minutes to look
at the grid of possibilities on the Narthex window, fill in your name, and then check off any boxes that would work for you. We’ll narrow it
down to two or three options and publish the schedule in August. Please indicate as well if you’d like a copy of the study guide and/or the
hard cover book. Questions? Please contact Grace Gunnlaugsson at [email protected].

Congregation News and Events
All Calvary women are invited to be part of the monthly book discussions. We’ll begin a new year
of book group meetings on Monday, September 10 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm in Room 110. Our first
book is Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper.
Eighty-three-year-old Etta has never seen the ocean. So early one morning she takes a rifle, some
chocolate, and her best boots and begins walking the 3,232 kilometers from rural Saskatchewan,
Canada eastward to the sea. As Etta walks further toward the crashing waves, the lines among
memory, illusion, and reality blur.
Moving from the hot and dry present of a quiet Canadian farm to a dusty, burnt past of hunger, war, and
passion, from trying to remember to trying to forget, Etta and Otto and Russell and James is an astounding
literary debut “of deep longing, for reinvention and self-discovery, as well as for the past and for love and
for the boundless unknown” (San Francisco Chronicle). “In this haunting debut, set in a starkly beautiful
landscape, Hooper delineates the stories of Etta and the men she loved (Otto and Russell) as they
intertwine through youth and wartime and into old age. It’s a lovely book you’ll want to linger
over” (People).
The Fellowship/Church Life committee is an active ministry at Calvary. In addition to the Church Life team,
the Knitters and S.A.L.T. (Seniors Adults Living Triumphantly) are also part of this ministry group that contribute to the
fellowship at Calvary.
Church Life plans some of the social activities for Calvary’s members and friends. Some of
the events from the past years have included Starry Nights, Cinco de Mayo dinner, Spring
Fling dinner, Sunset Theater outings, Hall-O-Wine party, golf outing, mini-golf event,
Milwaukee River boat cruise and several Sign Making parties.
S.A.L.T. provides outings, fellowship and educational
opportunities for the seniors of our church. Some of their events have included a tour of the
Basilica of St. Josaphat, Ten Chimneys, and the Museum of Wisconsin Art. Educational
speakers have covered health and financial topics of interest to seniors.
The Knitters meet regularly for fellowship and to create beautiful prayer shawls. Pocket
prayer shawls are also available in the baskets by the entry into the Sanctuary.

Summer Sermon Series Continues with “The Holy Spirit Month”
What does the Bible say about the Holy Spirit? What important role does the Holy Spirit play in our lives?
These and similar questions about the Holy Spirit were submitted earlier this year by members of Calvary when
asked about topics to be covered in a future sermon series.
Pastor Ken has decided to dedicate five weeks to this important subject, sampling from a number of biblical
sources and shaping the weekly topics around Luther’s Small Catechism and his teaching on the 3rd Article of the
Apostle’s Creed. He will approach this theme from the standpoint of what we mean when we say “I believe in
the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of
the body, and the life everlasting.”
Here are the planned weekly topics:
August 5th – “Trinity Re-Visited/What Do We Mean by Persons? How Does the Holy Spirit “do” God?” - Pastor Ken Nelson
August 12th – “The Work of the Spirit – Calling us to Faith” – Pastor Jerry Wittmus
August 19th – “The Work of the Spirit – Gathering the Christian Church” – Pastor Jerry Wittmus
August 26th – “The Work of the Spirit – Sanctification and Christian Life” – Pastor Ken Nelson
September 2nd – “The Work of the Spirit – Gifts” – Pastor Ken Nelson
The Summer Choir has participated in worship in June and July and
will participate in the worship service one more time this summer —
Sunday, August 19. If you’d like to join, please arrive in the Choir
Room at 8:15am, where you’ll learn a simple anthem, and then sing at
9:00 worship. This is a low-impact way to explore Alleluia Choir and
share your voice.
Our Contemporary Musicians provided entertainment
to those who walked by before and after the July 4 parade.
They also perform at worship services throughout the year
and we thank them for their ongoing gifts of music.

Use your weekly offering envelopes or a white pew envelope to contribute and note “Mission of the Month” on your check and/or envelope.
Tom Thiede loves to paint! He used this talent recently to touch up much-needed areas around the exterior of the church. He painted around all of our entrance doors, the fascia boards on the education wing, the rusty pipes that run alongside the
north side of the church and the little garage on the east side of the building.
Thanks so much, Tom!
