History Core Subject – Year 9 Only Overview The Year 9 curriculum provides a study of the history of the making of the modern world from 1750 to the present, with an emphasis on Australia in its global context. It was a period of industrialisation and rapid change in the ways people lived, worked and thought. The twentieth century became a critical period in Australia's social, cultural, economic and political development. The transformation of the modern world during a time of political turmoil, global conflicts (World War One and Two) and international cooperation provides a necessary context for understanding Australia's development, its place within the Asia-Pacific region and its global standing. The history content at this year level involves two strands: historical knowledge and understanding, and historical skills. These strands are interrelated and are taught in an integrated way, through the use and interpretation of sources. Structure

Science Core Subject Overview Science provides an empirical way of answering interesting and important questions about the biological, physical and technological world. The knowledge it produces has proved to be a reliable basis for action in our personal, social and economic lives. Science is a dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavour arising from our desire to make sense of our world through exploring the unknown, investigating universal mysteries, making predictions and solving problems. Science aims to understand a large number of observations in terms of a much smaller number of broad principles. Science knowledge is contestable and is revised, refined and extended as new evidence arises. In addition to its practical applications, learning science is a valuable pursuit in its own right. Students can experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them. In doing this, they develop critical and creative thinking skills and challenge themselves to identify questions and draw evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods. The wider benefits of this "scientific literacy" are well established, including giving students the capability to investigate the natural world and changes made to it through human activity. Further to this, at Calvary we present a biblical perspective on the applications and foundations of science, enabling student to develop ethical stewardship. Structure The Science Curriculum is founded upon three interrelated strands: Science Understanding; Science as a Human Endeavour; Science Inquiry Skills. The topics studied in Year 7, 8 and 9 are outlined in the table below: Content Throughout Year 7, 8 and 9 students will study the following topics:

Health and Physical Education Core Subject Overview Health and Physical Education will provide students with the opportunity to learn and appreciate knowledge and skills which will enable them to pursue a healthy lifestyle. The curriculum is divided into two sub strands – Personal, Social and Community Health; Movement and Physical Education.

Personal, Social and Community Health allows students to make decisions regarding their personal health and wellbeing, as well as those around them. Students will engage in community health through biblical values, critical thinking of health issues and focus areas.

Movement and Physical Education enables students to apply movement concepts and skills. Physical activity enhances performance and moving with competence and confidence, whilst developing communication, decision making and problem solving skills in a team environment.

This subject allows students to mature in God’s great commandment, as written in the gospel of Mark 12:30-31 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Structure The Health and Physical Education Curriculum is founded upon two interrelated strands: Personal, Social and Community Health and Movement and Physical Activity. The topics studied in Year 7, 8 and 9 are outlined in the table below: Content Throughout Year 7, 8 and 9 students will study the following topics:

Economics and Business Year 9 Elective Subject Overview Business activity affects the daily lives of all Australians as they work, spend, save, invest, travel and play. It influences jobs, incomes and opportunities for personal enterprise. Business refers to enterprising endeavours undertaken to meet human needs and wants. Business and economic activity impacts on and presents a range of challenges to individuals and members of groups and organisations in their roles as active and informed citizens, consumers, workers or entrepreneurs. Economics and Business is important for students in the later years of schooling as it is at this time that they gain a degree of independence in accumulating and managing finances, make decisions about goods and services, and acquire legal rights and responsibilities as citizens. Students build on their understanding of the ways decisions are made about the allocation of resources by considering the Australian economy, its place in the broader global economy and the interdependence of participants in the global economy. They explore reasons for variations in the performance of economies and investigate the role of governments in managing economic performance to improve living standards. They explore how businesses respond to changing economic conditions and consider different strategies that can be used by consumers, businesses and governments to improve economic, business and financial outcomes. They learn about the roles and responsibilities of participants in the workplace, including the way that businesses can manage their workforce to improve productivity. Structure

Graphics Year 8-9 Elective Subject Overview Technology has been an integral part of society for as long as humans have had the desire to create products to improve their quality of life. In an increasingly technological and complex world, it is important to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills associated with the traditional and contemporary tools used by Australian industries to design and create products. Graphics focuses on the underpinning practices and drawing processes required to produce the drawings used in a variety of industries. This could include graphic design, building and construction, engineering and furnishing. It provides a unique opportunity for students to experience the challenge and personal satisfaction of producing drawings and models while developing beneficial vocational and life skills. Students explore the knowledge, understanding and skills of the core topics through selected topics in response to local needs, available resources and teacher expertise. Through both individual and collaborative learning experiences, students learn to meet client needs and wants through the use of graphics. In Graphics students will develop transferrable skills relevant to a range of industry-based electives and future employment opportunities. Students will communicate using oral and written modes, organise, produce and evaluate graphic drawings. Structure

Information & Communication Technology Year 7 Compulsory Exploratory Subject Overview Students develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively at school and in their lives beyond school. Information and Communication Technology involves students learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment.

To participate in a knowledge-based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society now and into the future, students need the knowledge, skills and confidence to make ICT work for them at school, home, work and in their communities. Information and communication technologies allow for efficient, automated, interactive and multimodal communication to many audiences in various contexts. They transform the ways that students think and learn and give them greater control over how, where and when they learn.

Students develop knowledge, skills and dispositions around ICT and its use, and the ability to transfer these across environments and applications. They learn to use ICT with confidence, care and consideration, understanding its possibilities, limitations and impact on individuals, groups and communities.

Music Year 7 Exploratory & Year 8-9 Elective Subject Overview The study of music includes:

• developing practical skills on a range of instruments, including the keyboard, guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel, drums and vocals;

• performing in front of an audience; • learning, and applying, the theory of music; • discovering the raw materials of music; • studying the characteristics, instruments and origins of different styles of music.

Music participation enhances problem-solving, teamwork, self-expression, coordination, memory skills, self-confidence and esteem. The formal study of Music has also been proven to benefit students in their study of the Maths and Sciences. As one of the Creative Arts, Music also releases the creativity within each of us as part of worship to God. During Music, students develop their knowledge of how ideas and intentions are communicated in and through music. They build on and refine their knowledge, understanding and skills through music practices. Each student will be expected to continue to learn an instrument or develop singing skills during the course. It is strongly recommended that students undertake Instrumental Tuition in conjunction with this subject. Students will be expected to practice their instrument regularly outside of classroom time, in addition to other assignments and homework.
