Welcome to Our New Staff Members

Calvary welcomes our own Can-dice Reed as our new Director of Childhood Ministries. Candice and her husband Christian have been members at Calvary for 7 years. She is the mother of Joseph, who will be graduating from Kindergar-ten soon! Candice has a real heart for chil-dren. Please pray for her and make her feel welcome as she begins this new time of ministry at Calvary.

We are excited to welcome Dickie Rhea as our new Ministry Asso-ciate. Dickie joins us on an inter-im basis and will assist in pastoral care, assistance with worship ser-vices, and planning and implemen-tation of ministries and programs here at Calvary. He and his wife Elizabeth are the parents of three grown sons, and happy grandpar-ents to Gwyn, Max, and Jesse.Pray for Dickie as he begins this new service.

Associate Pastor

Thank you again, Calvary, for giving me the opportunity to minister to our Lord through ministering to you.

On Wednesday nights this summer, we will be exploring Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life during our prayer meeting times. We will discuss the dis-ciplines, and consider how to put them into practice in daily life. Join us on Wednesday nights in the FMC at 6 pm.

Dickie Rhea

Prayer, Discipleship, Missions…I know, I’m repeating myself…but I’m convinced that if we’re going to be the Lighthouse that Christ has called us to be, these three elements of following HIM must be priority! *Wednesday nights – This is where we corporately call on HIM. More opportunities for prayer as a church will be coming your way soon. This connec-tion with the FATHER is the fuel that powers Calvary. We must ABIDE with HIM! Remember our next PRAYER EXPERIENCE on May 4 at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.

*Sunday Night Missions – Join us on Sunday nights in the FMC Activity Room as we continue looking at what it means to be a Missional Church. We are “Compelled by Love.” Look out for the month of July this summer! Coming to Calvary: SERVE ‘16!

—We’ll be going out into the community to do missions. Are you ready to GO?!—There will be projects going on all summer long. Come on Sunday nights to hear all about it!

*Discipleship Groups – Right now, around 15 men are being discipled in their faith, growing stronger in their walk with Christ, and being leaders where God has placed them. Starting in the fall, we’ll begin a new discipleship class. You’ll have the opportunity to develop a CLOSER walk with Christ by growing in these areas:

— How to Communicate with God through prayer—How to Learn to understand and apply God’s Word to your life— How to truly Obey God’s commands— How to Store God’s Word in your heart— How to Evangelize (share Christ with others)— How to Renew yourself spiritually every day

Want to go deeper in your walk with Christ than you’ve ever gone before? THIS is the perfect place for you to “Grow Up”. Look for the opportunity to sign up coming your way this summer!

The Story Behind the Hymn:“How Great Thou Art”

“O Lord, how great are Thy works!” Psalm 92:5

The hymn How Great Thou Art traveled a long road before it ended up a favor-ite edition to English hymnals. The original version was a poem written by a Swedish pastor, Reverend Carl Boberg in 1886, and entitled O Stor Gud. Boberg published the poem in his periodical Sanningsvittnet. Several years later he was surprised and delighted to hear his poem being sung by a church congregation, to the tune of an old Swedish folk melody.

Boberg’s poem was soon thereafter translated into German by Manfred von Glehn, who entitled it Wie gross bist Du. In 1925, an American Reverend E. Gustav Johnson translated the Swedish poem into an English version that is somewhat different than the one popular today. For instance, the first line of Johnson’s hymn reads “Oh mighty God, when I behold the wonder.”

In 1927, I.S. Prokanoff translated Glehn’s German version into Russian, to be enjoyed by that culture also. Throughout all of these translations, the original Swedish folk tune remained the same.

In 1933, English missionaries to the Ukraine, Reverend and Mrs. Stuart K. Hine heard the song for the first time, fell in love with it and sang it often through-out their missionary journeys. As they traveled the Carpathian Mountains, the couple was inspired by the incredible beauty to translate the first three verses of the song into English. When WWII broke out in 1939, the Hines returned to England carrying How Great Thou Art to its new home. After the war they wrote the fourth verse and arranged the original Swedish folk tune to be published in English hymnals.

In the 1950s, the song was copyrighted and widely published in America, becoming more and more popular. When George Beverly Shea and the Billy Graham gospel choir, directed by Cliff Barrows, began to sing the song at vir-tually every crusade event, How Great Thou Art soon became one of the most recognized songs around the world. It was also recorded by several popular art-ists, including Elvis Presley. A poll conducted by the Christian Herald magazine in 1974 named How Great Thou Art the most popular hymn in America.

I’m so excited to get started as the Children’s Director here at Calvary! Please know I am praying for God’s guidance in all that I do. With that being said, I believe some awesome things are going to take place as long as we allow God to direct us. Please try and make the parent/grandparent meeting on May 18 at 5:30 in A103. This meeting will be an insight as to how I feel God is leading me to grow our children and parents in the Lord. God is going to do some amazing things through our children! Seeking His will,Candice Reed

I guess I’m a little like Olaf...I love summer! Awesome weather lets us get outside and enjoy God’s creation! And summer is just around the corner!

Unfortunately, because of the extended time spent outside, I neglect the work indoors. Just ask my wife, Corey, who has to beg me to help (on second thought, don’t ask her!)! The yard looks great, and I can get outside to play, but I let the inside go (although Corey does not!).

ROCK is not taking the summer off! I know many families have vacations and excursions planned, as well as various other activities on our cal-endars, but let’s be encouraged to not neglect gathering together with the local church for worship and service. If our schedules are so busy that we feel the need to drop something for some time to relax, let’s keep this mindset: don’t let what we drop be corporate worship and involvement with the church. I am excited about ROCK’s summer plans! Although we have only two major events planned (MissionFuge and Super Summer), there will be lots of chances for students to hang out together for Bible study, worship, fellowship, and service.

Wednesday evening services will continue through-out the summer on campus, as will Sunday night Bible study (specific times and details to be announced). I plan to have several opportunities for students to serve on campus and off campus. And I’m looking forward to some impromptu wiffle ball games! In short, ROCK is not taking the summer off!

Continuing this summer!!
