Author Profile
Herman Melville (1819–1891) found early success with stories inspired by his adventures in the South Seas. His fortunes declined with the 1851 publication of Moby-Dick, now recognized as a masterpiece but scorned by Melville’s contemporaries. The author was obliged to work as a New York City customs inspector and died in obscurity, three decades before the critical reassessment of his work.

With the financial support of department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker, Baptist minister Joseph K. Dixon undertook the documentation of Native American life and lore during the early decades of the 20th century. The Wanamaker Expedition, from which this book and its illustrations originated, involved the filming and pho-tography of thousands of individuals from scores of tribes.

Author Profile
Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer. Nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, she received the Pulitzer Prize for The Age of Innocence in 1921. Wharton drew upon her privileged social position to create witty and psycho-logically insightful novels and short stories. She spent her final decades in France, and for her tireless efforts on behalf of World War I’s orphans and refugees she received the Legion of Honour.

Author Profile
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834) was a founder of the English Romantic movement and a member of the Lake Poets. Although less well known than his contemporaries Wordsworth and Shelley, he created an enormously influential body of poetry and literary criticism. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is his masterpiece.
Artist Profile
In addition to his work as an illustrator of classics, Hungarian-born artist Willy Pogány (1882–1955) served as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. He was also an author and teacher whose instructive manuals include Dover’s Drawing Lessons.

This deluxe edition of Mozart’s violin concerti reproduces the composer’s original manuscripts. In addition to the five pieces — Concerto No. 1 in B Flat, K. 207; Concerto No. 2. in D, K. 211; Concerto No. 3 in G, K. 216; Concerto No. 4 in D, K. 218; and Concerto No. 5 in A, K. 219 — this volume features two additional works, the Adagio in E, K. 261, and the Rondo in B Flat, K. 261a. Violinist Gabriel Banat has contributed two introductory pieces, one on Mozart and the violin and another on the history and importance of these specific manuscripts. The first edition of this work was published in a limited edition in 1986 and has been virtually unobtainable for many years. Author Profile
A native of Romania, violinist Gabriel Banat survived the Nazi occupation to perform throughout Europe and the United States. He is the author of Masters of the Violin, a six-volume anthology, and the rediscoverer of this autograph score, which was believed to have been lost during World War II and has since been declared by Isaac Stern as “of enor-mous interest and inestimable value.”
