SURFACE FINISHESAVAILABLEALUMINUM – CAST IRON –STEEL PRODUCTS

GROUND A smooth finish of 16 to 32 RMS*produced on state-of-the-art precisionsurface grinders by skilled technicians.This precision ground finish is mostcommonly furnished. It is ideal for

precision layout, gaging, inspection work andfacilitates the use of all types of calibrationinstruments. This finish provides accuracies intenths of thousandths (.0001”) in flatness,straightness, squareness and parallelism. Superfinishes of 8 RMS* or better can be provided atadditional cost.

HAND SCRAPEDAchieved by skilled artisans using both power andhand manipulated scraping tools, removing flakes ofmetal to provide a given number of spotting cavitiesper square inch. This finish is used on tools used forspotting and checking ways on various machine toolsand slides. It is normally furnished in two grades.

The overall accuracy of eachstraight edge is carefullyinspected and calibrated to insureit falls within the tolerancespecified. In use, straightness isdependent upon proper supportpoints for straight edges 60” andlonger. Use of these supportpoints minimizes the deflectiondue to gravity.

To check the accuracy of aproperly supported parallelstraight edge, indicate one edgeor face in the center; then turnthe straight edge over andindicate the opposite edge orface in the same manner. Anygravitational deflection shouldbe identical. By measuring thedegree of deflection, propercompensation can be made in anyalignment application.

To maintain precision tolerances,straight edges must be handledcarefully to avoid shock damage.In storage, they should be storedwith full horizontal support.Where possible, they should behung vertically with propersafeguards.

ALUMINUM, CAST IRON &STEEL PRODUCTS

CLEANLINESS is vital to insure a long and useful lifefor all types of precision equipment. It is alsoextremely critical to achieve accurate calibrationreadings from your instrumentation. Most importantis to keep the precision finished surfaces free fromdust, abrasive particles and chips along with thesurfaces on which the equipment will be used.

RUST AND CORROSION caused by moisture,humidity and perspiration are a continuing concernfor ferrous metals. Perspiration is particularlycorrosive because of the salt content. Equipmentshould be carefully wiped after handling. When notin use it should lightly oiled or coated with a rustpreventative. For extended periods of storage oflong-life rust preventative is recommended.

PERIODIC CLEANING of aluminum, cast iron and steelproducts with a specially formulated metal-cleanerpolish is recommended. BUSCH PRECISIONIndustrial Metal Cleaner with silicone appliedseveral times a year will keep precision surfaces freefrom corrosion and discoloration. Where corrosionhas started, this cleaner-polish will remove it,restore and protect the finish.

CAREFUL HANDLING is also critical to preserving theaccuracy of all precision equipment. Even seeminglyminor bumps or damage can disturb tolerancesmeasured in tenths. Equipment that has beendropped or otherwise subjected to a sharp blow orshock should be carefully inspected for surfacedamage and checked to determine if accuracy hasbeen affected.

RECONDITIONINGRECONDITIONING can be an economical approachto equipment that has been damaged or subjected toadvanced rust or corrosion. Whenever equipment isbasically sound it can usually be restored to like-newcondition at approximately one-half the cost ofreplacement.

Compacted by tremendous geological forces,granite comprises great density and highcompressive strength with a Rockwell C hardness of80 plus. In addition, years of extreme temperaturechanges have provided complete stress relief. Thisideal combination of hardness and stability make itpossible to produce and hand lap granite surfaceplates to precision repeat reading accuracies inthree grades:

While notsubject to corrosion, granite products must bekept clean and used on clean surfaces to avoidscratches and wear that can alter the precisiontolerances. An alcohol base Precision SurfacePlate Cleaner is recommended for regular usein maintaining the cleanliness of surface platesand accessories. The cleaner is packaged inquart and gallon containers.

WHEN NOT IN USE, surface plates andaccessories should be covered. Surface platesshould not be used for storage. Especiallyheavy objects can disturb the flatnesstolerance. As with all equipment used inclose-tolerance quality assurance, granite platesand accessories should be recalibratedperiodically to make certain the tolerances havenot been disturbed by damaged and wear. Thisequipment can be reconditioned as well.
