CALL TO MUSLIMS TO BECOME ANUMMAHFollowing is the gist of an important speechdelivered by Ma ulnn a Mohammad Yusuf Rahmatullahi-A l i i h ( R U A ) on 30th March 1965, three days before

his death, after Fajr Salat at Raewind. It was the lastimportant speech of his life. Maulmlrr Abdu l Az iz R U A(Khulna, Bangladesh) procured this speech toMaulaila Mohamrnad Manzoor Nornani R U A , editor Al-Fui-qalz. The complete speech is inscribed on twenty-six pages. The editor Al-Furqniz summarized it,keeping in view that no important portion is left out,and published it in Hazratji Number of his journal in1965.

After Hanzd-o-Salat, Mau lana Yusuf R U A startedhis speech, in a manner quit unusual for him, with

a few hundred thousand of them fell heavy upon thewhole world. There was not even a single cementedhouse. Even the masjid was not cemented . No lampwas lit in the masjid of Rasool S A W . The first lampwas lit in the masjid of Rasool S A W in the ninth yearof Hijrah. The first man to light up a lamp in thenrzasjid of the Rasool S A W was Tarfieem Dar i RAA, whoembraced Islam in the ninth year of Hijralz. But bythat time almost the whole Arab had entered intothe fold of Islam. Different nations, differentlanguages and different clans had become anUnzrnah. When all this had happened then only thefirst lamp was lit in the rnasjid of the Rasool S A W . Thelight of hidayah which the Rasool S A W bought withhim had spread all over the Arab and even beyond itand the Umrnah had come into existence. ThisUniniah then rose in the world and in whateverdirection it proceeded, countries after countries fellat their feet. This Urnmah was formed such that nota single person in it was siding with his family, hiscommunity, his party, his nation, his country or hislanguage, No one gave weightage to his wealth, property, wife and children, rather every one wasconcerned about the sayings of Allah and His RasoolS A W . An Urnmah comes into existence only when allthe relations and acquaintances are curtailed incase they come in the way of compliance to theorders of Allah and His Rasool S A W . When theMuslims were an Umnzah, the whole Unnmah wasshaken if a single Muslirn was killed anywhere. Nowthousands and thousands are massacred but noheed is paid.'Umrrzah' is not the name given to a nation orinhabitants of a specific region. Unification ofhundre ds and thou sands of nations and regions

forms the Ummah. Anyone who owns only aparticular nation or region and disowns others, slaughters the Ummah, tears it into pieces andnullifies the efforts of the Rasool S A W and hiscompanions RAA. First we splitted and t hu sslaughtered the Ummah, then only the Yahood an dNasara butchered into pieces the alreadyslaughtered Ummah. If the Muslims once againbecome an Ummah, all the powers of the world, joined together, will not be able to cause theslightest harm to them. Atom bombs and rocketswill fail to eliminate them. However, if due tonational and regional feelings, the Muslims continuesplitting the Ummah into pieces, then by Allah, yourweapons and armies shall not be able to save you.The Muslims are being beaten up all over theworld and loosing their lives since by loosing'Ur~z~iiat-hood'hey have nullified the sacrifices of theRasool S A W . I am expressing the feelings of anaggrieved heart. The disaster is there because theUiizrnnlz no fl more remained an Unimah. The veryconcept of an Unznrlah has gone into oblivion and sois the process through which the Rasool S A W formedit.

To become an Urnr~ahand for gaining thefavour from Allah, the existence of Salat , Zikr, nzadrasah and education in mndrawh is not enough. The killer of Ali RAA, Ibne Muljam, was such astaun ch doer of Salnt and rernemrence of AllaFi thatwhen the enraged mob, attempting to kill him, triedto slash his tongue he requested to be spared of itso that he could continue hymning the name ofAllah till his last breath. Inspi te of this, the RasoolS A W had said that the killer of Ali (RAA)would bethe most wretched and unfortunate person. Abul

Fazl and Faizi2 obtained the education in madrasahand were so learned that they wrote a commentaryof the Qul-all without any letter with a dot. But theywere the persons who misguided Akbar and ruineddcelz. How can the qualities, possessed by Ibne Muljam ,Abztl Fazl and Faizi, suffice for the formation ofUnzrnalz and draw the divine help of Allah?

Sha h Isrnail Slzaheed R U A , Syed Ahrnad ShaheedR U A and their companions3 belonged to the best lotfrom the point of view of deen. When they reachedthe frontier areas, people there, accepted them astheir elders. But then , the S ata n deluded some ofthe local Muslims not to follow them as they wereoutsiders and they provoked others for treason.Consequently, their numerous companions werekilled. The Muslinzs themselves shattered the 'Urnmat-hood on' the basis of regionalism. A s a punishment,Allah imposed the British rule upon them. That wasa wrath of Allah.2. Abul Fazl an d Faizi were two confident courtiers of the

Mughal Emperor, Akbar, who ruled India and floated a newreligion Deen-e-llahi.

    3. Mfiulann Shah Isnlnil Shaheed R U A (b1193H) was a renownedscholar from the famous family of Shah WAliullah RU A inDelhi. He crusaded for elimination of bidah and revival of thespirit of Islam in northern India. Later on he joined themovement of jihad under the banner of Syed Alzmad ShaheedR U A (b1201H) from Rae Bareilly against the tyran t u n-islamic rule in India. They raised a n army of Musli~nsandgathered in the no rther n frontier area of Indiansubcontinent, inhabited by the Muslinzs famous for theirmartial characteristics, with an intention to seek theirparticipation and then attack the un-islamic government. Atthe end, after a battle at Balakot, the Muslims lost due totreason of some frontier chieftains. Both Maulana Ismail RUA-and Syed Ahllzad R U A along with a large number of theirarmy personnel were martyred.

Behold, 'my nation', 'my region' and 'mycommunity' are the feelings responsible for thesegregation of the Umrnah. Allalt dislikes this somuch that when an esteemed Sahabi, Saad BinUbadah RAA, committed a mistake, which ifunchecked could have separated the Ansar an dMuhajreen, he had to face the consequences. It isquoted that he was killed by jins and a disembodiedvoice was heard in Madinah: .... 4?>\:;-& +:-.- L,>0 z.,~~L?&-'+'.-+ L*--" i ..This incident set a precedent and taught a lessonth at even if a person out of the best ones breaks the'Urrzrnat-hood', Alla h will not spa re him.

Unzmah will be formed when all classes in theUr~zrnah, without discrimination, take up the workwhich Rasoolullah S A W has entrusted. Andremember the evils of dealing and lifestyle are thethings, which spoil the 'Ummat-hood'. When anindividual or a class perpetrates injustice andatrocities upon others an d denies their full rights orputs them in trouble or humiliates and degradesthem, then the division takes place and the 'Urnrnat-hood' is lost. That is why I say that the Urlzrnah willnot be formed merely by Icalimah and t a s b ~ h . t willbe built by a reform in dealings and lifestyles and bypaying the rights an d respecting all. Rather it will beformed when one's own rights and interest aresacrificed for the sake of others . The Rasaal S A W ,Abu Bakr RAA and Urnal-RAA formed this Unirnlrh bysacrificing every thing they had and by undergoinghardships. In the days of Uinar RAA, once came ahuge amoun t, of the order of millions and billions.4. We have killed the chief of I

Consultations were made for its distribution. At th attime, the Ummah was in tact. The personsparticipating in the consultations did not belongmerely to a particular clan or class, rather todifferent clans and classes and were considereddistinguished because of their companionship withthe Rasool SAW. After mutual consultation, theyproposed that the distribution should be such thatthe sha re given to the people of the Rasool SAW'Sclan may be the largest, then to the people of AbuBnkr RAA's clan, then to those from Urnnr RAA'sclan. A s such the relatives of Umar RAA stood thirdin preference. When this suggestion was' placedbefore Urnar RAA he did not accept it and said thatwhatever the Urrzrnah got in the p as t and was gettinga t that time, it was because of the Rasool SAW.Therefore, the closeness in relationship with theRasool SAW should be the sole criterion. Closer onewas in family-lineage with the Rasool SAW more heshould get. In this way Bn~liHashim were to be giventhe largest share, then Barzi Abd Mnnaf then thedescendents of Qusni, then of Kilab, then of Ibab, then of Mun-ah. A s su ch the clan of Urnar RAA fellmuch behind and it's share drastically reduced. ButUrnar RAA adhered to the decision leaving his clanfar behind in receiving the share of the wealth. Thisis how this Umrnah was formed.

In order to form the Urnrrzah, it is essential thateveryone's efforts should be directed towards unityand avoidance of division. It is narrated in a Hadithof the Rasool SAW that on the day of reckoning aman would be brought who had performed Snlat,Saztnl, Haj and Tableegh every th ing in th e world. Buthe would be subjected to chastisement becausesome of his utte rances had created division in the

Ulnrnah. He would be told that first he shouldundergo the punishment for his word which harmedthe Ummah. On the other hand, there would beanother person who would have dearth of Sgllrt,Saurn and Haj etc. in his account and would bescared of Allah's wrath. But he would be bestowedupon with enormous rewards. He himself wouldenquire which of the deeds was fetching him thefavours. He would be told that on certain occasionhe uttered something, which prevented a possibledes truction in the Urnmah an d caused integrationand averted disintegration. All that was being givenas the reward for the word uttered by him.In the formation and deformation, integrationand disintegration of the Urnnzah, the greatest role isplayed by the tongue. It unites the hearts as well astears them away. A wrong utterance instigates aquarrel and complete disruption, while anotherutterance becomes a source of unity and joins thedisrupted hearts. Therefore, the most importantrequirement is to have a control on tongues. This ispossible when the slaves of Allah have a persistentconsideration th at Allah is present with them a tevery time and every place and listening to all theirutterances. There were two clans amongst the Ansar, viz.Aus and IGazraj. An age old enmity an d quarrelexisted between them. When the Rasool SAWmigrated to Madinalz and the Arzsar entered into thefolds of Islam, then by virtue of the Rnsool SAW andIslam, their age-old quarrel turned into mutual loveand affection. Seeing this, the Jews conspired tomake them once again hostile against each other. Ina gathering where persons from both the clans werepresent, a conspirator arrived and started recitingprovocative verses related to their old enmities. First

a hot exchange of words took place between themand then the swords were drawn out. Someoneinformed the Rasool SAW. He rushed to the placeand said, 'Do you intend to start a bloodshedamongst yourselves while I am present with you?'.He gave a very brief but touching sermon. Both theparties realized that they were instigated by theSatan. They cried and embraced each other and thefollowing verses of the Quran were revealed:

0 Muslims! Fear Allah as He should be feared andremain a perfect Muslim and obedient slave of Allahtill your last breath. When someone remembersAllah a t every moment and is afraid of His anger andpunishment and always obedient to Him, then theSatan would not be able to mislead him and theU~nmahwill be saved from division and evils.

the day of judgement, all those who would havestrived for these deeds will have shinning faces.Contrary to this, creating mutual enmity, jealousy, backbiting, slander, disgrace, humiliation and hear-burning, all these things cause a disunity anddisintegration and lead their doers to hell. They willhave their faces blackened on the day of judgement.

In these verses, themutual differences and quarrels have been termedas acts of Kufr and warning has been given forchastisem ent in the hereafter. At present the effortsis being made all over the world to shatter the'Urnnzat-hood'. The only remedy and antidote is thatyou get involved in the effort of Rnsool SAW. Bringthe Muslinzs to mosques. Therein talk of Imaan maybe given, Halaqas of Taleem an d Zikr may be arranged, consultation for the effort of deuz may be made.People from different classes, communities anddifferent languages may join these works on thepattern of rnasjid of the Rasool SAW. He is listening andlooking whether they are talking of integrating theUmmah or disintegrating it; backbiting, slandering orconspiring against anyone. This Ummah was formedwith the blood and starvation of the Rasool S A W .Now we are splitting it on insignificant accounts.Remember, even the grip for neglecting the Salat ofJummah will not be as strong as that fordisintegrating the Unzmah. If 'Ummat-hood ' comes inthe Muslims, they will never be disgraced in theworld. Even the powers of America and Russia willbow to them. backbiting; all these things break the 'Urrzmat-hood' *by creating a division. All these things areprohibited. Respecting and honouring each other, which unite the Ummah, have been enjoined. cExpecting ones own respect from others isprohibited because this dois not form the Urnrnahra ther r uins i t. Unzmah will be formed when everyonedecides about himself that he is not worthy ofrespect and therefore does not seek respect butgives respect to others considering them worthy ofit.

When self-sacrifice will be rende red then theUrnrrrnlz will be made up. When the Ummah will bemade up then the honour will be gained. Honourand dishonour are not in the frame of Russia andAmerica. But they are in the ha nd s of Allah an d Hehad laid principles and regulations. Any individual, nation, family or class, which follows the principlesand performs the deeds for shining, will be made toshine. Those adopting the path of destruction willbe punished.
