PRESS RELEASE
CALL FOR WORLD RECOGNITION OF LIBYA’S NEW INTERIM
NATIONAL COUNCIL AND GOVERNMENT
Wednesday 2nd March 2011
We call upon all national governments and international organizations to
URGENTLY and formally recognize Libya’s new interim council and government,
and to offer their fullest support to our brave Libyan people through recognizing
and engaging their legitimate interim leadership.
Over the past few days, amidst the dreadful bloodshed of our beloved Martyrs (May God
grace them with His infinite Compassion), we declared, on religious, moral, and human-
itarian grounds, the illegitimacy of the criminal regime of Gaddafi, his family, and associ-
ates, and stressed the necessity of rejection and total rebellion against it.
On Sunday 27th February 2011, we endorsed and supported the interim national council
and government announced by the Jurist Mustafa Abdel Jalil and various coordination
committees.
We are pleased and honored that a truly remarkable national consensus has now
emerged in full endorsement and support of the interim national council and government.
Here is an incomplete list of cities, towns, and organizations that have already declared
their support: Al-Asabi’a, Zuara, Garyan, Mahamid, Yafran, Janzur, Nalut, Zawia,
Khums, Aziziyah, Rajban, Hasawna, Qasr Bin Gashir, Zintan, Zelten, Jmel, Jado,
Tamzin, Misarata, Bani-Walid, Msalata, Ras Lnauf, Marsa al-Burayqah, Ajdabiya,
Jalu, Awjila, Kufra, Benghazi, Al-Marj, Al-Bayda, Derna, Tubruq, and Al-Jaghbub.
Many Divisions of the Libyan Army and Police have also declared their support,
and a military coordination council has been successfully formed. Muslim scholars
such as the Network of Free Ulema, and Sheikh al-Sadiq al-Ghriani have also firmly
endorsed the interim national council and government. Our youth who started this
remarkable transformation, through such youth networks as the Libyan Youth
Movement, also support this interim council and government.

Today, we again witness before God the legitimacy and authority of the establishment of
a new democratic government that is constitutional and that respects divinely endowed
and internationally recognized human rights, the peaceful transition of power, diversity,
an elected and clean government, the separation of powers (with checks and balances),
that sincerely and faithfully strives to serve the brave men, women, and children of Libya
with transparency, piety, and devotion.

_____________
ABOUT THE NETWORK OF FREE ULEMA – LIBYA
We are a network of some of Libya’s most senior and most respected Muslim Religious Scholars
with various specializations and tribal backgrounds from across our beloved Libya. Our network
also includes some of the most respected Sufi Teachers in our country. Some top Judges, Lawyers,
Doctors, Engineers, University Professors and Intellectuals, as well as Writers and Poets, are also
members. Our network includes both men and women, old and young, locally educated and ed-
ucated-abroad. We are not a political party, and our only agenda is that of upholding the highest
religious, spiritual, moral, and human values, and the service of our beloved Libya. We are diverse
groups of different schools and outlooks, and we believe in the richness of plurality, and the wisdom
of dialogue and communication with all other faiths and cultures. Our network is only one dimen-
sion of Libya’s very rich and sophisticated Civil Society, which has always been there, but has had
to go clandestine for many years because of the regime’s repressive policies. In the New Libya,
all these seeds will sprout into a rich and vibrant culture, unified, and mutually respectful. For the
time being, security conditions do not allow us to publish a list of members. We will publish such
a list as soon as we can.
