■ IntroductionAPRICOT ‐APAN 2015 will be held over the 11 day period from February 24 through March 6, 2015 in Fukuoka, Japan.

The APRICOT conference has been held annually since 1996 with the goal of sharing the knowledge requiredThe APRICOT conference has been held annually since 1996 with the goal of sharing the knowledge required to build and operate the rapidly expanding Internet infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region.  The conference regularly brings up to 800 regional network providers and operators from over 40 countries together to discuss recent technology trends and develop business partnerships across the region.

APAN operates a backbone network that connects the research and education networks of its member countries/economies to each other and to other research networks around the world. The organization began its activities in 1997 and now provides an academic research platform extending from backbone network to advanced application research. The APAN Meeting is held twice annually bringing together 300 researchers from over 30 member countries in the AP region.

Two international conferences held simultaneously in the same venue, sharing joint plenary sessions and social events  and bringing together the Internet infrastructure, research, academic, service provider, user, and policy communities of up to 60 countries in the Asia‐Pacific region offer sponsors a unique opportunity to introduce their services and develop human and business relations across the AP region.

The two events were combined  with great success for the first time in Hong Kong in 2011 with over 1,100 attendees from 61 countries and 40 sponsorship organizations involved. 2015 in Fukuoka represents a second opportunity to benefit from the shared strengths of the two communities.

I look forward to your cooperation in making APRICOT‐APAN 2015 an event to remember.

■ APRICOTThe Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) is a forum for key Internet builders in the region to learn from their peers and other leaders in the Internet community from around the world.  Singapore hosted the first APRICOT in early 1996 and the Conference has since been held on an annual basis in various countries around the region.  Throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim, Internet service providers, backbone and regional networks, web hosting facilities, firewalls, and Intranets are being created, deployed, and installed at a staggering pace. The technicians, managers, entrepreneurs andcreated, deployed, and installed at a staggering pace. The technicians, managers, entrepreneurs and decision‐makers responsible are under tremendous pressure to master the skills necessary to build and operate these increasingly complex systems. The ten day long conference consists of seminars, workshops, tutorials, conference sessions, birds‐of‐a‐feather (BOFs), and other forums all with the goal of spreading and sharing the knowledge required to operate the Internet within the Asia Pacific region.

The overall program content adapts on an annual basis to the pace of change in the region however the core consists of hands‐on technical training workshops (recent topics include BGP routing , networkcore consists of hands on technical training workshops (recent topics include BGP routing , network management, network security, etc.), tutorials (IPv6, DNS/DNSSEC, WiFi, MPLS, Handling DoS attacks, IP Address Resource Management)  and conference sessions that focus on recent research directions, trends in standardization, network management  and measurement, service provision etc. providing a platform for f h d b b h k f hinformation exchange on a region wide basis. APRICOT brings together network operators from the entire

AP region  allowing coverage of peering trends, introductions to ISP and IX providers and a face to face forum for negotiation and development of new business relationships.

APAN (Asia-Pacific Advanced Network)http://www.apan.net/

Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) refers to both the organization representing its members, and to the backbone network that connects the research and education networks of its member countries/economies to each other and to other research networks around the worldits member countries/economies to each other and to other research networks around the world. The organization began its activities in 1997 and now provides an academic research platform extending from backbone network to advanced application research .

APAN Meetings are 5day events held twice annually providing a venue for the reporting, sharing and evaluation of network research activity on the APAN backbone network. Working Group activities range from network research, protocol and security technology to advance applications covering remote medical, agricultural and sensor technologies.

Participating in the APAN Meeting allows not only a view of advanced network technology but also an understanding of how ultra high speed networks will continue to play a role inalso an understanding of how ultra high speed networks will continue to play a role in changing daily life in our society in the near future. This source of information, we believe is of great value to carriers, content and service providers in planning their future business strategy.

Extending a Network Research Backbone to A i lt l d M di l A li tiAgricultural and Medical ApplicationsInternet research covers a wide and varied scope. APAN is widely recognized as a backbone network for advanced academic research on network technology and protocols however its activity is not confined onlyadvanced academic research on network technology and protocols however its activity is not confined only to basic network research. From its outset, one of APAN’s distinctive activities has been centered around agricultural applications of network technology. Crop production demands a continuous understanding of the state of the land used for cultivation. This requires earth monitoring and sensor networking technology. G t h l i l d t i th t t d t th th h i thGenome technology is employed to raise crops that can stand up to the severe weather changes in the region. Finally big data analysis allows an understanding of agricultural market trends. APAN has been conducting research in this space on a region wide basis for over 15 years.

Application of network technology in the medical field is another of APAN’s unique activities. The US and Europe have similar consortiums connecting national research networks to form a regional educational backbone and are similarly active in the medical application area. What makes APAN’s activities unique is the presence and participation of medical professionals currently active in the medical field. Their needs p p p p yand requirements are being fed directly to APAN’s network researchers allowing a wide variety of active and continuing experimental medical activities over the APAN backbone network.

In this manner APAN is utilizing its education network backbone to conduct research on a level equivalent

1616

In this manner, APAN is utilizing its education network backbone to conduct research on a level equivalent to the international standards of Europe and North America and is achieving results and providing output to the AP community on a consistently high level.
