Essay Competition for High School Students in the State of Utah
Event: Sustainable Energy workshop for high school student in the state of UtahTopic: Sustainable Energy for Mountain Communities.Organizers: Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), Utah Valley University, and Orem Public Library Date: Friday, March 30, 2012, 2 PM – 6 PM.Place: Orem Public Library
In recognition of 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, the aim of the UIMF essay competition and workshop is to reach out to the high school students of the region and to inform them of the energy problems that exist in mountainous regions around the world. An additional aim is to suggest how they might become part of the global mountain community working on these issues under the umbrella of the United Nations sponsored agenda of Sustainable Mountain Development.
There will be two parts to the student workshop: 1. Presentation from special speakers and members of the UIMF to the high-school students about programs and activities supported by the U.N. concerning the issues that are present in the mountainous region of the world for their future involvement and participation. 2. Presentation of the best research papers by high school students on the subject concerning the topic on agenda.
Topics for student essays might include any or a combination of the following: Types of alternative energy
o Hydroelectricityo Solar energyo Wind energyo Geothermal energyo Bio-energyo Others
Cost of developing sustainable energy. Environmental impact of energy production. Defense of fossil fuels sustainability. The impact of climate change on mountain communities Other points related to the topic.
Requirements for student essays: 5-7 pages in length, double spaced. Word document with 1-inch margins. Include page numbers and bibliography. Should include a variety of references (books, journal articles, with a limit of five online
resources; Wikipedia does not count!)
A panel of judges will read submissions and select finalists to present their papers at the workshop. A monetary prize will be awarded for the top three papers. All participants (schools, professors & students) will be awarded by special certificates of participation on behalf of the United Nations-related Mountain Partnership in Rome, Italy.
