Call for Papers:

“Who Remembers the Armenians: The Art and Politics of Memory and Denial”

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Critical and Visual Studies

Program at Pratt Institute will host a Conference titled, “Who Remembers the Armenians: The Art and

Politics of Memory and Denial,” in collaboration with the Armenian Genocide Program at the Center for

the Study of Genocide and Human Rights (CGHR), Rutgers University.

Memory, Denial and Art are cultural productions. This conference will incorporate them with political

and social scholarship and research. Alongside the historical, political, archival research for

documenting massacre, loss, and dispossession, artistic production has played a significant role in the

representation of the Armenian Genocide—and the Turkish state’s denial—in Turkey, Armenia, the

Armenian diaspora, and beyond. The 100th anniversary provides an opportunity to highlight,

incorporate and critically examine this role. To this end, we invite scholars and artists to submit

abstracts of papers that discuss and conceptualize political, social, historical, and theoretical debates,

and examine cultural productions focusing on historical inquiry, social, cultural and legal implications,

artistic production, contemporary dialogue, and collaborations dealing with the memories of genocide.

Confirmed keynote speaker is Professor Taner Akcam, the Robert Aram, Marianne Kaloosdian and

Stephen and Marian Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies of Clark University.

The deadline for submission is December 22, 2014. Please email abstracts not longer than 300 words

alongside participant’s CV and the special requirements of the presentation to

conference1915@pratt.edu. Accepted papers will be announced by the end of January, 2015. The

organizers will provide meals and public transportation between Manhattan and Pratt Institute,

Brooklyn.

The two-day conference will take place on May 1 and 2, 2015.
