CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS | Publication THE EMBODIMENT OF RESISTANCE | Abstractsubmissions: 15 July 2013CENTRE FOR CULTURAL STUDIES | Goldsmiths, University Of London

THE EMBODIMENT OF RESISTANCEThe recent democratisation of culture has led to a boom in the creative industries. With new

technologies assisting multiplicity as well as monetisation, cultural production has come under theonslaught of neoliberal doxa, giving rise to artists, academics and activists creating their own forms ofresistance. But what are the markers of resistance? Can the modes of cultural production becomeacts of resistance? When does the act of capturing an image, the act of singing a song or the act ofwriting become forms of protest? Could these individual acts be mobilised into self-organising formsof education aimed at resisting, challenging, dismantling existing disparities in the distribution ofpower within society?Developments in social media mean that users are no longer passive consumers. The relationbetween public opinion and understanding facts has undergone a new perversion blurring theboundaries between production, reproduction and consumption. We propose to examine how newmedia lends a tone of protest to conventional modes of cultural production, in a time when eachperson creates their own narrative of history.

The publication will pose these questions and bring together various forms and examples ofembodiments of resistance. It will collect essays, images, and reports of different moments whenactions translate into resistance. The aim is to build a collage of text, images, actions, art, protestsand in the end resistances to reimagine society.
