Did you know that all four typesof volcanoes on earth (CinderCone, Shield, Composite andPlug Dome) are represented inLassen Nation Park?

Cinder cone volcanoes are formed from explosiveeruptions where materials spew high in the air and cool

    before they hit the ground.

Shield volcanoes (Prospect Peak) are formed by frequent, quiet eruptions and are much larger in width than in

height. As smooth lava flows build up, a dome shape isformed.

Composite volcanoes (Brokeoff Volcano) are very large

and are formed from alternating explosive eruptions andquiet eruptions. This results in layers of ejected material

    covered by smooth lava flows.

Composite volcanoes are usually symmetrical in shape andcan be as high as several kilometers.

History: Catalina Island has served as thelocation for the filming of over 500 motion

pictures, documentaries, and commercials inthe past 90 years. Why have so manyproduction companies flocked to the Island

during this period? The Islands unique beauty and accessibilitywere the major factors. Production crews andsets could be sent to the Island by barge and

the vast, untouched mountains and beaches

could be transformed into almost any place in

    the world.
