In an industry where many companies designate equipment, fabrication and installa-tion needs to outsourced contractors and subs, RCO Tile & Stone sets itself apart by cutting out the middle man. Doing the work themselves is what allows RCO to con-tinue offering the same high grade quality they have been known to provide. RCO
owner Kelly Mann believes the combined ability to bring customers “transparent results with direct design, sampling and installation under one roof,” is arguably the most advantageous aspect to RCO Tile & Stone. In his words, it is “simplicity with a
guarantee at highly competitive pricing.”

Maintaining this belief in simplicity, RCO Tile & Stone keeps things only partially automated when it comes to their equipment. This choice was employed to avoid potential equipment failures due to machines with higher technology. Their 25 employees are all local individuals and families who love the trade. It is through their extensive background paired with modern cutting and edge machines that creates such an efficient working relationship.
Visitors to the 6,000 square feet showroom are treated to complete kitchen and bath showrooms. From cabinets to flooring and everything in between, it is the residential and commercial remodeler’s dream. Offering a variety of surface alternatives, wood grain and paint grade diversity, creative lighting choices and the like, the options are made limitless.
Staying on trend with modernized needs, RCO Tile & Stone has seen a rise in popularity for “built proof” materials such as porcelain resembling different natural products. The benefit lies in the fusion of the aesthetic appearance and the increased functionality. More specifically, there is a porcelain resembling wood without needing the maintenance
actual wood requires; and there is marble-looking porcelain that does not stain and can withstand both heat and harsht cleaners. According to RCO Tile & Stone Estimator Nicole Gallier, this is what makes the material a prime choice for kitchen countertops, floors and showers.
Adding more insight into contemporary trends, Mann describes “new exciting species of granite and quartz countertops, embellished by lighting and integrated sound.” He further explains how using a tasteful albeit planned blend of colors and textures ultimately create “inspiring results.”
With RCO’s reputation for quality, efficiency, timeliness and affordability, it is their team that keeps their trustworthy repertoire. Having their in-house workshop grants them the ability to offer more control in terms of project management. As such, they continue to operate as a family business, and it clearly shows in their generous heart-driven care for a client’s finished product.

Whoever penned the whole “grass is greener on the other side” phrase would add disclaimers for synthetic grass if he or she were still around today. And as far as our modern, first-world worries go, synthetic grass is the hassle-free answer to a proper-ty owner’s aesthetic and cost-effective concerns. Especially true for California residents, the combat for more environmentally conscious options is made simpler with this choice.

WHEN THE GRASS IS GREENER ON YOUR SIDE OF THE FENCEGOING SYNTHETIC
8 CALIFORNIARENOVATION MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2016 CALIFORNIARENOVATION MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2016 9
Synthetic grass, despite its name, has a certain attraction upon closer inspection. Chuck Seaton, the RCO Artificial Grass Creations Operations Manager, describes it as “grass that’s carefree maintenance, green all the time and picture perfect 7 days a week, 365 days a year.”
Having worked in construction for most of his life, Seaton knows firsthand the varying concerns most clients have in regards to their landscaping. When asked how it compares to real grass, he says, “I wouldn’t say it feels the same, but it looks pretty much identical.” That being said, as far as touch is concerned, it remains fairly comparable if someone were to actually lay on it. Easing pet owner concerns, dogs also seem to enjoy its heat retention properties. The turf holds up even
in dog training facilities -- and as a bonus, the animals don’t seem to find it edible!
RCO offers 41 different styles in varying blade thickness, pile heights -- some even have padding! Certainly adding to a property’s value, all maintain its lush posterity regardless of weather conditions. Given California’s persistent drought, Seaton admits, “People need to really start paying attention to water conservation. There’s a way to be more eco-friendly... We’re a part of that solution -- maybe not the whole solution but part of it.” As the Sacramento SGW distributor, RCO boasts their product quality (with warranties far exceeding the competing norms) and it’s the eco-friendly individual’s dream. Naturally, there’s no fertilizer or watering
required for upkeep and there are no issues with leakage.
Specific aspects are considered for each client, but the one Seaton advises to keep in mind is how much money you’re willing to spend on initial costs. The lawn pays for itself in the long-run given it requires little more than a leaf-blower to maintain. However, Seaton invites interested individuals to do their research. The fundamental commitment to both high grade service and quality products is what instills such confidence in RCO experts and keeps clients coming back for more.

ROSEVILLE & ROCKLIN CARPET ONE STORES OFFER THESE SUGGESTIONS:
CONSIDERTHEOPTIONVARIETIESThe density of your hardwood flooring is essential in your selection process. Be aware of the warranties offered per manufacturer and the time span for coverage; typically this can range anywhere from 10-50 years. In a nutshell, considerations to keep in mind include wood species, texture, finish, hardness, colors and board widths.
WOODSPECIESWith such a wide range of wood species, there are many with differing textures, feel and colors. From the softness of pine to the hardness of Brazilian Cherry, density can certainly be a factor. Availabilities vary depending on the wood type.
A GUIDE TO HARDWOOD FLOORINGHardwood flooring, when done well, offers a lifetime of durability and use. As one of the oldest flooring choices, its longevity comes as no surprise. Naturally, of course, this is dictated by several considerations.
@flooring
All of this being said, wood floors add a warm depth to a home and it brings with it a wonderful texture, says RCO’s Kelly Mann. It is a beautiful detail that brings timeless style for future generations to enjoy.

BEAUTIFUL FLOORING
12 CALIFORNIARENOVATION MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2016 CALIFORNIARENOVATION MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2016 13
When you cross the threshold of a residence for the very first time, there are usually several items simultaneously competing for your attention. Flooring is one home aspect immediately attracting the optic senses. Of course, people will notice when an area rug has been beautifully selected and strategically placed because it complements the situating room (or rooms) perfectly. One might even say -- at least in certain circumstances -- area rugs have the ability to make a room look whole with one final touch.
Al Solario, RCO’s Flooring Specialist, advises those in the market for an area rug to consider your household’s particular lifestyle and how you live within the space you’re envisioning said rug. If you’re looking for something to provide a comfortable leisure space, your needs are going to be different from a space simply needing a “neutral backdrop.” Likewise, those looking for an accent rug versus someone searching for a “furniture placemat” -- these needs are different. As such, the approach to finding the right match will be entirely different as well.
The surface area underneath the rug is another aspect Solario suggests clients bear in mind. If it’s a slippery surface, placing non-skid pads underneath the rug is a good idea. One other consideration comes in size choices. Particularly in dining areas, be sure the rug is large enough for pulled-out table chairs.
Carpet One’s own Frankie Torrente says the process of picking out an area rug mostly comes down to personal preference. Having had clients pick out striped rugs for a room with paisley furniture, Torrente offers a warning about clashing patterns. He suggests clients with patterned furniture to stick with solid colored rugs.
“Through our experience, RCO Flooring Outlet has developed an alternative for area rugs designed to fit the needs of our clients,” said Kelly Mann, CEO of RCO Flooring Outlet. “We have committed to inventory a large selection of remnants and roll stocking items, in solid colors, prints, patterns, in nylons, wools, in sophisticated looks to choose from. All can be cut to the size needed for your application.”
Offering over 50 different patterns, additional solid color choices and custom binding colors, the Flooring Outlet has an approximate 48-hour turnaround rate as opposed to the average competitor’s 7-10 days. In addition to the expedited turnaround, Carpet One also has incredible savings, usually about 20% to 60% off of what a normal special order could run you.
“The remnants we have in inventory ready for work, along with the manufacturing capability in-house allows us efficiency and cost savings that pass on a tremendous value to our customers,” explained Mann.
When asked what the most challenging aspect is in choosing a rug, Torrente believes it to be a fairly cut and dry operation, “You just find one you like.” It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

8 TECHNOLOGIES YOUR HOME NEEDS NOW
@A/V
The “smart house” used to be an idea that was reserved for the future, technology that would take years to develop and even more years to become main stream in the home. Fast forward to 2016 and most areas of smart home technologies are available now. A recent survey showed 2 out of 3 of real estate agents & builders found homebuyers are now more interested in “smart homes” and automation technology than ever before.
In fact, those surveyed believe smart home features and automation technology will be commonplace in most new home construction and retrofit remodels within the next 1-3 years.
One such technology in high demand is the use of invisible speakers and camouflaged video displays, hidden behind
mirrors and walls, controlled with a touchscreen remote or mobile devices.
Both touchscreen and mobile device control systems now include voice-operated technologies which are becoming more standard (Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Echo being at the forefront).
Imagine using your cell phone to control your home’s temperature, preselect lighting settings, pipe music throughout the house or record your favorite shows.
The Wall Street Journal reported on February 17, 2015 “The race to automate part, or all, of the American home was on display last month at the combined International Builders Show and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas.
HERE’S A LIST OF THE HOME TECHNOLOGIES MOST IN DEMAND ON DISPLAY AT THIS YEAR’S INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW:
