anaturallyoccurringsubstanceextractedfromtheseedpodoftheAsianopiumpoppyplant.Heroinusuallyappearsasawhiteorbrownpowderorasablackstickysubstance,knownas“blacktarheroin.”

• PrescriptionopioidpainmedicationssuchasOxycontinandVicodincanhaveeffectssimilartoheroinwhentakenindosesorinwaysotherthanprescribed,andtheyarecurrentlyamongthemostcommonlyabuseddrugsintheUnitedStates.Researchnowsuggeststhatabuseofthesedrugsmayopenthedoortoheroinabuse.

SyntheticCathinones• Syntheticcathinones,morecommonlyknownas"bathsalts,"aresynthetic

(human-made)drugschemicallyrelatedtocathinone,astimulantfoundinthekhatplant.KhatisashrubgrowninEastAfricaandsouthernArabia,andpeoplesometimeschewitsleavesfortheirmildstimulanteffects.Syntheticvariantsofcathinonecanbemuchstrongerthanthenaturalproductand,insomecases,verydangerous.

• Syntheticcathinonesusuallytaketheformofawhiteorbrowncrystal-likepowderandaresoldinsmallplasticorfoilpackageslabeled"notforhumanconsumption."Alsosometimeslabeledas"plantfood,""jewelrycleaner,"or"phonescreencleaner,"peoplecanbuythemonlineandindrugparaphernaliastoresunderavarietyofbrandnames,whichinclude:

MDMA

• 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA)isasyntheticdrugthataltersmoodandperception(awarenessofsurroundingobjectsandconditions).Itischemicallysimilartobothstimulantsandhallucinogens,producingfeelingsofincreasedenergy,pleasure,emotionalwarmth,anddistortedsensoryandtimeperception.

• MDMAwasinitiallypopularinthenightclubsceneandatall-nightdanceparties("raves"),butthedrugnowaffectsabroaderrangeofuserswhomorecommonlycallthedrugEcstasyorMolly.

• Ecstasy/Molly

Methamphetamine• Methamphetamine isacentralnervoussystemstimulant

drugthatissimilarinstructuretoamphetamine.Duetoitshighpotentialforabuse,methamphetamineisclassifiedasaScheduleIIdrugandisavailableonlythroughaprescriptionthatcannotberefilled.Althoughmethamphetaminecanbeprescribedbyadoctor,itsmedicalusesarelimited,andthedosesthatareprescribedaremuchlowerthanthosetypicallyabused.Mostofthemethamphetamineabusedinthiscountrycomesfromforeignordomesticsuperlabs,althoughitcanalsobemadeinsmall,illegallaboratories,whereitsproductionendangersthepeopleinthelabs,neighbors,andtheenvironment.

Cocaine• CocaineisapowerfullyaddictivestimulantdrugmadefromtheleavesofthecocaplantnativetoSouthAmerica.Althoughhealthcareproviderscanuseitforvalidmedicalpurposes,suchaslocalanesthesiaforsomesurgeries,cocaineisanillegaldrug.Asastreetdrug,cocainelookslikeafine,white,crystalpowder.Streetdealersoftenmixitwiththingslikecornstarch,talcumpowder,orflourtoincreaseprofits.
