Large Projects: The dollar volume of large projects accounts for much of the month‐to‐month fluctuation in non‐residential building. Large projects are defined here as $ 5.0 million or more in construction cost. The largest project in June 2015 was a new $88.3 million, 41‐story, 217‐unit multi‐family building with parking and retail space in the City of San Diego. [Projects marked with an asterisk (*) were not included in the valuations report due to the nature of the construction]. Large projects for other building permits issued in June 2015 were:

Employment Trends
California’s Construction industry averaged 722,600 employed persons in June 2015, up 5,700 from May 2015. The unemployment rate for the State of California employees in June 2015 was 6.2%, indicating no change from
the previous month. The U.S. unemployment rate was 5.3% in June 2015, decreasing by 0.2 from May 2015.

Building Classifications Notes and Definitions
Building permit data is compiled from building permits issued by cities and counties. The building classifications used in
grouping the building permit data of the preceding tables are as follows:
Residential:
Single‐Family housing units include detached, semi‐detached, row house and town house units. Multi‐family housing
includes duplexes, 3‐4 unit structures and apartment type structures with five units or more. Each type of housing is
included in this report with its corresponding valuation.
Residential Alterations and Additions include alterations, additions and conversions to existing residential structures.
(Excludes special installation permits for electrical, plumbing, heating, air‐conditioning or similar mechanical work,
installation of fire escapes, fire sprinklers, elevators, signs, etc.)
Total Residential includes a sum of total construction valuations from the categories: New Single Family Valuation, New
Multi Family Valuation and Residential Alterations and Additions combined.
Non‐Residential:
New Commercial includes new hotels and motels, office and bank buildings, stores and other mercantile buildings,
parking garages, service stations, and amusement and recreational buildings.
New Industrial includes manufacturing plants and affiliated buildings.
Other New Non‐Residential includes churches and religious buildings, medical and institutional buildings, school and
educational buildings, agricultural buildings, and miscellaneous Non‐Residential structures. Hospital construction
permits issued by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning are not included in the private Non‐Residential
building data contained in this report except where the project may also be permitted by the local jurisdiction.
Non‐Residential Alterations includes alterations, additions and conversions to existing Non‐Residential structures.

HVAC installations are sometimes not acknowledged independently from other mechanical permit valuations depending
upon the reporting municipality and therefore, cannot be tracked with complete accuracy.

According to the U.S Census Bureau a metropolitan and micropolitan statistical area(s) (metro and micro areas) are
geographic entities delineated by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for use by Federal statistical agencies in
collecting, tabulating, and publishing Federal statistics. A metro area contains a core urban area of 50,000 or more
population, and a micro area contains an urban core of at least 10,000 (but less than 50,000) population. Each metro or
micro area consists of one or more counties and includes the counties containing the core urban area, as well as any
adjacent counties that have a high degree of social and economic integration (as measured by commuting to work) with
the urban core.
