Happy Great 2008! What a great year it will be for CBC! Last year came and went in what seems like a blink of an eye. The year of 2007 brought much success to that of the California Brittany Club members as well as their dogs. Last year brought forth champi-ons, along with young pups that eagerly await their chance to make their mark. This year should prove to be nothing less. In fact we shall have an even better year. As usual, there will be many events as in the past. Events to enjoy are the Spring Field Trial, the Hunting Test, the CBC Specialty, the Awards Banquet, the Willi Match, and the Fall Field Trial. With

your support we hope to have continued success with each one of these events. There is a new edition this year on the event calendar. This year is our year to be the honored hosts of the ABC Summer Spe-cialty. This honor does not happen every year so that makes this year a little more special. With everyone's contin-ued help and support, this year will be a fun and exciting year. I would like to thank Bill Landress for all his dedication to our club. I know I can call on him for his expertise as I take on the new Presi-dential position. I along with the whole CBC wish him the best of luck in his new position as the Western Regional Di-rector.

I would like to wel-come the new members and encourage all mem-bers to get involved one way or another. Every little bit counts and every small gesture goes a long way. We appreciate everyone's continuing efforts and hard work to make this a productive and suc-cessful club. The Willi Match on September 5th at Rush Park was a

great success. This year we had over 75 people attend the match. The weather was hot but not as bad as last year. It was great to have so many new faces as well as some new juniors. It really was a fun club day.

The day started off by getting our motor home to the Park at 6:30am so that we were sure to get the right spot for our event. The set up went very smoothly and the ring and displays went up without a hitch with the hard work of Joe Ramon-detta & Rodger Kibbie. At 8:30am Nancy Hewitt did the Grooming and Agnes Rodrigues did the Handling seminars. The seminar was fantas-tic and several people watched

care-fully as they learned how to groom and show their dogs. Thank you so much ladies for sharing your

tion after the Willi Match. It would be great if we could get that picture in the Brittany Magazine to show how strong the CBC is. Thanks to everyone for bringing their favorite dish to the Willi Match. The food was great and we had plenty for everyone. There was a little bit of everything on those tables. Next year for the Willi Match we are going to do registration on line. This will help greatly in getting eve-rything ready for the Willi Match. The date for next years Willi Match has not yet been determined but the membership will be keep advised as to the future date early in 2008. I hope that everyone had a fun day

at the Willi Match. This type of event really makes the CBC stand out as a pre-mier Brit-

tany club.

talent at the Willi Match. A special thank you goes out to Rozanne Woelm and Helen Harbour for han-dling registration. Again this year they did a fantastic job. What would we do without those two la-

dies? This year, at regis-tration, we added three new CBC member-ships. Rozanne was also respon-sible for securing the per-mit for Rush

Park, what a great place to have the Willi Match - Thanks. It was a real pleasure to have Professional Han-dler Kathy Grayson as our judge this year. She really took the time and provided guidance to the jun-iors and amateur showman. A very special thank you goes out to Kathy & Rodger for volunteering her Sun-day for to help the California Brit-tany Club. This year after the Best of Breed competition we did a group picture that was taken by Rich Harbour. The picture came out great. I hope we can make that an annual tradi-

for the All Age course, and Sheri Harder for the Gun Dog course, made sure that their respective courses had water for dogs and horses, and that judges had every-thing they needed. Linda Dixon and Cindy Leffingwell, bird planters for each course, made sure there were birds in likely objectives.

Sabrina and Greg Arney got the mornings started with coffee and other assorted treats. They also made delicious lunches for the judges and workers. Their efforts, and menu selection, were appreci-ated by the hungry crew and judges who enjoyed every last bit of food! They did an awesome job!

Paul Doiron pulled the club trailer to the site; Bill Landress and a group of helpers, got the club tent set up so folks could enjoy their meals out of the wind

The dinner on Saturday was an ex-tended “happy hour” hosted by the owners of the seven dogs being hon-ored. Many were concerned if our trial was going to hap-pen at all when

the dreaded Santa Ana winds brought a firestorm of devastation to Southern California. By the time of the trial, most of the fires had been extinguished, and we were moving forward with the event.

Our trial was open to all pointing breeds in each stake, and we ran more than 110 dogs during the two-day affair. Several participants expressed delight that many of our judges were new for us, and they liked having some new “faces” watch our dogs in action. Of the twelve judges, two were from Northern California, two from the Bakersfield area, one from Arizona, with the remainder being more local. In the Open Puppy stake, one of our club members, Sabrina Arney, was com-pleting her “apprenticeship” and will be able to take future assignments. We thank our judges for the long hours spent on the road, and the long hours spent in the saddle. We appreciate you for your willingness to donate your time to a great sport.

The event was truly a TEAM effort. Myra-Dawn Ellis, the computer “guru”, jumped in to prepare the running orders and get the bracings up on the club website. In addition, she also designed the cover of the official running order, honoring our seven new champion dogs.

Our “course managers,” Ed Dixon

finger foods and appetizers, the celebrants treated everyone to a full-blown “seven” course meal. (One for each dog honored!)

To take the celebration one step further, we had a “chili cook-off.” Not just the usual chili, but concoc-tions that were unusual and taste-tempting. Three of our judges, Jeff Davis, Russ Settell, and Lynda-Sue Swart opted to taste the chil-ies and selected two winners: Ellis Herz and Eldon Bouchie/Sally Jor-dan. It was great fun to watch the judges taste the goodies and then discuss their findings. They practi-cally ate all the chili before naming their winners!

Thanks to all club members, volun-teers, and judges for making our event so successful. Should I have forgotten to mention anyone by name, please forgive the omission, but know that I sincerely appreci-ate everyone and their efforts. The trial couldn’t have happened without YOU!

Letter from the Editor By Sharon Kalionzes Happy 2008 to everyone! We have an enthusiastic and hardworking new Presi-dent ... a knowledgeable, hardworking board, and a host of wonderful volun-teers! The new year looks to be a suc-cessful one in the making. We have a year full of exciting competitive and fun events to look forward to, and I person-ally hope that many of our newer mem-bers will get involved with the club and

volunteer to help. It’s a wonderful way to meet new friends, learn about how events are put on, and how much fun it is to participate with other Brittany enthusiasts. Don’t be shy ... we ALL LOVE HELP!!! Best wishes for everyone’s success in putting new titles on their dogs in show, field and other performance events. I

Is this an active breed? Are they hy-per? What

were they bred to do? …and so on for 2 days at the 2007 Eukanuba Championship, Meet the Breed, held on Dec. 1 and 2 in Long Beach, CA. What an opportunity to share with hundreds of people about Brit-tanys!

On the Friday before, Helen Har-bour met me to decorate the booth with the support of items from Bob and Rozanne Woelms and Nancy Hewitt. We set up a hunting theme using Nancy’s beautiful Brittany tapestry as a background, Bob’s hunting vests, shirts, caps, whistle, his replica “toy” shotgun, and his stuffed quail won as a field trial trophy. Rozanne added fall foli-age for our table which was decorated with stuffed, toy game birds, as well as stuffed Brittanys and the children’s book about Charlie the Little Brittany which you can purchase to support rescue. A DVD lent by Karen Stout was shown con-tinuously so people could see our dogs in action at Gun Dog Na-tionals. Diane Dale made cer-tain that we had rescue infor-mation which was added to the ABC magazines, brochures and pamphlets available about our breed, as well as about local clubs and events. A few extra touches were added to complete the colorful, eye-catching pres-entation.

On Saturday, the booth was ably manned by Sheri Harder, Diane Dale, two juniors, Harvey and Hailey Bickett and me. “Risa”, CH Wind-song’s Time of My Life; “King”, DC Quail Rock’s Tough Enough; “Ranger”, Lone Oak’s Smokin’ Masked Ranger; ‘Spirit”, Maestra’s Freedom on the Run and “Khai”, Cop-ley Beach Party Cayucas, happily met the public answering the ques-tion about activity level by showing off their retrieving skills in the aisle. Sunday saw the booth well-manned by Mary Brown, Sharon Kalionzes, Nancy Hewitt and Harvey Bickett. “Pebbles”, Shiloh’s Babbling Brook; “Ticker”, Hope’s Every Heart Beats

Eukanuba - Meet the Breed Linda McDonald

True; “Ellie”, CH Swift River’s Des-tiny’s Child JH OA OAJ and “Khai” enjoyed greeting the crowds. When a quail escaped from the cocker spaniel booth down the aisle, Peb-bles demonstrated her natural pointing instinct which impressed many of the visitors. Although, it was absolutely worth the time and energy of the volun-teers to educate people about our breed, the focal point was on the dogs that showed everyone what our breed is truly about. They stood out in the aisle to greet the public with tails wagging, toys in their mouths and points on the local wildlife. So, that was how Eukanuba met the Brittany!

CBC Treasurer’s Summary 2007

This was forwarded to me via Linda Langford.... “Some CBC members may know Marion and her Vizsla and her beau-tiful horse (who always wore the purple trimmings).” A member of our community

It is with profound sadness and a very heavy heart that I bring the following news to you. This morning early, we lost Marion Bulin to a rap-idly advancing form of cancer. Ste-ven Carney, her fiancé, requested that I send a note to those who knew Marian. Regards, Nancy Colwell

Our sincerest sympathies go out to Ed and Linda Dixon on the passing of their son, Eddie Dixon. We in-clude Eddie’s family, and that of his sister Shannon Renfree, husband Brad, daughters Amber, Dakota and Madison Renfree. A tragic accident took him too soon ... but with the strong Christian faith of the fami-lies, peace will come in His time. Our prayers are with you all...

Dear Membership, As you might already know the CBC is hosting the 2008 Summer Spe-cialty Show in May at the Pomona Fair Grounds. It is being held on the same weekend as our own CBC Spe-cialty Show. We have taken on a tremendous work load but we feel a rewarding one. One of the pro-jects we decided to pursue is really nice Sweatshirts, T-Shirts and totes that are being offered to help offset the huge expenses that an undertaking of this magnitude incurs. For those of you that have not yet ordered or received your CBC fash-ions, please let me remind you that

the Sweatshirt and T-shirt are of the finest quality and are pre-shrunk, washable and dryer safe. $35.00 and $25.00 respectively. They are sand color (to represent our beaches) and come in all sizes. The tote is a heavy duty canvas and is also $25.00. All have the Sum-mer Specialty logo. Please see pic-ture. We have some sizes, as well as totes, ready to go right now. Any-thing else can be ordered and re-ceived within about 2 weeks. Ship-ping, of course, can be saved by good timing on orders and events. All proceeds will be used to offset expenses. Helen Harbour and I will make our-selves available for or-

ders and delivery to the best of our abilities. We are pretty centrally located and plan to be at several upcoming events. Place your orders with Rozanne Woelm 562-706-2403 or Helen Harbour 562-743-7914. E-mail to [email protected]
