HISTORY California was first explored by
Europeans in the 16th century. It was colonized by the Spanish during
the 18th century. In 1821 the territory of California
became part of Mexico. In 1848 the U.S. claimed California and
in this year the gold rush started, bringing loads of americans to the west coast.
The transcontinental railroad linked California to the rest of the U.S. in 1869.
