Calibration does matter

Calibration Definition:

Calibration is the comparison of a meter with a well know reference (calibration rig) and if necessary adjustment in order to obtain a correct reading.

Compensate for:• Zero offset

• Gain error

For proper, credible calibration you need to have a good reference

=> The rig must be accredited

Accreditation, What‘s it all about

Accreditation is the formal recognition of nationalgovernmental authority to execute a specific service

Examples of Accredition Bodies are:

METAS (Switzerland), NMI (Holland), A2LA (USA)

Accredited organinsations may be:

material testing labs (TÜV, Lloyds etc.) or even private companies

The Procedures for Laboratory Accreditation are defined in ISO17025

Endress+Hauser Flowtec is accredited as a flow calibration laboratory by METAS and A2LA

Accreditation, What’s it all about

Accreditation is the key to transparency, confidence and comparability and it should eliminate international trade barriers.

Together with the accrediting body the uncertainty and traceability of the measuring chain is established

Measuring uncertainty claims coming from non accredited calibration rigs are generally regarded as not credible.

E+H aims to have technical solutions (specs) and accreditations based on ISO 17025, in all production and service centers world wide!

Calibration Methods

Primary Calibration Secondary Calibration

Weight scale Flying-Start-Stop (diverter)

Master meter

Weight scale Standing-Start-Stop (inferior)

Secondary methods inherently have higher uncertainties than any primary calibration method. Reproducibility of master does add to uncertainty.

Advantages of a Water Tower with Overflow

Absolutely stable conditions during the entire calibration

No pump pulsations

No entrained air in the water

No pressure changes during calibration

No differences in compressibility of the water between DUT and scales (masters)

No regulation of the flow rate during calibration

No level measurement

Influence on calibration accuracy

Gravimetric

kg

Vol/d

How big is the influence of the surrounding air on the reading of the scales? Make a guess.

Answer: approx. 0.1%!!!

This must be compensated by the calibration rig in order for the meters to be within the specs.

Promass is used as „Transfer standard“ at BIPM

Because of highest accuracy and repeatability PROMASS was selected as the transfer normal for inter comparison test of national metrology institutes

Target of this inter comparison test was to determine the uncertainty of the calibration stands of these national metrology institutes.
