Youth Graduate From 4-H Tractor Operator Program
A new program took place in Calhoun County this winter, a Tractor Operator Program for youth. Successful completion of the 4-H Tractor Operator Program provides a certificate of training from the U.S. Department of Labor required for operation of a 20 PTO HP or greater, garden or agricultural tractor, by 14 and 15 year old youth to operate over the road and are employed on property not owned, leased or operated by a parent or legal guardian. Certification is also utilized by youth who exhibit and participate in local con-tests, parades and festival activities. Some of the educational topics in this in depth program include: farm/ranch hazards and safety, tractor component basics, pre-operational procedures, operation basics, tractor-powered implements, self-propelled agricultural equipment, operating on public road-ways, basic maintenance and repair, ATV/utility vehicle safety, first aid and emergencies. Youth spent 9 weeks learning about the operation and safety of farm equipment. They then were tested with a written test, pre-operational check test, and a driving test. The 4-H Tractor Operator Program is a major investment of time, but is one of the most valuable experiences we offer that teaches young people safety and job skills to last a lifetime. Nine youth from Calhoun and Jackson Counties completed the program and passed all of the required testing to receive their Certificate of Training from the U.S. Department of Labor. These youth worked hard through the 9 week program to ensure they were learn-ing the material and were capable of operating tractors and other farm equipment in a safe manner. This was the first year for the program, but Calhoun County 4-H hopes to offer it again in the future. Michigan State University 4-H Youth Development is available to all youth ages 5-19. For more information on the Calhoun County 4-H Program, contact MSU Extension office at 269-781-0784.
