Movie: CLAIRE’S CAMERAA refreshingly sunny performance from Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher, Elle) in this comic idyll from South Korean Master Hong Sang-soo. Huppert plays Claire, a school teacher with a camera (that might be magical) on her first visit to Cannes. She happens upon a film sales assistant, Manhee (Kim Minhee), recently laid off after a one-night stand with a film director (Jung Jinyoung). The unlikely pair become detectives of sorts, as they wander around the seaside resort town, working to better understand the circumstances of Manhee’s firing. Movie: DISCOVER ARTS: HITLER VS PICASSO AND THE OTHERSIn 1937 the Nazi regime held two exhibitions in Munich: one to stigmatize “degenerate art,” and one, personally curated by Hitler, to glorify “classic art.” Narrated by Toni Servillo, Hitler vs Picasso and the Others is an incredible journey through four exhibitions, displaying masterpieces by Botticelli, Klee, Matisse, Monet, Chagall, Renoir, and Gauguin. Linked to each exhibition are moving stories of those who witnessed the systematic destruction and looting of the day – from the Bernheimer family, who were forced to barter their freedom, to “Hitler’s dealer,” Cornelius Gurlitt, known to have hidden away some of the most priceless art treasures of the century. Movie: LEANING INTO THE WIND: ANDY GOLDSWORTHYSixteen years after the release of the groundbreaking film Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time, director Thomas Riedel-sheimer has returned to work with the artist. Leaning into the Wind follows Andy on his exploration of the layers of his world and the impact of the years on himself and his art. As Goldsworthy introduces his own body into the work it becomes even more fragile and personal and also sterner and tougher, incorporating massive machinery and crews on his bigger projects. Movie: NOVEMBERIn this tale of love and survival in 19th century Estonia, peasant girl Liina longs for village boy Hans, but Hans is inexplicably infatuated by the visiting German baroness. For Liina, winning Hans’ requited love proves incredibly complicated in this dark, harsh landscape where spirits, werewolves, plagues, and the devil himself converge; where thievery is rampant; and where souls are highly regarded, but come quite cheap. With alluring black and white cinematography, Rainer Sarnet vividly cap-tures these motley lives as they toil to exist. Is existence worth anything if it lacks a soul? Special Event: PAUL DE JONG: YOU FUCKEN SUCKERLive Music: Friday, April 13 at 7:00pm.In celebration of the release of his sophomore solo album, “You Fucken Sucker,” Paul de Jong invites you into his musical diner where everybody gets an earful: a menu of emotional acrobatics with the aid of cellos, or what used to be cellos, a bottomless library of exotic americana, absurdist sound and video snippets, mismatched costumes and hats, fake teeth and moustaches. Dutch cellist and composer de Jong is probably best known as cofounder of beloved collage-pop eccentrics, The Books. After the band’s breakup in 2011, he embarked on a journey of musical, literary, and visual discovery. $12.50 general / $10 members & students.

Special Event: THE PROGRESSION ENSEMBLELive Music and Discussion: Friday, April 20 at 7:00pmThe Progression Ensemble will premiere six brand new works written for them by six different composers. The ensemble consists of guitarist Eric Despard, cellist Michael Gilbert Ronstadt, and accordionist Rocco Anthony Jerry (who has performed at TSL twice before). Two composers will be present to discuss their new works: Dr. Michael Dilthey and Bjorn Bolstad Skjelbred, who will be flying in from Oslo, Norway to host the concert. Travel funding provided by The Norwegian Society of Composers, the Foreign Office of Norway, and Southern Vermont College. $9 general / $7 members and students.

Join us for snacks and refreshments as we launch the TSL Book Space. The Luck of Friendship: The Letters of Ten-nessee Williams and James Laughlin chronicles the unlikely, yet enduring, literary and personal relationship between the celebrated playwright and the founder of New Directions, which serves to this day as Williams’s publisher. Join the book’s editors – Peggy L. Fox, former president and publisher of New Directions and Tennessee William’s last editor, and Thomas Keith, a consulting editor for New Directions – for a reading and discussion, moderated by Kevin Sessums, former executive editor of Interview and contributing editor of Vanity Fair. The TSL Book Space is managed by Karen Schoemer and assisted by Lucas Miller.

Movie: AMERICAN SOCIALIST: EUGENE VICTOR DEBSThe contemporary political movement to address income inequality in America began over 100 years ago with Eugene Victor Debs. American Socialist traces the history of American populism with the man who inspired progressive ideas, from FDR’s New Deal to Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign. Here is an objective and passionate history of the movement as founded and championed by Debs, a movement that continues to impact our lives today. 2017. 1h37m.

Using letters Anna Magdalena Bach wrote to her husband, seminal composer Johann Sebastian, filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet created one of the most precise, rewarding biopics ever put on screen. Movie: THE DEATH OF STALINThe internal political landscape of 1950s Soviet Russia takes on darkly comic form in a new film by Emmy award-winning and Oscar-nominated writer-director Armando Iannucci (In The Loop, creator of HBO’s Veep). In the days following Stalin’s collapse, his core team of ministers tussle for control; some want positive change in the Soviet Union, others have more sinister motives. Their one common trait? They’re all just desperately trying to remain alive. Movie: THE RAPE OF RECY TAYLORRecy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother, was raped by six white men in 1944 in Alabama. In the Jim Crow South, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Taylor, however, bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. The film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story. The 1955 bus boycott was an end result, not a beginning. 2017. 1h31m.

Met Opera Live in HD: Massent’s CENDRILLON [met premiere]“Glorious,” raved The New York Times when Joyce DiDonato sang the title role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in 2011. “Her performance was thor-oughly enchanting.” Now, for the first time ever, Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with DiDonato starring in the title role.
