Club Spotlight BOR-BAND OF RUNNERS
The BOR has grown into
a large group with a
tremendous amount of
running knowledge and
experience
THE “BAND OF RUNNERS” (BOR) WAS BORN out of Team 13 training in 2005. At the time, Dave Baumeyer sent out a weekly running route every Friday for those who wanted to continue to run on Saturday mornings once Team 13 was over. One week, Dave asked if in his absence I would fi ll in and send out a route. e rest is history.
As the email list grew longer, the need to make some sort of change became more evident, thus the “Band of Runners” Blog was developed. is Blog provides a website for everyone to get the weekly route, sign up for a water stop, (which are covered on a volunteer basis every 3-4 miles), get information on upcoming events, and see where everyone is racing. Each week, we put out a route anywhere from 12-20 miles. We try to mix it up and include all parts of town. July through October, we incorporate the YMCA “Team 13” training run into the route, with mileage before and after if needed. e majority of the group are either volunteers or pacers for the YMCA Half Marathon. e last two years, we have also incorporated River Run training into the Saturday routes, as well. We also try and recap the last weekend racing action with photos and provide info for upcoming running and non-running events in the area. Occasionally, we’ll post a guest race report from a recent race. Each year in November, we do a “5kan” run on a Saturday morning. We encourage runners to bring canned goods for donation to a local food pantry. We also have an Annual Christmas Party/
Toy Drive in December after a Saturday run with breakfast at Lamasco. Everyone that wishes to can bring an unwrapped toy which we then deliver to the Downtown YMCA to be distributed as needed. e BOR has grown into a large group with a tremendous amount of running knowledge and experience. We have all paces and distances covered, from 5Ks to ultra-marathoners. I receive regular requests via email from runners who have come across the Blog or have been referred by others, who are coming in town for the weekend and looking for a group to run with, or a suggestion for a good place to log some miles. I feel our group provides an enjoyable running experience. Our numbers will fl uctuate through the heavy race seasons, but it seems eventually everyone always fi nds their way back on Saturday mornings to the front of the Downtown Y.

OCTOBER 31, 2015
Prior to the race, three flags will be given to participants. Zombie zones will feature zombies in quick pursuit of runners’ flags, hoping to capture them and
“drain their brains”. Obstacles will challenge participants as they run the course.
Time does not matter, but participants need to progress as quickly as possible
before the undead claim them as one of their own. There also will be a Brain Drain Zombie Blood Bash EXPO at the Grimes Haus on the USI campus.
C .Race begins 3 p.m.

FINAL WORDS
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defi nes “EPIC” as - extending beyond the usual or ordinary especially in size or scope. Turn on the TV and you will see people doing EPIC things. There will be a news report or story about people around the globe completing endurance events or achieving physical goals others thought were impossible. What you may not know is that people right here in the Tri-State are doing things just as amazing and inspiring. Here are just three examples:
DO SOMETHING EPIC!
All three of these feats are mind-boggling to even the fi ttest among us. They show us that IMPOSSIBLE and CAN’T are just words. I believe that EPIC goes beyond world records or historic fi rsts. EPIC is relative to the individual. Each one of us is capable of completing our own EPIC achievement. We all can conquer something that we told ourselves we could never do.
For me, two things come to mind, running a marathon and learning to swim. When I was 70 pounds overweight, not able to run to the corner, and fearful of being in the water, in my mind these two achievements were on par with summiting Everest or getting a chance to walk on the moon. They seemed impossible. Hard work and not giving up made them both happen. I would like to challenge each and every one of you to fi nd your own EPIC. Shoot for something you thought impossible. Learn to swim, drop some weight, scuba dive, or complete a 10k.
Find your own EPIC and get busy chasing it. I promise that both the journey and the reward of reaching it will be worth every minute.

Marathon River Swim – Last September Je Williams and Patty Winck completed a marathon swim in the Ohio River. A 26.2 mile swim from the Newburgh Lock and Dam to Downtown Henderson.
Marathon Checklist – This year Michelle Walker fi nished a several year journey to run a sub 4 hour marathon in all 50 states, and run a marathon on all 7 continents.
Iron Cowboy – In June, James Lawrence, aka The Iron Cowboy, came to Henderson, Kentucky to complete his 17th Ironman distance triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) in a row on his way to 50 Ironmans in 50 consecutive days in 50 States. A world record done to raise awareness for childhood obesity. www.IronCowboy.com
