SAT, APR 21, 10:30 AM250 YEARS OF THE MODERN CIRCUSDr. Vanessa Toulmin, Curator of Engagement and Director of the National Fairground Archive at Sheffield University, U.K., will offer a global outlook on the development of circus culture in Europe and America over the last 250 years. Though the origins of the circus can be traced back thousands of years, the modern circus, defined by a ring and a horse, dates from 1768 when Philip Astley, a retired cavalryman, showcased “feats of horsemanship” in his riding school in London. ViewPoints are made possible in part through the generosity of the Lester E. Bessemer and Mary Tilley Bessemer Endowment and the Siemer Family Ringling Museum Education Endowment.
