PRINCIPALS REPORT

It was lovely to see the majority of students in their winter uniform

for school photos last week. This year we have decided to change

companies to Advanced Life School Photography. For those parents

that decided to utilise the online payment system, I have heard good

reports of how easy the process was.

Recently we have had both our Senior and Junior parent teacher

nights. It was fantastic to see so many parents and carers come to

meet and converse with their child’s teacher. Due to our increasing

enrolments and interest, we may have to look at having two different

nights next year to cater for the amount of parents. This is wonderful

news and we look forward to meeting more parents next year.

Due to the busy nature of schools, I would like to request that if a par-

ent wishes to see a particular teacher or executive member that they

call ahead to make an appointment. This is best practice to avoid dis-

appointment in a particular staff member not being available for what

could be a number of reasons, including being on class or in another

meeting. Front office staff will ask for a name, suitable time and what

the meeting is regarding. I ask that you please comply with this re-

quest.

Lastly, we recently had students compete at the regional cross coun-

try in Gundagai where we had four students qualify for state. These

students were Sarah Vickery, Mia Geddes, Alice Langley and Brandon

Hall. Sarah and Brandon came first in their age groups making them

Riverina Champions and Mia placed 2nd. This is a great achievement

for these students and for our small country school. Well done!

With two weeks left until the upcoming holidays, I would like to wish

all of our students a safe and happy holiday break.

Kyle Bryant Principal.

Chess Knockout

Term 2 has been a busy time for our Chess team in the Country Secondary Schools Chess

Teams Competition. After losing to Yanco Ag HS in Term 1, NHS entered the repechage

and were drawn to play Tumut away from home first up.

We travelled to Tumut and met some friendly opponents, who we then engaged in fierce

competition. In a titanic struggle back and forth, NHS emerged victorious 3-1 to progress

to the next round.

We then drew Marian Catholic College from Griffith, in a home game for us. In an unfortu-

nate turn of events, Marian could not travel to Narrandera so we organised to play over

the internet on laptops. After our young guns Jack and Ted both won and team captain

Lucas lost, it was all up to Krit as Marian held the tiebreaker in the event the match fin-

ished 2-2. In a timed game we set at a generous 3 hours (as no one plays for that long…) it

came down to a mad dash with Krit playing his last 3 moves inside the final 6 seconds on

his clock, getting the checkmate with 1.4 seconds to spare. This meant a 3-1 win and pro-

gression to the next round.

We have now drawn another home game against Finley HS, with the match to be played

before the end of term. There are only 11 schools in the entire Riverina (including both

government and non-government high schools) still competing in this event, which is a

great achievement for our school.

Pictured after our victory are team members Jackson Mars, Krit Jitgaroon, Lucas Burton and Ted Ostler.

Drama

Shakespeare Carnival

“Recently a group of our talented Drama students from years 9 and 10 competed in the regional Shake-

speare Carnival, entering in three categories: ensemble, mash-up and short film. Our students were for-

tunate enough to win the film category and will compete nationally in Sydney with their wonderful short

film version of Hamlet.

The ensemble group chose two scenes from Twelfth Night which told the story of a young woman ship-

wrecked on a foreign shore who must pretend to be her own brother to survive , it was a hilarious and

entertaining comedy. The mash-up was a reinterpretation of the classic play Romeo and Juliet. The stu-

dents changed the names of the characters to teenage girls Roma and Julie and explored the effects in

the modern interpretation of the issues. The film was a modern interpretation of Hamlet filmed in and

around Narrandera with many students joining the cast in this funny and ultimately tragic story. All

groups received excellent responses from the judges and applause from the audience.

Congratulations to all the talented students who competed!”

Miss K Hopping.

North West Equestrian Expo

Coonabarabran Alice and Kate Langley recently travelled to Coonabarabran to compete in the North West

Equestrian Expo which was held from Friday June 1st to Tuesday June 5th. Over 400 riders

from secondary schools around NSW travelled to Coonabarabran to compete in this

event. Both Alice and Kate competed in the eventing, pentathlon, show jumping, dres-

sage, six bar, sporting and the active expo ride. Kate successfully placed 4th in the Eva 95

eventing out of a field of 13 riders, Kate then went on to make it to the last round of the

six bar, with the smallest pony where the set height was 1.30m and placed 2nd with her

team. In the show jumping Kate placed 8th in the A2 show jumping (fastest and clear

round) with 30 riders in her class. In the expo ride Kate placed 2nd. It was Alice’s last

event on her horse Phoenix whom she had owned for over 5 years. She placed 7th out of

a field of around 30 in the pentathlon which included show jumping, a cross country run,

a bike ride, javelin throwing and a bending race. She successfully placed 10th out of a very

strong field in both her dressage tests. However, Phoenix and Alice performed very well in

the bareback class, winning the 17 years. Both Alice and Kate are excited to return to

Coonabarabran next year.

read sheet music. They are currently learning how to play the

Australian song 'Waltzing Matilda' and have done a great job

so far!

Year 9 Food Technology

Year 9 Food Technology have been learning about different age groups and

their specific nutritional needs. They prepared and cooked macaroni cheese.

The class appreciated the higher quality of this home cooked dish in compari-

son to the quick ‘mac and cheese’ version.

NRL Open Girls League Tag Gala Day

On the 18th May a group of Year 8, 9 and 10 girls travelled to Leeton

to compete in the NRL Open Girls League Tag Gala Day. We competed

against teams from West Wyalong High School and Wade High School

and unfortunately, we were knocked out and did not continue on to

the final round. Considering some of the girls had never played

league tag before, and with input from assistant coach and experi-

enced player Janaya Irving Williams, the girls performed extremely

well. Some standout students on the day were Jacinta Smith, Zoey In-

gram and Jakaila Warren who received the player's player award and

a prize from the NRL.

Open Girls Netball In the heavy fog and cold the Open Girls Netball team travelled to Albury on the 14 th of

June to compete in the Riverina Secondary Open’s Netball Knockout. With a few late with-

drawals due to injuries from State Cup and a really bad hill start we managed to depart

Narrandera and arrive safely in Albury.

In our first game against Tumut in the blistering cold we were a bit slow to get going but

the girls worked hard around the circle and to get the rebounds despite lacking considera-

ble height. The second half saw some good short, sharp passing through the centre court

to bring the ball down to our shooters. Unfortunately the girls went down 16 to 9 goals.

The second game saw us take on Griffith High School and secure our first win of the day.

We played a much more controlled game with some excellent feeds from Lucy and Ivy in-

to Jacinta and Jade. Jacinta found her form in this game with some lovely shots out wide.

Ange and Alexa worked tirelessly in defence producing many rebounds and turn overs.

The girls won this game 16 goals to 9.

In our third game we played a very strong and tall Finley side. We fought hard in this game

and our relentless defence produced several turn overs and intercepts. Despite our efforts

we went down in this game and Finley High School went on to win the knockout. Thanks

to Ella Wickes for umpiring on the day.

AFL Gala Days Our AFL Gala days were off to a slow start this year when the year 7 and 8 Gala day was

cancelled when a number of other schools had to pull out of the competition, which saw

a lot of disappointed students, however, we had more luck with the U15’s competition

which enabled many of those 7 and 8’s to get their matches.

The U15’s day was held on May 25th with the boys playing at the Griffith Exies Oval and

the Girls at Collina Oval also in Griffith. Both teams played incredibly well with a mixture

of wins and losses. The boys went down to Wade High by only 2 goals in a very close

match, then were able to back up against RAP team and came away victorious leading

into the final game against St Francis. This game proved much tougher competition with

their spirits down at half time with a large score deficit, they were able to regain their

confidence in second half and restrict their opponents scoring. The girls also played cou-

rageously all day but were unable to come away with a win. Our players player for the

day were Dylan Johnson and Brooke Hall.

After many emails between a number of schools the Opens Teams were finally able to

confirm a date and with very short notice we were able to get 2 teams together to go to

Leeton and the 12th of June to play at the showgrounds. With St Francis, Wade and Nar-

randera the only schools able to field a side, both our girls and boys had 2 games each.

With no bench our teams played well and didn’t give up throughout their matches, with

both teams playing St Francis in the first game and coming to the realisation that we

could have benefited from a few more training runs. Soon it as time for our second

games against Wade. With sides being more closely matched our teams were able to

show a bit more of what they’re capable of with some great play by all, and a stand out

performance by Brooke Hall being chosen as the player’s player in the girls. The boys had

another close match with Wade going down by 2 goals yet again after leading at half

time. After some strong performances all round the ground, in particular Shaun’s ruck-

ing, Busters running, Connor’s new found glory in the forward line the player’s player

went to D’Andre for his tiresome effort in both games.

Well done and thank you for all that were involved in the 2 days especially those that

came to help out with goal umpiring and running water, they were very enjoyable days as

a staff member to be a part of.

Thanks

Mr Davies, Miss Hopping and Mrs Donaldson.
