Principal’s Corner Dear Fisher Parents,

Every year in early May, our district sponsors a distinguished employee event recognizing teachers and staff nominated by their peers for outstanding service. In addition, those who have dedicated years of service are also acknowledged for his or her dedication to students and the community.

I am pleased to share that Fisher Middle School was well represented this year with two Distinguished Teacher Awards, multiple Golden Apple Awards for years of service, and a bittersweet farewell to two Fisher stars about to embark upon retirement in June.

Our most sincere congratulations to…

Celeste Gitthens, our esteemed mathematics department chairperson and seventh grade math teacher, for her well deserved recognition as a LGUSD Distinguished Employee.

Jane Herberich, our amazing French teacher and Guided Study student support person, for her recognition as a LGUSD Distinguished Employee, and a Golden Apple Award recipient for her 30+ years of service. Sadly, Jane will be retiring this year leaving very, very big shoes to fill.

Marilyn Esparza, our extraordinary Spanish teacher, for her Golden Apple Award recognition acknowledging her 25+ years of service to Fisher students. Mrs. Esparza will also be retiring this year. We will miss her dearly, but we are certainly wishing her well in this next exciting chapter of her life.

An additional shout out to Karen Briones, our health clerk, who received recognition for her support of Safe Routes to Schools, Maureen O’Hara, our school nurse for her Golden Apple Award recognition, and to Ella Leonard who was again acknowledged for the CA League of Middle Schools Educator of the Year Award she received earlier this year. Wendy Riggs, a former Fisher parent, was recognized as the LGUSD Volunteer of the Year. We thank her for her service to Fisher and her support of our popular Fisher Dodgeball event.

We are very proud to have each of these amazing educators on our Fisher team, and we appreciate each of them for their unique contributions within our school community.

Sincerely, Lisa Fraser, Principal

The Growth Mindset Revolution:

How to Improve Learning in School and Life _____________________________________________________________________

Learn: ● The latest brain science that sheds important new light on the best ways to learn. ● How supportive learning environments emphasize mistakes as essential for growth.   ● Techniques that support inquirybased math and help students develop the

growth mindsets that will help them in school and in life.

In recent years scientific studies have demonstrated that student and teacher ‘mindsets’ have a profound impact on                                 learning. Students with a ‘growth mindset’ (Dweck, 2006) who believe that intelligence and ‘smartness’ can be                               learned and that the brain can grow from exercise learn more effectively, displaying a desire for challenge and                                   showing resilience in the face of failure. Such behaviors encourage greater math persistence, engagement and high                               achievement.   Bio: Dr. Jo Boaler is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and cofounder of                               youcubed.org . Former roles have included being the Marie Curie Professor of Mathematics Education for                           England, a mathematics teacher in London comprehensive schools and a lecturer and researcher at King’s                             College, London. She is the author of eight books including “The Elephant in the Classroom” (2015) and                                 “Mathematical Mindsets” (2016). She is the recipient of the Presidential National Science Foundation Award                           and the NCSM award for equity. She is also the author of the first MOOC on mathematics learning for                                     teachers and parents, a White House presenter and an advisor to several Silicon Valley firms.  The Parenting Continuum is a community alliance empowering parents to nurture the whole child and                             the whole family by focusing on K12 parent education. We are a group of volunteer parents who bring                                   awareness, support, and resources on all aspects of family life. ART SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

Visit lgef.org or find us on Facebook and Twitter. For general questions, e-mail us at [email protected].

LGEF: Serving Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue, Lexington, Van Meter, and RJ Fisher schools since 1982.

Sprint to the Finish: See How Just $100 Can Keep Student Programs Fully Funded LGEF science, music, art and social-emotional learning programs and resources touch every K-8 student in our district. However, due to the shortfall of $36,000 in donations this year, they are not all fully funded. Yet, if all student households do their share and support our schools with just a $100 donation to LGEF today, we sprint across the finish line together and ensure our students have the programs and resources so critical to a great education. And with school about to wrap up, this is the last chance to make it happen!

As additional support, our businesses and community members are also on the track to help take the baton to the finish. Here are a few of the latest examples:

x Sereno Group of Los Gatos selected LGEF to be it’s “1% for Good” recipient from May-August. In this program, Sereno Group has pledged to give 1% of its gross commissions to LGEF, so, together, we can continue to make a positive difference in the community.

x Whole Foods Market-Los Gatos selected LGEF as its “Nickels for Non-Profits” recipient. Each time shoppers bring reusable bags, they can choose to have a nickel for each bag donated to LGEF from May-July.

x Silicon Valley Gives: Yesterday, LGEF was a charity in this local event aimed at making it easy for community donors to support their favorite charities. To give our community more incentive to give to LGEF, our district’s own McEnroe family put up $4,000 dollars in donation-match funds.

Still, even with the generous financial support of local businesses and our community, our student body is so large at over 3,300 children that it takes the support of all district families to see our programs across the finish line. “Sprint to the Finish” for the students of Los Gatos: Donate $100 at LGEF.org today or mail a check to LGEF, 17010 Roberts Rd., Los Gatos, CA 95032. Thank you for supporting LGEF!
