ILL CHILD POLICY Regular school attendance is necessary for optimal learning. However, a mere presence at school does not ensure effective learning. A child must be feeling well in order to maximize the learning experience. In addition, a child who is sick and comes to school may spread the illness to other students and staff. It is recommended that a child remain home if any of the following conditions are present:

1. Fever: Temperature of 100 degrees or higher. The child can return to school after he/she is fever-free for 24 hours, without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen).

2. Vomiting/diarrhea: A child with vomiting and/or diarrhea should stay home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours.

3. Conjunctivitis (Pink eye): Following a diagnosis of conjunctivitis, the child may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of prescribed medication.

4. Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages. A child with a suspicious rash should return to school only after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and has authorized the child’s return to school.

5. Colds: Consider keeping your child at home if he/she is experiencing excessive nose blowing and/or coughing.

6. Antibiotics: If your child has a contagious illness that requires antibiotics, he/she must be on the medication for 24 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school.

For 4th and 5th Grade Families

In the next month, your fourth and fifth grader will take the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test (GMRT)

along with all Grade 4-8 students. The GMRT is a research-based, nationally normed reading

assessment.

The Gates-MacGinitie will be administered in one 60 minute session. This multiple choice test

provides vocabulary and comprehension scores and a Lexile reading level. Lexile level information

will support classroom instruction and reading intervention as well as student and teacher

selection of reading materials. Results of this assessment will be shared with you at

parent/guardian-teacher conferences in March.

For further information on the Lexile Framework, please see www.lexile.com.

Chris Weaver, Curriculum Specialist

We had our first Student Council meeting on Monday, November 9. Everybody had a great time,

and we made lots of progress. We have a wonderful bunch of kids! The officers are:

President; Sophia Cote

Vice President; Marley Brown Recording Secretary; Jackie Hamad

Corresponding Secretary; Baylee Krulewitz Treasurer; Carson Raisner.

1st grade representatives: Molly Silverman,

Christopher Faga, Sadie Weiner, Liam Kletter, Ali Levy, and August Alexander

2nd grade representatives: Hikari Mizuno, Ian

Polatnick, Eva Greenspan, Connor McHugh, Ian Wolfe, and Jake Monaco.

3rd grade representatives: Rebecca Samuels,

Carter Ivens, Zachary Gerken, Lexi Dominguez, Tyler Albanese, Tyler Redden, Isabella Mangini,

and Thijs Doot.

4th grade representatives: Joelson Krulewitz, Ella Wolfe, Gabriella Deslauriers, Talia Sortman,

Charlie Sink, and Julia Zydanowicz.

5th grade representatives: Corinne Daly, Kellyann Taylor, Dylan Albanese, Kendra Kane, Anya Lu,

and Lucy Homer.

In our meeting, we started off by brainstorming ideas for spirit days. We had tons and tons of

suggestions! For example, we came up with ideas like time travel day, Hawaiian day, tie-dye day, and mini Olympics--just to name a few. The ideas are awesome! Next, we talked about a video that we

are making for the upcoming safety assembly. The Student Council came up with several ideas to

include in it. The majority of the people wanted us to show the right thing to do, and the wrong thing to

do. We also agreed that the video should show different locations. So, we combined those 2 ideas.

The locations we decided on were: recess, fire drills, on the computer, and on the bus. Finally, we learned how to make a motion and we adjourned our meeting. We can’t wait for the next meeting!

-Baylee Krulewitz, Corresponding Secretary
