while Al attended a few programs related to governance, affordability and accessibility, andfinancial reporting.

For our part, Al, Damian Kavanagh from SAIS, and I presented aGoldmine session on Collaboration Grants. A big thank you to our colleagues at commonfund, especiallySteve Snyder and Nelson Pereira, who co-hosted our PAISBOAevent in Washington DC at the Mansion on O Street. The venuewas fun and funky, the food was eclectic, and a good time washad by all! Congratulations to our own Frank Aloise, who was honored byNBOA with the Ken White Distinguished Business Officer Award, given to exceptionally activeand inspiring individuals who have dedicated their careers to the support of others in the field. Itwas a privilege to be on hand for this special and well deserved recognition of Frank's manyaccomplishments on behalf of independent school business officers. At NAIS, the focus was quite different, but equally valuable to business officers. There were sixtracks for workshops: communications and advancement, governance, leadership development, management, the classroom experience and the student experience. Al was particularly movedby a presentation about a turnaround experience for a school in Chicago, and I attended a veryinteresting program about thrivability, and learned about PechaKucha sessions where eachspeaker created 20 slides which advance every 20 seconds and made a significant point in sixminutes and 40 seconds. Here is an overview of the NAIS speakers. As promised, we will be bringing back some of the presentation materials to share with all of youthrough Friday Flyer articles, face-to-face presentations, and hands-on workshops for yourprofessional development. We know that the financial future of our member schools, in no smallpart, depends on our ability to keep you informed about the latest trends in independent schooleducation and beyond. We are committed to that purpose! Join us on May 11 to learn more about implementing a banding system for faculty compensationwith Carolyn Hapeman and Margaret Haviland from Westtown. They will share the 3-hourworkshop they created for NAIS on aligning faculty compensation and evaluation with a school'smission. Be sure to invite your Head of School, HR Director, and anyone else at your school whois involved in faculty compensation and evaluations. We look forward to seeing you at our Annual Meeting at Lincoln Financial Field on April 20! Take advantage of the power of the flock!

Mark's presentation wasespecially interesting because it summarizedthe results of their 2016 survey, one whichthey conduct every 5 years. Since the financial crisis of 2008, the issue offinancial and merit aid has become increasingimportant to most Independent School, wholook at it through their own lens of their culture, position in the market, and financial strength. While PAISBOA's Data Survey provides valuable information, the responses of 372 schoolsparticipating in the NAIS survey provides broader insight into the "industry".

Two charts we felt were particularly interesting arepresented here, and the entire presentation isavailable for download.

As one would suspect, Mark's presentation alsoaddressed trends and practices in schools as theygrapple with this most important subject.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, retirement plans andIRAs account for about 60 percent of the assets of U.S. householdsinvesting at least $100,000. Both state and federal laws govern thedisposition of these assets, and the results can be complicated, especially when the owner of the account has been divorced andremarried. Therefore, it is important for plan fiduciaries of qualifiedretirement plans to understand their role regarding beneficiarydesignations and the regulations that dictate. Under ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code, in the case of a definedcontribution plan that is not subject to the qualified joint and survivor annuity rules, if a participantis married at the time of death, the participant's spouse is automatically the beneficiary of theparticipant's entire account balance under the plan. A participant may designate someone otherthan his or her spouse as the beneficiary only with the spouse's notarized consent. If the owner of a retirement plan account is single when he or she dies, the assets go to theparticipant's designated beneficiary, no matter what his or her will states. In addition, the assetswill be distributed to the designated beneficiary regardless of any other agreements including evencourt orders. If the participant fails to designate a beneficiary, the terms of the plan documentgovern the disposition of the participant's account. Read More...

The article What Your Policy Says About "Ubering" to School is worth sharing because theuse of Uber and other such services is a tempting, relatively easy and low cost option forschools. As the article suggests, it should be approached with extreme caution andprobably deserves attention in your policies.
