Lake Geneva Monday MadnessThe MBC Monday Madness was held in the Williams Bay/Fontana area . Twenty-nine

members first toured Yerke's Observatory, which is a facility of the Department of Astronomyand Astrophysics of the University of Chicago. It was supposed to be a one-hour tour, butthe tour director kindly extended our tour to a two-hour tour. Members received quite aneducation on the upcoming August eclipse, learned the architecture of the building, andobserved the gigantic telescope. Some members have expressed an interest in returningto Yerke's Observatory at night to actually look through the gigantic telescope!

At 3:30, members went to Gordy's Boat House and had cocktails and appetizers. Theparty then continued with everyone going to the Waterfront Restaurant at the Abby Resortand enjoying dinner on their outside lakefront patio.

Dry Dock and Welfare Please keep Pete Merryfield inyour thoughts and prayers for aspeedy recovery.

SEAFARING WORDS INEVERYDAY SPEECH

Rub Salt in the Wounds . . . another insultIn the days of sail, salt was critical to preserve

meat stores needed for a voyage that could last manymonths. It also was used as an antiseptic. Anunfortunate sailor who had just received a lashingwith the infamous cat-o'nine tails would then havesalt rubbed into his wounds. Metaphorically, one rubssalt into a figurative wound by adding insult to injury.

Rummage Sale . . . sale of cast-off goodsIn the days of wooden merchant ships, dockside

warehouses held special sales of damaged cargo.Called rummage sales, they took their name from OldFrench word arrumage, meaning to pack or stowcargo aboard ship. Rummage gradually took on themeaning of unwanted, damaged, or low qualitycastoffs, such as items of clothing or householdgoods. The act of "rummaging" also came to meanransacking or searching through a jumble of objects.

Fairway . . . open pathAccording to William Falconer in his 1789

Universal Dictionary of the Marine, a fairway is "thepath or channel of a narrow river, bay, or haven inwhich ships usually advance in their passage up ordown." Today the game of golf shares the wordfairway with the nautical definition -- on a golf course, a fairway is the clear or open path, that is, the partof the course without tees, putting greens, and hazardsthat provide a fair lie for the ball.
